S 2 A 30-33

He said: He is the One who created for you all that is in the earth, so that you may take lesson from it, and by it you may attain His good pleasure, and by it you may protect yourselves from the punishment of His fires. Then He turned to the heaven, undertaking its creation and perfection, and fashioned them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things; and by His knowledge of all things—knowing the benefits—He created for you what is in the earth for your welfare, O children of Adam.

99-/367 _2- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: with his chain, from al-Hasan ibn Mahbub, from Abu Ja‘far al-Ahwal, from Salam ibn al-Mustanir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “Surely Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created the Garden before He created the Fire; and He created obedience before He created disobedience; and He created mercy before He created wrath; and He created good before evil; and He created the earth before the heaven; and He created life before death; and He created the sun before the moon; and He created light before darkness.”

Reference: al-Baqara 2:30-33 M. H. Shakir: And when your Lord said to the angels: I am going to place in the earth a khalif, they said: What! wilt Thou place in it such as shall make mischief in it and shed blood, and we celebrate Thy praise and extol Thy holiness? He said: Surely I know what you do not know. [2:30] And He taught Adam all the names, then presented them to the angels; then He said: Tell me the names of those if you are right. [2:31] They said: Glory be to Thee! we have no knowledge but that which Thou hast taught us; surely Thou art the Knowing, the Wise. [2:32] He said: O Adam! inform them of their names. Then when he had informed them of their names, He said: Did I not say to you that I surely know what is secret in the heavens and the earth and (that) I know what you manifest and what you hide? [2:33]

99-/368 _1- Imam Abu Muhammad al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: “When it was said to them: He is the One Who created for you all that is in the earth [1]—the verse—they said: When did this occur? So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said—when your Lord said to the angels who were on the earth [together with Iblis, and they had expelled from it the jinn, the sons of al-Jann, and worship had become light]—I am making in the earth a vicegerent in place of you and I will raise you up from it. That weighed heavily upon them, because worship, upon their return to heaven, would be more burdensome for them.”

[1] al-Baqara 2:29.

They said: “Our Lord, will You place in it one who will cause corruption in it and shed blood, just as the jinn, the sons of al-Jann, did—those whom we expelled from this earth—while we declare Your praise, exalting You above what does not befit You of attributes, and we sanctify You—purifying Your earth of those who disobey You.” Allah, Exalted, said: “I know what you do not know. I know of the righteousness that will be in the one I appoint in your place what you do not know. And I also know that among you is one who is inwardly a disbeliever whom you do not know—namely Iblis, may Allah curse him.” Then He said: “And He taught Adam all the names: the names of Allah’s prophets, and the names of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), ‘Ali, Fatimah, al-Hasan and al-Husayn, and the pure ones of their progeny, and the names of men from their Shi‘a, and the tyrants among their enemies.” Then He presented them—the presentation of Muhammad, ‘Ali, and the Imams—to the angels, that is, He presented their forms, and they were lights in the shadows. He said: “Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful, that all of you give tasbih and sanctify, and that your remaining here is more fitting than bringing those after you.” Meaning: just as you did not know the unseen of those among you, it is more fitting that you do not know the unseen before it occurs, just as you do not know the names of persons you are looking at. The angels said: “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us; surely You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise in every act.” Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “O Adam, inform these angels of their names and the names of the prophets and the Imams.” When he informed them and they came to know them, He took from them the covenant and pledge to have faith in them and to give them precedence. Allah, Exalted, then said: “Did I not say to you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you disclose and what you used to conceal—namely what Iblis harbored of refusing to obey Adam if commanded, and seeking his destruction if given power; and what you believed—that none who comes after you will be superior to you—whereas Muhammad and his pure family, whose names Adam informed you of, are superior to you.”

99-/369 _2- Ibn Babawayh said: We were told by Muhammad ibn Musa ibn al-Mutawakkil (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: We were told by Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Abdillah al-Kufi, from Muhammad ibn Isma‘il al-Barmaki [2], from al-Husayn [3] ibn Sa‘id, from Muhammad ibn Ziyad, from Ayman ibn Muhraz, from al-Sadiq Ja‘far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon him): “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, taught Adam (peace be upon him) the names of all the proofs of Allah [4]. Then He presented them—while they were spirits—to the angels, and said: Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful that you are more entitled to the vicegerency on the earth—due to your tasbih and sanctification—than Adam (peace be upon him). They said: Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us; surely You are the Knowing, the Wise. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: O Adam, inform them of their names. When he informed them of their names, they came to know the magnitude of their rank with Allah, Mighty is His remembrance, and they realized that they were more entitled to be His vicegerents in His earth and His proofs over His creation. Then He concealed them from their sight and bound them to their authority and love, and said to them: Did I not say to you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth and I know what you disclose and what you were concealing.” Then Ibn Babawayh said: “This was also narrated to us by Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qattan, who said: We were told by al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali al-Sakkari, who said: We were told by Muhammad ibn Zakariyya al-Jawhari, who said: We were told by Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Amarah, from his father, from al-Sadiq Ja‘far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them).”

99-/370 _3- Al-‘Ayyashi said: Hisham ibn Salim related that Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “The angels would not have known to say: ‘Will You place in it one who will cause corruption in it and shed blood,’ had they not already seen those who caused corruption in it and shed blood.”

99-/371 _4- From Muhammad ibn Marwan, from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said: “I was circumambulating the House with my father (peace be upon him) when a tall, broad-sided [1] man approached, wearing a turban. He said: Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah. My father returned the greeting. He said: There are things I wish to ask you about; none remain who know them except one or two men. When my father completed the tawaf, he entered the Hijr [2] and prayed two units, then said: Here, O Ja‘far. Then he turned to the man, and my father said to him: It seems you are a stranger? He said: Yes. Inform me about this circumambulation—how did it come to be, and why? He said: When Allah said to the angels: I am making in the earth a vicegerent, they said: Will You place in it one who will cause corruption in it… to the end of the verse. That was from those of them who disobeyed, so He veiled Himself from them for seven years. They clung to the Throne, seeking refuge, saying: Labbayka Dha al-Ma‘arij, labbayk, until He accepted their repentance. When Adam committed the sin, he circumambulated the House until Allah accepted from him.” He said: “You have spoken the truth,” and my father was amazed at his saying, “You have spoken the truth.” He said: “Inform me about Nun, the Pen, and what they inscribe [3].”

He said: “Nun is a river in Paradise, whiter than milk. Allah commanded the Pen, and it flowed with what is and what will be. It is set before Him: whatever He wills, He increases in it; whatever He wills, He decreases from it; whatever He wills, is; and what He does not will, is not.” He said, “You have spoken the truth,” and my father was astonished at his saying, “You have spoken the truth.” He said: “Inform me about His saying: In their wealth there is a known right [1]—what is this known right?” He said: “It is that which a man brings out from his wealth, not from the zakat; it is for calamities and for maintaining ties.” He said: “You have spoken the truth.” Then the man rose. My father said: “Bring the man to me.” I searched for him but did not find him.

99-/372 _5- From Muhammad ibn Marwan who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “I was with my father in the Hijr, and while he was standing in prayer, a man came and sat by him. When he finished, he greeted him and said: I ask you about three things that none knows except you and one other man. He said: What are they? He said: Inform me, what was the reason for tawaf around this House? He said: When Allah, Blessed and Exalted, commanded the angels to prostrate to Adam, the angels retorted: Will You place in it one who will cause corruption in it and shed blood, while we glorify You with praise and sanctify You? He said: Surely I know what you do not know. He became angry with them. Then they sought repentance, and He commanded them to circumambulate al-Durrah—the Oft-Visited House—so they remained there circling for seven years, seeking forgiveness of Allah for what they had said. Then He accepted their repentance and was pleased with them. That was the origin of tawaf. Then Allah made the Sacred House opposite al-Durrah, as repentance for the sinners from the children of Adam and a purification for them.” He then mentioned the other two questions similar to the first narration, and “the man said: You have spoken the truth.” I said: Who is this man, my father? He said: “My son, this is al-Khidr (peace be upon him).”»

99-/373 _6- ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: And when your Lord said to the angels: I am making in the earth a vicegerent… said: “They objected to Allah, saying: Will You place in it one who will cause corruption in it and shed blood? They said this because of a creation that had passed—meaning al-Jann, the father of the jinn [2]. And [their words], We glorify You with praise and sanctify You—thus they reminded Allah of their worship of Him, so He turned away from them. Then He taught Adam all the names, then said to the angels: Inform Me of the names of these. They said: Glory be to You; we have no knowledge. He said: O Adam, inform them of their names—so he informed them. Then He said to them: Prostrate to Adam [3]. They prostrated and said in their prostration—in themselves: We did not think that Allah would create a creation more honored to Him than us; we are Allah’s treasurers and His neighbors and the closest of creation to Him. When they raised their heads, He said: Allah knows what you disclose—your objection to Me—and what you were concealing: We thought that Allah would not create a creation more honored to Him than us [1]. When the angels realized they had fallen into error, they sought refuge at the Throne. It was a group of angels—those around the Throne; not all the angels said: We did not think He would create one more honored than us. Those were the ones commanded to prostrate, so they clung to the Throne, gesturing with their hands”—and he indicated by circling his finger—“and they will continue to circle around the Throne until the Day of Resurrection. When Adam committed the error, Allah made this House for whoever among his offspring committed an error—to come to it and seek refuge by it from the children of Adam (peace be upon him) as those angels had sought refuge at the Throne. When Adam descended to the earth, he circumambulated the House. When he reached al-Mustajar, he drew near to the House, raised his hands to the heaven, and said: My Lord, forgive me. He was called: I have forgiven you. He said: My Lord, and for my offspring? He was called: O Adam, whoever comes to Me from your offspring and acknowledges [2] his sin at this place, I will forgive him.”

99-/374 _7- From ‘Isa ibn Hamzah [3], who said: A man said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): May I be your ransom, people claim that the lifespan of this world is seven thousand years! He said: “It is not as they say. Allah created it for fifty thousand years, then left it a barren, empty plain [4] for ten thousand years. Then Allah manifested a manifestation (bada’) and created in it a creation that was neither jinn nor angels nor humans, and decreed for them ten thousand years. When their terms drew near, they corrupted in it, so Allah utterly destroyed them. Then He left it a barren, empty plain for ten thousand years. Then He created the jinn and decreed for them ten thousand years. When their terms drew near, they corrupted in it and shed blood, and this is Allah’s saying [5]: Will You place in it one who will cause corruption in it and shed blood—as the sons of al-Jann shed blood—so Allah destroyed them. Then Allah manifested (bada’) and created Adam, and decreed for him ten thousand years. Of that, seven thousand and two hundred years have passed, and you are in the last times.”

99-/375 _8- He said: Zurara said: I entered upon Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), and he said: “What do you have of the Shi‘a’s narrations?” I said: I have many of them; I even considered lighting a fire for them and burning them. He said: “Hide them away; you will forget what you found objectionable in them.” The thought of the Adamites occurred to me, and he said: “What was the angels’ knowledge when they said: Will You place in it one who will cause corruption in it and shed blood?”

99-/376 _9- He said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), when narrating this report, would say: “It is a refutation of the Qadariyya.” Then Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Adam had in heaven a close angel-friend. When Adam descended from heaven to the earth, the angel felt lonely, complained to Allah, and asked Him to allow him [to descend to Adam]. He was permitted, and he descended to him, finding him seated in a barren expanse of the earth. When Adam saw him, he placed his hand on his head and cried out—a cry that, it is related, was heard by most creatures. The angel said to him: O Adam, it seems you have disobeyed your Lord and burdened yourself with what you cannot bear. Do you know what Allah said to us of you, and we answered Him? He said: No. He said: He said: I am making in the earth a vicegerent. We said: Will You place in it one who will cause corruption in it and shed blood? So He created you to be upon the earth—does it befit that you be in heaven?” Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “By Allah, Adam was consoled by this three times.”

99-/377 _10- From Abu al-‘Abbas, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about Allah’s saying: And He taught Adam all the names—what did He teach him? He said: “The lands, the mountains, the mountain passes [1], and the valleys”—then he looked at a rug beneath him and said—“and this rug is among what He taught him.”

99-/378 _11- From al-Fadl, Abu al-‘Abbas [2], from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about Allah’s saying: And He taught Adam all the names—what are they? He said: “The names of the valleys, plants, trees, and mountains of the earth.”

99-/379 _12- From Dawud ibn Sirhan the perfumer, who said: I was with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He called for the dining board [3], and we lunched. Then they brought the basin and the hand-wash [4]. I said: May I be your ransom, His saying: And He taught Adam all the names—does it include the basin and the hand-wash? He said: “The wide passes [5] and the valleys,” and he gestured with his hand: like this and like this.

99-/380 _13- Hariz, from one who informed him, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), said: “When Allah created Adam, He commanded the angels to prostrate to him. The angels said within themselves: We did not think that Allah had created a creation more honored to Him than us; we are His neighbors and the nearest of creation to Him. Allah said: Did I not say to you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you disclose and what you conceal—regarding what they disclosed about the matter of the sons of al-Jann and what they concealed within themselves. Then the angels who said what they said sought refuge at the Throne.”

99-/381 _14- Ibn Shadhan: from ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, from his father (peace be upon them), who said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever does not say that I am the fourth of the four caliphs, upon him is the curse of Allah.” Al-Husayn [1] ibn Zayd said: I said to Ja‘far ibn Muhammad (peace be upon them): You have narrated other than this, for you do not lie?! He (peace be upon him) said: “Yes. Allah, Exalted, said in His decisive Book: And when your Lord said to the angels: I am making in the earth a vicegerent—so Adam was the first vicegerent of Allah. And: O David! surely We have made you a ruler in the land [2]—so David was the second. And Aaron was the vicegerent of Moses, as He, Exalted, said: Take my place among my people and act rightly [3]; and he is the vicegerent of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family). So why [4] did he not say: I am the fourth of the four caliphs? [5]”

99-/382 _1- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from al-Husayn ibn Muhammad, from al-Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad, from one who informed him, from ‘Ali ibn Ja‘far, who said: I heard Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) say: “When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) saw Taym, ‘Adi, and Banu Umayya ascending his pulpit…”
