S 30 Ayat 28

قوله تعالى:

ضَرَبَ لَكُمْ مَثَلاً مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ هَلْ لَكُمْ مِنْ مٰا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمٰانُكُمْ مِنْ شُرَكٰاءَ فِي مٰا رَزَقْنٰاكُمْ فَأَنْتُمْ فِيهِ سَوٰاءٌ [28]

The Words of Allah, the Exalted:

"He sets forth to you a parable from your own selves: Have you among those whom your right hands possess any partners in what We have given you for sustenance, so that with respect to it you are equal?" [Surat Ar-Rum 30:28, Translation: M. H. Shakir]

/8325 _1-علي بن إبراهيم،قال:إنّه كان سبب نزولها أن قريشا و العرب كانوا إذا حجوا يلبون،و كانت تلبيتهم:لبيك اللّهمّ لبيك،لبيك لا شريك لك لبيك،إن الحمد و النعمة لك و الملك لا شريك لك،و هي تلبية إبراهيم(عليه السلام)و الأنبياء،فجاءهم إبليس في صورة شيخ،فقال:ليست هذه تلبية أسلافكم.قالوا:و ما كانت تلبيتهم؟قال:كانوا يقولون:لبيك اللّهمّ لبيك،لبيك لا شريك لك إلاّ شريك هو لك،فنفرت قريش من هذا القول، فقال لهم إبليس:على رسلكم حتّى آتي على آخر كلامي.فقالوا:ما هو؟فقال:إلاّ شريك هو لك،تملكه و ما يملك، ألا ترون أنّه يملك الشريك و ما ملكه؟فرضوا بذلك،و كانوا يلبون بهذا قريش خاصّة.

/8325 _1- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: The reason for the revelation of this verse was that Quraysh and the Arabs, when they performed Hajj, used to recite the talbiyah (pilgrimage chant), and their talbiyah was: "Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la sharika laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak" — which is the talbiyah of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and the Prophets.

Then Iblis came to them in the form of an old man and said: "This is not the talbiyah of your ancestors." They asked: "What was their talbiyah?" He said: "They used to say: Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la sharika laka illa sharikan huwa lak (Here I am, O Allah, here I am, here I am, no partner do You have except a partner who belongs to You)."

Quraysh were disturbed by this statement. Iblis said to them: "Wait until I finish my words." They asked: "What is it?" He said: "Except a partner who belongs to You; You own him and whatever he possesses. Do you not see that He owns the partner and what the partner possesses?" So they were content with this and Quraysh specifically used to recite the talbiyah in this way.

فلما بعث اللّه رسوله أنكر ذلك عليهم،و قال:«هذا شرك»فأنزل اللّه: ضَرَبَ لَكُمْ مَثَلاً مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ هَلْ لَكُمْ مِنْ مٰا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمٰانُكُمْ مِنْ شُرَكٰاءَ فِي مٰا رَزَقْنٰاكُمْ فَأَنْتُمْ فِيهِ سَوٰاءٌ ،أي ترضون أنتم فيما تملكون أن يكون لكم فيه شريك؟فإذا لم ترضوا أنتم أن يكون لكم فيما تملكون شريك،فكيف ترضون أن تجعلوا لي شريكا فيما أملك؟

When Allah sent His Messenger, he (the Prophet) denounced this from them and said: "This is shirk (associating partners with Allah)." So Allah revealed:

Meaning: Do you consent to having a partner in what you own? So if you yourselves do not consent to having a partner in what you possess, then how do you consent to assigning for Me a partner in what I own?
