English: She treated the matter lightly. He said, “What did he say to you?” She replied, “He told me: Convey my greetings to your husband and say to him: Let him change the threshold of his door.” So he divorced her and married another woman. Abraham (peace be upon him) remained away as long as Allah willed, then sought permission from Sarah to visit Ishmael (peace be upon him). She granted him permission on the condition that he would not dismount. Abraham (peace be upon him) came until he reached Ishmael’s door and said to his wife, “Where is your master?” She said, “He is out hunting, and he will come to me now, God willing. So dismount—may Allah have mercy on you.” He said to her, “Do you have any hospitality to offer?” She replied, “Yes,” and she brought milk and meat. He prayed for blessing for her [1]. Had she brought bread, or wheat, or barley, or dates on that day, the lands of Allah would have had more wheat, barley, and dates. She said to him, “Dismount so I may wash your head.” He did not dismount, so she brought the Maqam and placed it at his right side. He set his foot on it, and the trace of his foot remained upon it, and she washed the right side of his head. Then she moved the Maqam to his left side, and the trace of his foot remained upon it, and she washed the left side of his head. He then said to her, “When your husband comes, convey my greetings to him and say to him: The threshold of your door has become upright.” When Ishmael came, he noticed the scent of his father and said to his wife, “Has anyone come to you?” She replied, “Yes—a sheikh, the most handsome of people in face and the sweetest in scent. He said such-and-such to me, and I said such-and-such to him. I washed his head, and these are the prints of his feet upon the Maqam.” Ishmael (peace be upon him) said to her, “That was Abraham (peace be upon him).”

99-/631 _7- Then Abu ‘Ali said: This very story has been transmitted by ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Aban, from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), though some of its wording differs. He said at its end: “When your husband comes, say to him: A sheikh came here and he counsels you to be good regarding the threshold of your door.” So Ishmael (peace be upon him) threw himself upon the Maqam, weeping and kissing it.

99-/632 _8- Then he said: In another narration from him (peace be upon him): “Abraham (peace be upon him) sought permission from Sarah to visit Ishmael (peace be upon him). She permitted him on condition that he not remain away from her long and that he not dismount from his donkey.” He was asked, “How was that?” He said, “The earth was folded up for him.”

English (Quran 2:126–129, M. H. Shakir):

And when Ibrahim said: My Lord, make it a secure town and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the last day. He said: And whoever disbelieves, I will grant him enjoyment for a short while, then I will drive him to the chastisement of the fire; and it is an evil destination.

And when Ibrahim and Ismail raised the foundations of the House: Our Lord! accept from us; surely Thou art the Hearing, the Knowing.

Our Lord! and make us both submissive to Thee and (raise) from our offspring a nation submitting to Thee, and show us our ways of devotion and turn to us (mercifully), surely Thou art the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.

Our Lord! and raise up in them a Messenger from among them who shall recite to them Thy communications and teach them the Book and the wisdom, and purify them; surely Thou art the Mighty, the Wise.

Bashir, from one of the two (peace be upon them)—said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded Abraham (peace be upon him) to build the Ka‘bah, to raise its foundations, and to show the people their rites. So Abraham and Ishmael (peace be upon them) built the House one course [1] each day, until he reached the place of the Black Stone.” Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “Abu Qubays called out to Abraham (peace be upon him): You have a deposit with me; and he gave him the Stone, so he placed it in its place. Then Abraham (peace be upon him) proclaimed the Hajj among the people, saying: O people! I am Abraham, the Friend of Allah, and Allah commands you to perform Hajj to this House, so perform Hajj to it. All who would perform Hajj until the Day of Resurrection answered him; the first to answer him were the people of Yemen.” He said: “Abraham (peace be upon him), his household, and his children performed Hajj. Whoever claims that the sacrificial son was Isaac—then from here it was that he was sacrificed.” And it is related from Abu Basir that he heard Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them) assert that it was Isaac, whereas Zurara asserted that it was Ishmael.

99-/636 _4- ‘Ali b. Ibrahim—narrating from his father, from al-Nadr b. Suwayd, from Hisham b. Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him)—said: “Abraham (peace be upon him) was residing in the Syrian desert. When Ishmael (peace be upon him) was born to him from Hagar, Sarah became greatly distressed, since she had no child by him; she would harm Abraham (peace be upon him) regarding Hagar and grieve him. Abraham (peace be upon him) complained of that to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, so Allah revealed to him: The likeness of a woman is that of a crooked rib—if you leave her, you benefit [1] from her; if you try to straighten her, you break her. Then He commanded him to take Ishmael (peace be upon him) and his mother away.” He said, “My Lord, to what place?” He said: “To My Sanctuary and My secure place, and the first patch of earth that I created: Mecca.” Allah sent down to him Gabriel with the Buraq; he carried Hagar, Ishmael, and Abraham (peace be upon them). Whenever Abraham passed by a pleasing land with trees, palms, and crops he would say, ‘O Gabriel, to here, to here!’ and Gabriel would say, ‘No—go on, go on,’ until he reached Mecca, and he set him down at the place of the House. Abraham (peace be upon him) had pledged to Sarah that he would not dismount until he returned to her. When they came down in that place, there were trees there, so Hagar threw a cloak she had over a tree, and they sheltered beneath it. When Abraham had sent them off [3], settled them there, and wished to depart back to Sarah, Hagar said to him, ‘O Abraham, will you leave us [4] in a place with no companion, no water, and no crops?’ Abraham said, ‘Allah, who commanded me to place you in this place, will suffice you [5].’ Then he departed. When he reached Kada’—a mountain in Dhu Tuwa—Abraham turned toward them and said: ‘Our Lord! surely I have settled a part of my offspring in a valley unproductive of fruit near Thy Sacred House, our Lord! that they may keep up prayer; therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them and provide them with fruits; haply they may be grateful.’ [6] Then he went on, and Hagar remained. As the day advanced, Ishmael became thirsty and sought water. Hagar stood in the valley at the place of Sa‘y and called out, ‘Is there any companion in the valley?’ Ishmael (peace be upon him) disappeared from her sight, so she climbed Safa. A mirage shimmered in the valley—she thought it was water—so she descended into the valley bed and hastened. When she reached the place of Sa‘y, Ishmael (peace be upon him) was out of sight. Then a mirage shimmered for her near Safa, so she came down into the valley seeking water. When Ishmael (peace be upon him) was hidden from her, she returned until she reached Safa and looked; she did this seven times. In the seventh round, while she was on Marwa, she saw that water had sprung forth under Ishmael’s feet. She came back and gathered sand around it, for it was flowing; she confined it [7] with what she piled around it—hence it was named Zamzam. Jurhum were encamped at Dhu’l-Majaz [8] and ‘Arafat. When water appeared in Mecca, birds and beasts gathered around it. Jurhum noticed the clustering of birds and beasts at that place, so they followed them [9] until they found a woman and a child dwelling there under a tree for shade, and water had appeared for them. They said to Hagar, ‘Who are you, and what is your situation, and that of this child?’ She said, ‘I am the mother of the child of Abraham, the Friend of the All-Merciful; this is his son; Allah commanded him to settle us here.’ They said to her, ‘Do you permit [1] us to be near you?’ She said, ‘Wait until Abraham comes.’ When Abraham (peace be upon him) visited them on the third day, Hagar said, ‘O Friend of Allah, there are people from Jurhum here requesting that you permit them to be near us—do you grant them permission?’ Abraham said, ‘Yes.’ So Hagar permitted Jurhum, and they encamped near them and pitched their tents; Hagar and Ishmael felt comforted by them. When Abraham visited them the second time [2] and saw the number of people around them, he was greatly pleased. When Ishmael (peace be upon him) grew, Jurhum each gave Ishmael a ewe or two, and Hagar and Ishmael lived off them. When Ishmael (peace be upon him) reached adulthood, Allah commanded Abraham (peace be upon him) to build the House. He said, ‘My Lord, on which spot?’ He said, ‘On the spot where the canopy was sent down upon Adam and the Sanctuary was illuminated for it.’ The canopy sent down to Adam (peace be upon him) remained standing until the days of the Flood, the days of Noah (peace be upon him). When the world was drowned, Allah raised that canopy, and the world was submerged except for the site of the House, for which reason it was named al-Bayt al-‘Atiq (the Ancient House), because it was emancipated from drowning. When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded Abraham (peace be upon him) to build the House, he did not know where to build it, so Allah sent Gabriel (peace be upon him), who marked out the site of the House, and Allah sent down its foundations from Paradise. The Stone that Allah sent down to Adam (peace be upon him) had been whiter than snow, but when the hands of the unbelievers touched it, it turned black. Abraham (peace be upon him) built the House, and Ishmael (peace be upon him) moved stones from Dhu Tuwa. He raised it up [3] to nine cubits in height. Then He guided him to the place of the (Black) Stone, so Abraham (peace be upon him) brought it out and placed it in its current place. He made for it two doors: one to the east and one to the west—the western door is called al-Mustajar. Then he placed timber and idhkhir (sweet rush) upon it, and Hagar hung [4] a cloak she had upon its door, and they would shelter beneath it. When he built it and completed it, Abraham and Ishmael (peace be upon them) performed Hajj. Gabriel (peace be upon him) came down to them on the Day of Tarwiyah, the eighth of Dhu’l-Hijjah, and said, ‘O Abraham, rise and take your fill of water,’ for there was no water at Mina and ‘Arafat—hence the day was called Tarwiyah. Then he led him out to Mina, where he spent the night, and he did with him as he had done with Adam (peace be upon him). When Abraham (peace be upon him) finished building the House and performing Hajj, he said: ‘My Lord, make this a secure town and provide its people with fruits—those of them who believe in Allah and the Last Day.’ He said: ‘From the fruits of hearts, that is: endear them to people, so that they will visit them [5] repeatedly and return to them.’”

Yet a servant among the servants of Allah placed his foot upon a stone, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, commanded us to take it as a place of prayer. Solomon son of David (peace be upon them) performed Hajj to the House with the jinn, mankind, birds, and the wind. 99-/644 _12- From Abu ‘Amr al-Zubayri, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him, “Tell me about the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who are they?” He said: “The Ummah of Muhammad are the Banu Hashim specifically.” I said, “What is the proof that the Ummah of Muhammad are his Household whom you mentioned, to the exclusion of others?” He said: “The saying of Allah: ‘And when Ibrahim and Ismail raised the foundations of the House: Our Lord, accept from us—surely You are the Hearing, the Knowing. Our Lord, make us submissive to You, and from our offspring a nation submissive to You, and show us our rites, and turn to us—surely You are the Oft-Returning, the Merciful.’ When Allah answered Abraham and Ishmael, and made from their offspring a Muslim nation, and raised up among it a Messenger from it—that is, from that nation—reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and Wisdom, Abraham (peace be upon him) followed up his first supplication with his later one; he asked for them to be purified from shirk and the worship of idols, so that his authority would be sound among them and that they would not follow others. Thus he said: ‘And keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. My Lord! surely they have led many men astray; then whoever follows me, he is surely of me, and whoever disobeys me, then surely Thou art Forgiving, Merciful’ [4]. In this there is an indication that the Imams and the Muslim nation in which Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was sent are only from the progeny of Abraham (peace be upon him), due to his saying: ‘Keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.’”

— Ibrāhīm 14:35–36.

99-/645 _13- ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, regarding His saying, “Our Lord, and raise up in them a Messenger from among them,” said: It means from the descendants of Ishmael (peace be upon him). For that reason the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: “I am the supplication of my father Abraham (peace be upon him).”

English (Quran 2:130–132, M. H. Shakir): And who forsakes the religion of Ibrahim but he who makes himself a fool, and most certainly We chose him in this world, and in the hereafter he is most surely among the righteous.

When his Lord said to him, Be a Muslim, he said: I submit myself to the Lord of the worlds.

And the same did Ibrahim enjoin on his sons and (so did) Ya‘qub. O my sons! surely Allah has chosen for you (this) faith, therefore die not unless you are Muslims.

99-/646 _1- Ibn Babawayh said: ‘Ali b. Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Imran al-Daqqaq [1] (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, saying: Hamzah b. al-Qasim al-‘Alawi al-‘Abbasi narrated to us, saying: Ja‘far b. Muhammad b. Malik al-Kufi al-Fazari narrated to us, saying: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Zayd al-Zayyat, from Muhammad b. Ziyad al-Azdi, from al-Mufaddal b. ‘Umar, from al-Sadiq Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon him)—in a hadith of his [in which he mentioned the words by which Allah tested Abraham (peace be upon him)]—said: “[Then is] Allah’s answering his supplication when he said: ‘My Lord! show me how Thou givest life to the dead’ [2]. This is an ambiguous verse; its meaning is that he asked about the modality (the how). The modality is among the acts of Allah, Mighty and Majestic; whenever a knower does not know it, no defect befalls him, nor does any deficiency occur in his monotheism. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Do you not believe?’ He said: ‘Yes’ [3]. This is a general requirement for whoever believes in Him; whenever one of them is asked, ‘Do you not believe?’ he must say, ‘Yes,’ just as Abraham (peace be upon him) said. And when Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to all the spirits of the children of Adam, ‘Am I not your Lord?’ they said, ‘Yes’ [4]. The first to say ‘Yes’ was Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), so by his precedence in saying ‘Yes’ he became the master of the first and the last, and the most excellent of the prophets and messengers. Whoever does not answer this question with the answer of Abraham has indeed turned away from his creed.” Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘And who forsakes the religion of Ibrahim but he who makes himself a fool.’ Then (He mentions) Allah’s choosing him in this world, then His testimony for him in the end that he is among the righteous in His saying: ‘And most certainly We chose him in this world, and in the hereafter he is most surely among the righteous.’ The righteous are the Prophet and the Imams (blessings of Allah upon them), those who take Allah’s command and prohibition (directly), who seek rectitude from Him, and who avoid opinion and analogy in His religion, in His saying: ‘When his Lord said to him, Submit, he said, I submit myself to the Lord of the worlds.’ Then the following of him by the prophets (peace be upon them) after him, in His saying, Mighty and Majestic: …”
