Hud Ayah 17

11:16) Those are they for whom there is nothing in the hereafter but the fire; and what they wrought in it shall go for nothing, and vain is what they do. [M. H. Shakir]

He said: Whoever does good deeds with the intention that Allah will give him his reward in this world, Allah will give him his reward in this world, and he will have in the Hereafter the Fire.

(هود 11:15-16) Whoever desires this world's life and its adornment, We will pay them in full their deeds therein, and they shall not be made to suffer loss therein. Those are they for whom there is nothing in the hereafter but the fire; and what they wrought in it shall go for nothing, and vain is what they do. [M. H. Shakir]

He said: “A man asked my father after his return from the standing-place (of ‘Arafah), and said: Do you think Allah will respond to all these people? My father said: No one stood in this standing-place except that Allah forgave him, whether he was a believer or an unbeliever. But they are, in their forgiveness, on three levels—and he mentioned the three levels, and said concerning the third: and an unbeliever who stood in this standing-place for the adornment of the worldly life—Allah forgave him his past sins; if he repents of shirk for the remainder of his life, [he is saved]; but if he does not repent, He will pay him his full wage and will not deprive him of the reward of this standing-place. And that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic... [the verses above].”

And the hadith in full has already preceded under His saying, “So when you have performed your devotions, then laud Allah as you lauded your fathers...” [al-Baqarah 2:200].

11:15) Whoever desires this world's life and its adornment, We will pay them in full their deeds therein, and they shall not be made to suffer loss therein. [M. H. Shakir]

Al-‘Ayyāshī, from ‘Ammār b. Suwayd, said: I heard Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) say: “Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornment—meaning so-and-so and so-and-so—We will pay them in full their deeds therein.”

(هود 11:17) Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from Him follows it, and before it (is) the Book of Musa, a guide and a mercy? These believe in it; and whoever of the (different) parties disbelieves in it, the Fire is his promised place; so be not in doubt concerning it; surely it is the truth from your Lord, but most men do not believe. [M. H. Shakir]

11:17) [see above for Shakir translation]

‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said: My father narrated to me, from Yaḥyā b. Abī ‘Imrān, from Yūnus, from Abū Baṣīr and al-Fuḍayl, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: “It was revealed as: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord—meaning the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family)—and a witness from him follows it, a guide and a mercy; and before it (was) the Book of Musa; these believe in it.’ They have advanced and delayed in the composition.”

He said: “The Commander of the Faithful (salutations of Allah be upon him) is the witness from the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family), and the Messenger of Allah is upon a clear proof from his Lord.”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

Al-Ṣaffār, with his chain to al-Aṣbagh b. Nubāta, who said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “If the cushion were laid out for me and I sat upon it, I would judge among the people of the Torah by their Torah, the people of the Gospel by their Gospel, the people of the Psalms by their Psalms, and the people of the Furqān by their Furqān, with a judgment that ascends to Allah, radiant. By Allah, no verse was revealed in the Book of Allah, by night or by day, except that I knew in whom it was revealed; and there is no one of Quraysh upon whose head the razors have passed except that there has been revealed about him a verse from the Book of Allah, driving him to Paradise or to the Fire.” A man stood up to him and said: “O Commander of the Faithful, which verse was revealed about you?” He said: “Have you not heard Allah say: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from him follows it’? The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) is upon a clear proof from his Lord, and I am the witness for him, and I follow him and am from him.”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

Shaykh (in his Amālī), by his isnād from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): He was delivering the Friday sermon on the minbar and said: “By Him who split the seed and created the soul, there is no man from Quraysh upon whom the razors have passed except that a verse of the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has been revealed about him—I know it just as I know him.” A man stood and said: “O Commander of the Faithful, what is your verse that was revealed about you?” He said: “If you ask, then understand—and you need not ask anyone about it other than me. Have you recited Sūrat Hūd?” He said: “Yes, O Commander of the Faithful.” He said: “Have you heard Allah, Mighty and Majestic, say: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from him follows it’?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “The one upon clear proof from his Lord is Muḥammad (blessings and peace be upon him and his family), and the witness who follows him and is from him—I am ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib. By Allah, I am the witness for His Prophet, and I am from him (blessings and peace be upon him and his family).”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

And from him, in his Majālis, with his isnād... from al-Ḥasan (peace be upon them all) in a long sermon delivered in the presence of Mu‘āwiyah, in which he said: “I say, O assembly of creatures—listen, and you have hearts and ears, so comprehend: We are a Household whom Allah has honored with Islam, chosen, selected, and elected; He has removed from us impurity and purified us thoroughly—and impurity is doubt—so we never doubt Allah the Truth and His religion, ever. He purified us from every defect and blemish, making us pure unto Adam as a favor from Him. Never did people split into two parties except that Allah placed us in the better of them, until matters and times led to Allah sending Muḥammad (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) with prophethood, choosing him for the message, and revealing His Book upon him; then He commanded him to call to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. My father (peace be upon him) was the first to respond to Allah and His Messenger, the first to believe and to affirm Allah and His Messenger. And Allah, Exalted, has said in His Book revealed upon His sent Prophet: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from him follows it’—the Messenger of Allah is the one upon clear proof from his Lord, and my father is the one who follows him, and he is a witness from him.” He continued the sermon at length.

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

He said: “The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) is the one who was upon a clear proof from his Lord, and I am the witness for him and from him. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, there is no one of Quraysh upon whom the razors have passed except that Allah has sent down concerning him a portion of His Book. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, that you should know what Allah has decreed for us, the People of the House, upon the tongue of the unlettered Prophet is more beloved to me than that I should have the fill of this open plain in gold. By Allah, our likeness in this community is only as the Ark of Nūḥ, and as the Gate of Ḥiṭṭah among the Children of Israel.”

13:7) You are only a warner and (there is) a guide for every people. [M. H. Shakir]

Sulaym b. Qays al-Hilālī... reports from Qays b. Sa‘d b. ‘Ubādah regarding his conversation with Mu‘āwiyah... Qays said: “...I took it from one who is better than my father... ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib... about whom Allah revealed: ‘Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you and whoever has knowledge of the Book’...” Mu‘āwiyah said: “Its Siddīq is Abū Bakr, its Fārūq is ‘Umar, and the one who has knowledge of the Book is ‘Abd Allāh b. Salām.” Qays said: “Most entitled to these things is the one about whom Allah revealed: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof... and a witness from him follows it,’ and (about whom He revealed): ‘You are only a warner and for every people there is a guide’; and the one whom the Messenger of Allah appointed at Ghadīr Khumm... and in Tabūk said: ‘You are to me as Hārūn was to Mūsā, except that there is no prophet after me.’”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

Al-‘Ayyāshī, from Burayd b. Mu‘āwiyah al-‘Ijlī, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), said: “The one upon a clear proof from his Lord is the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family), and the one who followed him after him—the witness from him—is the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), then his legatees one after another.”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

From Jābir b. ‘Abd Allāh b. Yaḥyā: I heard ‘Alī (peace be upon him) saying: “There is no man from Quraysh except that one or two verses from the Book of Allah have been revealed about him.” A man from the people said to him: “So what was revealed about you, O Commander of the Faithful?” He said: “Do you not read the verse in Hūd: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from him follows it’? Muḥammad (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) is upon a clear proof from his Lord, and I am the witness.”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

(Kashf al-Ghummah): ‘Abbād b. ‘Abd Allāh al-Asadī said: I heard ‘Alī saying while on the minbar: “There is no man from Quraysh except that one or two verses were revealed about him.” A man beneath him said: “So what was revealed about you?” He became angry, then said: “Had you not asked me before the masses, I would not have told you. Woe to you—do you recite Sūrat Hūd?” Then ‘Alī (peace be upon him) recited: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from him follows it’—the Messenger of Allah is upon a clear proof, and I am the witness from him.”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

And from him: Ibn ‘Abbās said regarding the meaning of the verse: It is ‘Alī (peace be upon him); he bore witness for the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him and his family), and he is from him.

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

Ibn Shahr Āshūb: from al-Ṭabarī with his isnād, from Jābir b. ‘Abd Allāh, from ‘Alī (peace be upon him); and al-Aṣbagh, Zayn al-‘Ābidīn, al-Bāqir, al-Ṣādiq, and al-Riḍā (peace be upon them) narrated that the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord’—the Messenger of Allah; ‘and a witness follows him’—I am [that witness].”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

From Ḥāfiẓ Abū Nu‘aym through three routes: I heard ‘Alī say: “Allah’s saying: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from him follows it’—the Messenger of Allah is upon a clear proof from his Lord, and I am the witness.”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

Ḥammād b. Salamah, from Thābit, from Anas: “‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord’—he said: It is the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family). ‘And a witness from him follows it’—he said: It is ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him); he was—by Allah—the tongue of the Messenger of Allah.”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

From the book of Faṣīḥ al-Khaṭīb: that Ibn al-Kawwā’ asked him: “What was revealed about you?” He said: “His saying, Exalted is He: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from him follows it.’” Zādhān narrated something similar.

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

Al-Tha‘labī: from al-Kalbī, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ‘Abbās: “‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord’—the Messenger of Allah; ‘and a witness from him follows it’—the witness is ‘Alī (peace be upon him).” It was also narrated by al-Qāḍī Abū ‘Amr ‘Uthmān b. Aḥmad, and Abū Naṣr al-Qushayrī, in their books; and by al-Falakī the exegete, from Mujāhid and from ‘Abd Allāh b. Shaddād.

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

And from the path of the opponents: Ibn al-Maghāzilī al-Shāfi‘ī, in the exegesis of His saying... said that ‘Alī (peace be upon him) said: “The Messenger of Allah is upon a clear proof from his Lord, and I am the witness from him—I follow him and obey him.”

5:55) Only Allah is your Guardian and His Messenger and those who believe, those who keep up prayers and pay the poor-rate while they bow. [M. H. Shakir]

Ibn al-Maghāzilī al-Shāfi‘ī narrated with his isnād from ‘Alī b. ‘Ābis... that Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said when the son of ‘Abd Allāh b. Salām passed by: I said, “May I be your ransom, this is the son of the one who has knowledge of the Book?” He said: “No; rather, it is your companion ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him), about whom verses were revealed: ‘and whoever has knowledge of the Book’ [13:43], ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof’ [11:17], and ‘Only Allah is your Guardian and His Messenger...’ [5:55].”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

Muwaffaq b. Aḥmad said: Concerning His saying, Exalted: “‘Is he then who has with him clear proof... and a witness from him follows it’—Ibn ‘Abbās said: It is ‘Alī (peace be upon him), the first to bear witness for the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him and his family), and he is from him.”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

Al-Tha‘labī in his Tafsīr, raising it to Ibn ‘Abbās: “‘Is he then who has with him clear proof... and a witness from him follows it’—‘Alī specifically.”

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

With his isnād from al-Sha‘bī, raising it to ‘Alī (peace be upon him)... ‘Alī said: “There is no man from Quraysh except that a verse or two have been revealed about him.” A man said to him: “What was revealed about you?” He said: “Do you not read the verse in Hūd: ‘and a witness from him follows it’?”

Abū Bakr b. Mardawayh... narrated from Abū Dharr, al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad, and Salmān al-Fārisī: “We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family), and none other than us were present, when three men from the Muhājirūn of Badr approached. The Messenger of Allah said: ‘My community will divide after me into three groups: a group who are people of truth untainted by falsehood—their example is like gold: whenever you assay it by fire, it increases in quality and fragrance; and their Imām is this one—one of the three—and he is the one whom Allah commanded in His Book as an Imām and a mercy. And a group who are people of falsehood, not mixing it with truth—their example is like the dross of iron: whenever you test it by fire it increases in impurity; and their Imām is this one—one of the three. And a group who are people of misguidance, wavering between that—neither to these nor to those; and their Imām is this one—one of the three.’” He said: “I asked them about the people of truth and their Imām. They said: This is ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him), the Imām of the Godwary. They refrained from naming the other two; I urged them to name them but they did not.”

He adds: This hadith was narrated by the most eloquent preacher of Khwārazm, Muwaffaq b. Aḥmad, and also by Abū al-Faraj al-Mu‘āfā, who was a shaykh of al-Bukhārī.

11:17) [see Shakir translation above]

Ibn al-Maghāzilī al-Shāfi‘ī... from ‘Abbād b. ‘Abd Allāh: I heard ‘Alī (peace be upon him) say: “No verse from the Book of Allah, Glorious and Mighty, was revealed except that I know when it was revealed and about whom it was revealed; and there is no man from Quraysh except that a verse from the Book of Allah, Glorious and Mighty, was revealed about him, driving him to Paradise or to the Fire.” A man stood to him and said: “O Commander of the Faithful, what was revealed about you?” He said: “Had you not asked me before the heads of witnesses, I would not have told you. Do you not read: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from him follows it’? The Messenger of Allah is upon a clear proof from his Lord, and I am the witness from him.” And in the (Kitāb al-Ḥibrī), the like of it; and in (Rumūz al-Kunūz) by al-Ras‘anī, the like of it.

4:80) Whoever obeys the Messenger, he indeed obeys Allah, and whoever turns back, so We have not sent you as a keeper over them. [M. H. Shakir]

3:31) Say: If you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your faults. [M. H. Shakir]

11:17) And whoever of the (different) parties disbelieves in it, the Fire is his promised place. [From the verse; M. H. Shakir]

Muḥammad b. Ya‘qūb, with his isnād from Jābir b. Yazīd, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), in a sermon: “He said in the decisive part of His Book: ‘Whoever obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah, and whoever turns back—We have not sent you as a keeper over them.’ So He coupled his obedience with His own obedience, and his disobedience with His own disobedience; that was proof of what was entrusted to him, and a witness for him against whoever followed him and disobeyed him. He clarified that in other places of the Mighty Book, saying, in urging to follow him, encouraging to believe him and accept his call: ‘Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.’ So following him (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) is the love of Allah, His good pleasure; it is forgiveness of sins, complete success, and the obligation of Paradise. Turning away from him and rejecting him is opposing Allah, His anger and wrath; and remoteness from Him is dwelling in the Fire. And that is His saying, Exalted: ‘And whoever of the parties disbelieves in it, the Fire is his promised place’—meaning rejection of him and disobedience to him.”

And a hadith has already preceded on the meaning of the verse, from al-‘Ayyāshī, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, Exalted: “Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you...” —the verse. Let it be sought there.
