Qur’an 2:155–157 –

And We will most certainly try you with something of fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits; and give good news to the patient,

Who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: Surely we are Allah’s and to Him we shall surely return.

Those are they on whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and those are the followers of the right course. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/711 _1- Muhammad b. Ibrahim al-Nu‘mānī—known as Ibn Zaynab—said: Muhammad b. Hammām narrated to us, who said: ‘Abd Allāh b. Ja‘far al-Himyari narrated to us, who said: Ahmad b. Hilāl narrated to us, who said: al-Hasan b. Mahbūb narrated to us, from ‘Alī b. Ri’āb, from Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon them), who said: “Ahead of the Rising of the Qā’im are signs—an affliction from Allah, Exalted, for His believing servants.” I said: And what are they? He said: “That is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: And We will most certainly try you with something of fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits, and give good news to the patient (Qur’an 2:155). He said: We will surely test you—meaning the believers—with something of fear from the kings of the sons of So-and-so at the end of their rule; and hunger, through the high cost of their prices; and a loss of wealth—corruption of commerce and little surplus therein; and lives—rampant death; and fruits—meager yield of what is planted and little blessing in fruits. And give good news to the patient then of the emergence of the Qā’im (peace be upon him).” Then he said: “O Muhammad, this is its interpretation. Verily Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: And none knows its interpretation except Allah and those firmly rooted in knowledge (Qur’an 3:7).”

99-/712 _2- And from him: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Sa‘īd b. ‘Uqda informed us, who said: Ahmad b. Yūsuf b. Ya‘qūb, Abū al-Hasan al-Ju‘fī, informed me from his book, who said: Ismā‘īl b. Mihrān narrated to us, from al-Hasan b. ‘Alī b. Abī Hamza, from his father, from Abū Basīr, who said: Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “There must be, before the Rising of the Qā’im, a year in which people will suffer hunger and severe fear from killing, and a loss in wealth, lives, and fruits. Indeed, that is clearly in the Book of Allah.” Then he recited this verse: And We will most certainly try you with something of fear... (Qur’an 2:155).

Whoever lends Me a loan from it, I give him for each one tenfold up to seven hundredfold, and more if I will. And whoever does not lend Me a loan from it and I take something from him by compulsion, and he is patient, I give him three qualities; were I to give one of them to My angels, they would be content with it from Me.” He said: Then Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “The saying of Allah, Most High: Who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: Surely we are Allah’s and to Him we shall surely return. 99-/716 _6- And from him: from ‘Alī b. Muhammad, from Sālih b. Abī Hammād, raised (mursal): The Commander of the Believers (peace be upon him) came to al-Ash‘ath b. Qays to console him for a brother of his called ‘Abd al-Rahmān. The Commander of the Believers said to him: “If you show anguish, then you have fulfilled the right of kin; and if you are patient, then you have fulfilled the right of Allah. In any case, if you are patient, the decree will pass over you while you are praised; and if you are impatient, the decree will pass over you while you are blamed.” Al-Ash‘ath said to him: Surely we are Allah’s and to Him we return! The Commander of the Believers (peace be upon him) said: “Do you know its interpretation?” Al-Ash‘ath said: You are the utmost and end of knowledge. He said to him: “As for your saying, Surely we are Allah’s—it is your acknowledgment of [His] dominion; and as for your saying, and to Him we return—it is your acknowledgment of perishing [before Him].”

99-/717 _7- Al-Sayyid al-Radī in (al-Khasā’is): ‘Alī (peace be upon him), having heard a man say, “Surely we are Allah’s and to Him we return,” said: “O man, our saying ‘Surely we are Allah’s’ is our acknowledgment of [His] dominion, and our saying ‘to Him we return’ is our acknowledgment of perishing [before Him].”

99-/718 _8- Ibn Shahrāshūb said: When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) announced the news of ‘Alī (peace be upon him) in the manner of Ja‘far in the land of Mu’ta, he said: “Surely we are Allah’s and to Him we return,” whereupon Allah revealed: Who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: Surely we are Allah’s and to Him we shall surely return. Those are they on whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy... (Qur’an 2:156–157).

99-/719 _9- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from al-Thumālī, who said: I asked Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: And We will most certainly try you with something of fear and hunger (Qur’an 2:155). He said: “That is a specific hunger and a general hunger. As for al-Shām, it is general; and as for the specific one in al-Kūfa, it is particular and not general—rather, it specifically targets in al-Kūfa the enemies of the House of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), and Allah will destroy them by hunger. As for fear, it is general in al-Shām, and that fear will be when the Qā’im (peace be upon him) rises; and as for hunger, it will be before the Rising of the Qā’im. And that is His saying: And We will most certainly try you with something of fear and hunger.” (Qur’an 2:155)

99-/720 _10- From Ishāq b. ‘Ammār, who said: When Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) passed away, we began consoling Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him). One of those with us in the gathering said: “May Allah have mercy on a servant and send blessings upon him; when he narrated to us, he would say: ‘The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said...’” He said: Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) then fell silent for a long time and tapped the ground, then turned to us and said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: I have granted the world among My servants as a loan. Whoever lends Me a loan from it, I will give him for each one tenfold up to seven hundredfold, and more if I will. And whoever does not lend Me a loan from it, and I take it from him by compulsion and he is patient, I grant him three qualities; were I to give one of them to My angels, they would be content with it.” Then he recited: Who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: Surely we are Allah’s and to Him we shall surely return... to His saying: and those are the followers of the right course (Qur’an 2:156–157).

99-/721 _11- From Ismā‘īl b. Ziyād al-Sakūnī, from Ja‘far b. Muhammad, from his father, from his forefathers (peace be upon them), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Four qualities—whoever has them, Allah writes him among the people of Paradise: One whose safeguard is the testimony that there is no god but Allah; one who, when Allah bestows a blessing upon him, says: al-hamdu lillāh; one who, when he commits a sin, says: astaghfirullāh; and one who, when a calamity befalls him, says: innā lillāh wa innā ilayhi rāji‘ūn.”

99-/722 _12- From Abū ‘Alī al-Muhallabī, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Four qualities—whoever has them is in the greatest light of Allah: one whose safeguard in his affair is the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family); one who, when a calamity befalls him, says: innā lillāh wa innā ilayhi rāji‘ūn; one who, when good befalls him, says: al-hamdu lillāh; and one who, when he commits a fault, says: astaghfirullāh wa atūbu ilayh.”

99-/723 _13- From ‘Abd Allāh b. Sālih al-Khath‘amī, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Allah said: My believing servant—if I endow him, give to him, provide for him, and ask him for a loan, then if he lends Me willingly I will give him in place of one a hundred thousand and more; and if he does not, I take from him by compulsion through calamities in his wealth. If he is patient, I grant him three qualities; if My angels were given to choose one of them, they would choose it.” Then he recited this verse: Who, when a misfortune befalls them... to His saying: the followers of the right course (Qur’an 2:156–157).

99-/Qur’an 2:158 - Surely the Safa and the Marwa are among the signs appointed by Allah; so whoever makes a pilgrimage to the House or pays a visit (to it), there is no blame on him if he goes round them both; and whoever does good spontaneously, then surely Allah is Grateful, Knowing. Sinān, from Ismā‘īl b. Jābir and ‘Abd al-Karīm b. ‘Amr, from ‘Abd al-Hamīd b. Abī al-Daylam, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: “Safa was named ‘Safa’ because the Chosen One, Adam (peace be upon him), descended upon it; thus the mountain received a name cut from the name of Adam (peace be upon him). Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: Surely Allah chose Adam and Nūh and the descendants of Ibrāhīm and the descendants of ‘Imrān above the nations (Qur’an 3:33). And Hawwā’ descended upon Marwa, and it was named ‘Marwa’ because the woman (al-mar’ah) descended upon it; thus the mountain received a name cut from the name of ‘woman.’”

99-/727 _2- And from him: My father (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me, who said: Sa‘d b. ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us, from Ya‘qūb b. Yazīd, from Muhammad b. Abī ‘Umayr, from Mu‘āwiya b. ‘Ammār, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: “When Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) left Ismā‘īl (peace be upon him) in Mecca, the child became thirsty, and there were trees between Safa and Marwa. His mother went out until she stood upon Safa and said: ‘Is there any companion in the valley?’ No one answered her. She went on until she reached Marwa and said: ‘Is there any companion in the valley?’ No one answered her. Then she returned to Safa and said likewise, until she had done that seven times, and Allah made that a practice (sunna). Gabriel then came to her and said to her: ‘Who are you?’ She said: ‘I am the mother of the child of Ibrāhīm.’ He said to her: ‘To whom has he entrusted you?’ She said: ‘Since you ask that—I had said to him when he intended to leave: O Ibrāhīm, to whom do you entrust us?’ He said: ‘To Allah, Mighty and Majestic.’ Gabriel said: ‘He has entrusted you to One sufficient.’” He said: “People used to avoid passing through Mecca because of the lack of water. The child scraped with his heel, and Zamzam gushed forth. She returned from Marwa to the child, and the water had sprung up, and she began gathering the sand around it, fearing the water might flow away. Had she left it, it would have become a flowing stream.” He said: “When the birds saw it, they circled over it. A caravan from Yemen passed by; when they saw the birds circling over it, they said: ‘Birds do not circle…’” [continues].
