S 94 Ayat 1 to 8

[Surah al-Inshirāḥ 94:1–8]

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Did We not expand for you your breast?

And take off from you your burden,

Which weighed down your back?

And did We not exalt for you your mention?

Surely with difficulty is ease.

With difficulty is surely ease.

So when you are free, strive hard,

And to your Lord turn (all) your attention.

99-/11723) Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb narrated from Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan and others, from Sahl, from Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā and Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn together, from Muḥammad ibn Sinān, from Ismāʿīl ibn Jābir and ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn ʿAmr, from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Abī al-Daylam, from Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him)—in a long ḥadīth—he said:

“So Allah, Glorious is His remembrance, said: ‘So when you are free, strive hard, and to your Lord turn your attention.’ That is: When you are free, raise up your standard and announce your successor. 99-/11724) Ibn Shahr Āshūb narrated from al-Bāqir and al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon them both), regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted: ‘Did We not expand for you your breast?’

“Did We not inform you who your successor is? So We made him your supporter and the humbler of your enemy—the one who bore your burden—and from him came forth the lineage of the prophets, by whom people are guided. And ‘We raised your mention’—so that I (Allah) am not mentioned except that you are mentioned with Me. So ‘when you are free from your religion,’ then appoint ʿAlī for the guardianship, by which the sect will be rightly guided.”

99-/11725) And from ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ṣāliḥ, from al-Riḍā (peace be upon him):

“Did We not expand for you your breast, O Muḥammad? Did We not appoint ʿAlī as your successor? And We removed from you your burden—the weight of fighting the disbelievers and the people of misinterpretation—through ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him). And We raised for you [through that] your mention—that is, We raised his rank along with your mention, O Muḥammad.”

**99-/11726) And from Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī: that Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad (peace be upon them both) recited: ‘So when you are free, strive hard’—he said: “So when you are free from completing the Sharīʿah, appoint ʿAlī for them as an Imām.”

99-/11727) Al-Bursī, through his chain, raised it to al-Miqdād ibn al-Aswad al-Kindī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

We were with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah send blessings upon him and his family) while he was clinging to the curtains of the Kaʿbah, saying: "O Allah, support me, strengthen my back, expand my chest for me, and raise my mention."

Then Jibrāʾīl (peace be upon him) descended to him and said: "Recite, O Muḥammad: ‘Did We not expand for you your breast, O Muḥammad? And remove from you your burden, which weighed down your back? And raised your mention—with ʿAlī, your son-in-law.’"

He said: So the Prophet (may Allah send blessings upon him and his family) recited it, and Ibn Masʿūd recorded it, while ʿUthmān removed it.【1】

‘And We removed from you your burden’—he said: the burden of war. ‘Which weighed down your back’—that is, it burdened your back. ‘And We raised for you your mention’—he said: You are remembered whenever Allah is remembered, and that is the saying of people: ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah.’
