Yunus Ayah 35

Translation: He said: “These are the people of innovations, ambiguities, and lusts—Allah will blacken their faces, then they shall meet Him. Allah says: ‘as if their faces had been covered over with pieces of the dark night’; Allah will blacken their faces on the Day of Resurrection and clothe them with humiliation and abasement. Allah says: ‘These are the inmates of the Fire; in it they shall abide.’”

M. H. Shakir: And (as for) those who have earned evil, the punishment of an evil is the like of it, and abasement shall come upon them; they shall have none to protect them from Allah—as if their faces had been covered with slices of the night of darkness; these are the inmates of the fire; in it they shall abide.

Translation (al-Kāfī 8:355/252): Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding Allah’s words, “as if their faces had been covered over with pieces of the dark night,” said: “Do you not see that the inside of a house at night is darker than the outside? Thus their faces increase in blackness.”

Translation (Tafsīr al-‘Ayyāshī 2:17/122): He said: “Do you not see that the inside of a house at night is darker than the outside? Likewise, their faces increase in blackness.”

M. H. Shakir: And on the day when We will gather them all together, then We will say to those who associated others: Keep to your places, you and your associates; then We shall separate them, and their associates shall say: It was not us that you served. Then Allah is sufficient as a witness between us and you that we were quite unaware of your serving (us). There shall every soul become acquainted with what it sent before, and they shall be brought back to Allah, their true Patron, and what they devised shall escape from them. Say: Who gives you sustenance from the heavens and the earth? Or who controls the hearing and the sight and who brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living, and who regulates the affairs? They will say: Allah. Say: Will you not then guard (against evil)?

Translation (Tafsīr al-Qummī 1:312): On His saying, “And on the day when We will gather them all together, then We will say to those who associated (others): Keep to your places, you and your associates; then We shall separate them,” he said: “Allah will send a fire that separates between the unbelievers and the believers.” He said: His saying, “There shall every soul become acquainted with what it sent before,” meaning: it follows what it has sent ahead; and “they shall be brought back to Allah, their true Patron, and what they devised shall escape from them,” meaning: what they used to forge will be rendered null against them. And His saying, “Say: Who gives you sustenance from the heavens and the earth ... and call those whom you can besides Allah if you are truthful” [Yūnus 10:38]—this is decisive (muḥkam).

M. H. Shakir: Say: Is there any of your associates who guides to the truth? Say: Allah guides to the truth. Is He then Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed or he who himself does not go aright unless he is guided? What then is the matter with you; how do you judge?

Translation (al-Kāfī 7:4/249): Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) passed a judgment such that none before him had ever judged, and it was the first judgment he ruled after the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family). When the Messenger of Allah passed away and the affair devolved to Abu Bakr, a man who had drunk wine was brought to him. Abu Bakr asked him: ‘Did you drink wine?’ The man replied: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Why did you drink it while it is forbidden?’ He said: ‘When I accepted Islam, my dwelling was among people who drink wine and deem it lawful, and had I known it was unlawful I would have avoided it.’ Abu Bakr turned to ‘Umar and said: ‘What do you say, O Abu Hafs, regarding this man’s case?’ He said: ‘A serious dilemma—and Abu al-Hasan is its solution.’ Abu Bakr said: ‘Boy, summon ‘Ali for us.’ ‘Umar said: ‘Rather, the judge is to be approached in his home.’ They came to him with Salman al-Farisi, informed him of the man’s case, and the man related his story. ‘Ali (peace be upon him) said to Abu Bakr: ‘Send someone with him to go round the gatherings of the Muhajirun and the Ansar; whoever has recited to him the verse of prohibition should testify against him. If the verse of prohibition has not been recited to him, then there is nothing against him.’ Abu Bakr did with the man as ‘Ali (peace be upon him) said; no one testified against him, so he let him go. Salman said to ‘Ali (peace be upon him): ‘You have indeed guided them!’ He replied: ‘I only wished to renew the affirmation of this verse concerning me and them: “Is He then Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or he who does not find the way unless he is guided? What then is the matter with you; how do you judge?”’”

Translation (al-Kāfī 1:1/157; Ma‘ānī al-Akhbār 100): He said: “Allah grants success to the Prophets and the Imams (peace be upon them) and gives them from His stored knowledge and wisdom what He gives to none besides them; thus their knowledge surpasses the knowledge of the people of their time—regarding His saying: ‘Is He then Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or he who does not find the way unless he is guided? What then is the matter with you; how do you judge?’”

Translation (al-Kāfī 8:252/208): He said: “They reproach and deny us when we say there will be two calls. They say: ‘How will the true call be distinguished from the false one when they occur?’ He said: ‘What do you reply to them?’ I said: ‘We reply nothing.’ He said: ‘Say: The one who believed in it beforehand will affirm it when it occurs. Surely Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: “Is He then Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or he who does not find the way unless he is guided? Translation (al-Kāfī): A man from the ‘Ajaliyyah heard this report—“A herald will call: Lo, so-and-so son of so-and-so and his Shī‘a are the successful” at the beginning of the day; and “Lo, ‘Uthmān and his Shī‘a are the successful” at the end of the day. The man said: “How will we know which of the two is truthful and which is lying?” He said: “The one who had believed in it before the call will affirm it when it is announced; surely Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘Is He then Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or he who does not find the way unless he is guided? What then is the matter with you; how do you judge?’”

Translation (Kamāl al-Dīn wa Tamām al-Ni‘mah 4/650): He said: “I was with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) in his pavilion. He lifted a side of the pavilion and said: ‘Our matter had once been clearer than this sun.’ Then he said: ‘A herald will call from the heaven: Verily, so-and-so son of so-and-so is the Imam—he will call him by name; and Iblis—may Allah curse him—will call from the earth, just as he called out regarding the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) on the night of al-‘Aqabah.’”

Translation (Kamāl al-Dīn wa Tamām al-Ni‘mah 8/650): He said: “A herald will call out with the name of the Qā’im (peace be upon him).” I said: “Private or general?” He said: “General—every people will hear in their own tongue.” I said: “Who then would oppose the Qā’im after his name has been proclaimed?” He said: “Iblis will not leave them; he will call out and cast doubt among the people.”

Translation (Kamāl al-Dīn wa Tamām al-Ni‘mah 13/652): He said: “The voice of Gabriel will be from the heaven, and the voice of Iblis from the earth. So follow the first voice, and beware the latter lest you be tempted by it.”

Translation (Kitāb al-Ghaybah, al-Nu‘mānī 32/266): He said: “People reproach us and say: How will the true call be known from the false when both occur?” He said: “What do you reply to them?” I said: “We reply nothing.” He said: “Say to them: The one who believed in it before it occurs will affirm it when it occurs. Surely Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘Is He then Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or he who does not find the way unless he is guided? What then is the matter with you; how do you judge?’”

Translation (Tafsīr al-‘Ayyāshī 2:18/122): He said: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) mention the companions of the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family), then he recited: ‘Is He then Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed ... how do you judge?’ We asked: ‘Who is it—may Allah set you aright?’ He said: ‘It has reached us that it is ‘Ali (peace be upon him).’”

Translation (Tafsīr al-Qummī 1:312): Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said, regarding His words, “Is He then Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or he who does not find the way unless he is guided? What then is the matter with you; how do you judge?”: “As for the one who guides to the truth, they are Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family) and the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon them) after him; and as for the one who does not find the way unless he is guided, it is anyone—from Quraysh and others—who opposed his Household after him.”

M. H. Shakir: Or do they say: He has forged it? Say: Then bring a surah like it, and invite whom you can besides Allah if you are truthful.
