[Qur’an 2:132] And the same did Abraham enjoin on his sons and (so did) Jacob: O my sons! surely Allah has chosen for you this faith, therefore die not unless you are Muslims. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/647 _2- Ibn Shahrāshūb and others, from the author of Sharh al-Akhbār: Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, “And Abraham enjoined it on his sons, and (so did) Jacob: O my sons! surely Allah has chosen for you the religion, therefore do not die unless you are Muslims,” said: “It means the guardianship (wilāya) of ‘Alī (peace be upon him).” [1]

[Qur’an 2:133] Nay! were you witnesses when death visited Ya’qub, when he said to his sons: What will you serve after me? They said: We shall serve your God and the God of your fathers, Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq, one God only, and to Him do we submit. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/648 _3- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Jābir, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), he said: I asked him about the interpretation of this verse from Allah’s saying, “When he said to his sons: What will you serve after me? They said: We shall serve your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ismā‘īl and Isḥāq, one God,” he said: “It applies to the Qā’im (peace be upon him).”

[Qur’an 2:135] And they say: Be Jews or Christians, you will be guided aright. Say: Nay! (we follow) the religion of Ibrahim, the hanif, and he was not one of the polytheists. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/649 _4- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from al-Walīd, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), he said: “Al-ḥanīfiyya is Islam.”

99-/650 _5- From Zurārah, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him): “Al-ḥanīfiyya left nothing out—indeed among it are trimming the moustache, cutting the nails, and circumcision.”

99-/651 _6- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm: Allah, the Exalted, revealed to Abraham (peace be upon him) al-ḥanīfiyya, and it is purity, and it is ten things:

Five are on the head and five on the body. As for those on the head: taking the moustache, letting the beards grow, cutting the hair [1], using the tooth-stick (siwāk), and tooth-cleansing (khilāl). And as for those on the body: shaving the hair of the body, circumcision, cutting the nails, the ritual bath after major impurity, and purification with water. This is the pure ḥanīfiyya which Abraham brought; it has not been abrogated, nor will it be abrogated until the Day of Resurrection.

[Qur’an 2:136–137] Say: We believe in Allah and (in) that which has been revealed to us, and (in) that which was revealed to Ibrahim and Ismail and Ishaq and Ya’qub and the tribes, and (in) that which was given to Musa and Isa, and (in) that which was given to the prophets from their Lord; we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit.

If then they believe as you believe in, they are indeed on the right course; and if they turn back, then surely they are only in great opposition, so Allah will suffice you against them, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/652 _1- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Ṣāliḥ, from one of his companions, regarding His saying, “Say: We believe in Allah and what has been sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham and Ismā‘īl and Isḥāq and Ya‘qūb and the tribes”: As for His saying “Say,” it refers to [they are] the Family of Muḥammad (Allah bless him and his family), and His saying “If then they believe as you believe in, they are indeed guided” refers to the rest of the people.

99-/653 _2- From Ḥanān ibn Sadīr, from his father, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: I said to him, “Were the sons of Jacob prophets?” He said: “No, but they were tribes (asbāṭ), sons of prophets; and they did not leave this world except as happy ones—they repented and remembered what they had done.”

And this hadith was narrated by Muḥammad ibn Ya‘qūb with his chain from Ḥanān, from his father, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), with an addition after his words “and they remembered what they had done,” and it is his (peace be upon him) statement: “Except [2] the two shaykhs; they left the world and did not repent and did not remember what they did to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). So upon them is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.” [3]

99-/654 _3- Muḥammad ibn Ya‘qūb: from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad, from al-Ḥasan ibn Maḥbūb, from Muḥammad ibn al-Nu‘mān, from Salām, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, “We believe in Allah and what has been sent down to us,” he said: “It only meant—”
