Ar-Ra'd Ayah 31-36

Translation:

The keeper of the gardens shook the Tuba tree, and it bore sheets—meaning certificates—equal to the number of those who love my Household. From beneath it, angels of light were created, and to each angel he gave a certificate. Then, when the Day of Resurrection comes and the Resurrection stands with its people, the angels will call out among the creatures, and they will not meet a single person who loves us, the People of the House, without handing him a certificate in which is written his release from the Fire. Thus, by my brother, my cousin, and my daughter, the necks of men and women of my community are freed from the Fire.

Translation:

And from him also, with his chain from Umm Salama, Salman al-Farisi, and Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), and all of them said—mentioning the narration of Ali’s marriage to Fatimah (peace be upon them)—that when God (Mighty and Majestic) made His angels witness the marriage of Fatimah to Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon them), He commanded the Tuba tree to scatter its fruit and what was in it of ornaments and garments. So the tree scattered what it contained, and the angels and the wide-eyed maidens gathered it. The maidens and the angels exchange these as gifts and take pride in them until the Day of Resurrection.

Translation:

From Anas ibn Malik: The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) said: In Paradise there is a tree called Tuba. There is no residence, palace, chamber, or house in Paradise except that it contains a branch from that tree, and its root is in my abode. Then some time passed as God willed, and he spoke to them on another day, saying: In Paradise there is a tree called Tuba. There is no palace, house, or residence in Paradise except that it contains a branch from that tree, and its root is in the abode of Ali. Umar stood and said: O Messenger of God, did you not tell us about this and say, “Its root is in my abode”? Then you told us a second time and say, “Its root is in the abode of Ali”? The Prophet (may God bless him and his family) raised his head and said: Do you not know that my abode and the abode of Ali are one, my chamber and the chamber of Ali are one, my palace and the palace of Ali are one, my rank and the rank of Ali are one, and my veil and the veil of Ali are one. He (Umar) then said: When one of you wishes to go to his family, how does he do it? The Prophet (may God bless him and his family) said: When one of us wishes to go to his family, God places a veil of light between me and him. When we finish that need, God removes that veil from us. Umar then recognized the right of Ali (peace be upon him).

Translation:

And from al-Tha‘labi’s Tafsir, with the chain raised to Jabir from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) was asked about Tuba. He said: It is a tree in Paradise; its root is in the abode of Ali, and its branches extend over the people of Paradise. They said: O Messenger of God, we asked you and you said: “Its root is in my abode, and its branches over the people of Paradise?” He replied: My abode and the abode of Ali are one in Paradise, in the same place.

Translation:

Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Abi Zahir—or another—from Muhammad ibn Hammad, from his brother Ahmad ibn Hammad, from Ibrahim, from his father, from Abu al-Hasan the First (peace be upon him), said: I said to him: May I be your ransom, tell me about the Prophet (may God bless him and his family): did he inherit from all the prophets? He said: Yes. I said: From Adam onward until it came to himself? He said: God never sent a prophet but that Muhammad (may God bless him and his family) was more knowledgeable than he. I said: Jesus son of Mary used to raise the dead by God’s permission. He said: You speak truth; and Solomon son of David understood the language of birds; and the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) was capable of these stations. He said: And he said: When Solomon son of David missed the hoopoe and doubted its matter, he said: “Why is it I do not see the hoopoe, or is he of the absentees?” [1] When he missed it, he became angry with it and said: “I will most certainly chastise him with a severe chastisement, or I will most certainly slay him, or he shall most certainly bring me a clear authority.” [2] He was angry because it used to indicate to him where water was. So here, while it is a bird, it was given what Solomon was not given—though the wind, the ants, humankind, jinn, devils, and the rebellious were obedient to him—yet he did not know the water beneath the air, while the bird knew it. And indeed God says in His Book: “And if there were a Quran with which the mountains were made to pass away, or the earth were traversed, or the dead were made to speak!” And we have inherited this Quran by which mountains are made to move, lands are cleft, and the dead are revived; and we know the water beneath the air. And in the Book of God there are verses for which nothing is intended but that God permits it, in addition to what God may permit of what those before have written, which God has made for us in the Mother of the Book. Indeed God says: “And there is nothing concealed in the heaven and the earth but it is in a clear book.” [3] Then He said: “Then We gave the Book as an inheritance to those whom We chose from among Our servants.” [4] So we are the ones whom God, Mighty and Majestic, has chosen, and He has made us inherit that in which there is an explanation of everything.

This hadith was also narrated by Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Saffar in Basa’ir al-Darajat from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn [5], from Hammad, from Ibrahim ibn ‘Abd al-Hamid, from his father, from Abu al-Hasan the First (peace be upon him), with slight variation [6].

And if there were a Quran with which the mountains were made to pass away, or the earth were traversed, or the dead were made to speak! Nay, the commandment is wholly with Allah. Do not those who believe know that if Allah had pleased He would certainly have guided all the people? And as for those who disbelieve, because of what they do, disaster will not cease to afflict them or to alight close by their abode, until the promise of Allah comes about; surely Allah will not fail in (His) promise. And certainly apostles before you were mocked at, but I gave respite to those who disbelieved, then I destroyed them; how then was My requital! Is He then who watches every soul as to what it earns? And yet they give associates to Allah! Say: Give them a name; nay, do you mean to inform Him of what He does not know in the earth? Or is it by an outward show of words? Nay! Their plan is made to seem fair-seeming to those who disbelieve, and they are kept back from the path; and whom Allah makes err, he shall have no guide. They shall have chastisement in this world's life, and the chastisement of the hereafter is certainly more grievous, and they shall have no protector against Allah. A likeness of the garden which those who guard (against evil) are promised: therein are rivers of water not altering for the worse, and rivers of milk the taste whereof does not change, and rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of honey clarified and for them therein are all fruits and protection from their Lord; (are these) like those who abide in the fire and are made to drink boiling water so it rend their bowels? And there are those of them who seek to hear you, until when they go forth from you, they say to those who are given the knowledge: What is it that he said just now? These are they whose hearts Allah has sealed and they follow their low desires. And (as for) those who follow the right direction, He increases them in guidance and gives them their guarding (against evil). Do then they who plan evil (deeds) feel secure that Allah will not make the earth to swallow them up, or that the punishment will not come upon them from whence they do not perceive? Or that He may not seize them in the course of their goings to and fro so that there shall be no escape for them? Or that He may not seize them by gradual diminution? For your Lord is surely Compassionate, Merciful. And those who disbelieve say: Why has not a sign been sent down upon him from his Lord? Say: Surely Allah makes him who will go astray, and guides to Himself those who turn (to Him). (As for) those who believe and whose hearts are set at rest by the remembrance of Allah, now surely by Allah's remembrance are the hearts set at rest. (As for) those who believe and do good, a good final state is theirs and a goodly return. And thus have We sent you among a nation before which other nations have passed away, that you might recite to them what We have revealed to you, and still they deny the Beneficent. Say: He is my Lord, there is no god but He; on Him do I rely, and to Him is my return. And if there were a Quran with which the mountains were made to pass away, or the earth were traversed, or the dead were made to speak! Nay, the commandment is wholly with Allah; have not yet those who believe known that if Allah please He would certainly guide all the people? And as for those who disbelieve, there will not cease to afflict them because of what they do disaster, or it will alight close by their abodes, until the promise of Allah comes about; surely Allah will not fail in (His) promise. They shall have chastisement in this world's life, and certainly the chastisement of the hereafter is much severer, and they shall have no protector against Allah. A likeness of the garden which those who guard (against evil) are promised: Therein are rivers of water without alteration, and rivers of milk the taste whereof does not change, and rivers of wine delicious to the drinkers, and rivers of honey clarified, and in it they shall have all kinds of fruits and (forgiveness) from their Lord. (Are these) like those who abide in the fire and are made to drink boiling water so it tears their bowels? And there are those of them who listen to you until when they go forth from you, they say to those who are given the knowledge: What is it that he said just now? These are they whose hearts Allah has set a seal upon and they follow their low desires. Or that He may not seize them in the course of their goings to and fro, then they shall not be able to frustrate (Him)? Or that He may not seize them by gradual destruction? So surely your Lord is Compassionate, Merciful. And those who disbelieve say: Why is not a sign sent down upon him by his Lord?

Translation:

And from him, he said: In the narration of Abu al-Jarud from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, “Disaster will not cease to afflict them because of what they do”: It is vengeance, or it descends near their homes and befalls a people other than them, so they see it and hear of it. Those it befalls are disobedient unbelievers like them, and they do not take admonition from one another. They remain thus until the promise of God comes—the victory He promised the believers—and God will disgrace the unbelievers.

Translation:

Then Ali ibn Ibrahim said about His saying, “So I gave respite to those who disbelieved, then I destroyed them”: meaning, I prolonged their hopes, then I destroyed them.

Translation:

Then Ali ibn Ibrahim said: In the narration of Abu al-Jarud from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, “Is He then who watches every soul as to what it earns? And they ascribe to Allah associates. Say: Name them. Or do you inform Him of what He does not know in the earth? Or is it by an outward show of words?”: “The outward show of words” is sustenance.

Translation:

Then Ali ibn Ibrahim said about His saying, “And they shall have no protector against Allah,” meaning, no defender; and “the end of the unbelievers is the Fire,” meaning, their recompense’s outcome is the Fire.

Translation:

And from him: Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) said: This fire of yours is one part of seventy parts of the Fire of Hell. It has been extinguished seventy times with water, then it blazed up again. Were it not so, no human could extinguish it. It will be brought on the Day of Resurrection until it is placed over the (Hell-)Fire, whereupon it will let out a scream such that no close angel nor sent prophet will remain but that he will fall to his knees out of terror at its scream.

Translation:

Then Ali ibn Ibrahim said: In the narration of Abu al-Jarud from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, “Those whom We have given the Book rejoice in what has been sent down to you”: they rejoiced at the Book of God when it was recited to them; and when they recited it, their eyes overflowed with tears out of fear and sorrow—and he is Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him). And in the reading of Ibn Mas‘ud: “And what We have sent down to you—the Book—is the truth; and whoever believes in it,” meaning that Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) believes in it. “And of the confederates are those who deny part of it”: they denied, from its interpretation, what was revealed regarding Ali and the Family of Muhammad (God’s blessings upon them), while believing in part of it. As for the polytheists, they denied all of it, its beginning and its end, and denied that Muhammad is the Messenger of God.

Translation (Quran 13:38, M. H. Shakir):

And certainly We sent messengers before you and appointed for them wives and children.

Translation:

Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, with his chain from Sahl, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali, from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Walid al-Kindi, said: We entered upon Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him) during the time of Marwan. He said: Who are you? We said: From the people of Kufa. He said: There is no town among the towns with more love for us than the people of Kufa—especially this group. God, exalted be His remembrance, has guided you to a matter which people have been ignorant of. You loved us while people hated us; you followed us while people opposed us; you affirmed us while people denied us. May God give you life with our life and make you die our death. I bear witness that my father used to say: There is nothing between any one of you and seeing that by which God delights his eyes and makes him rejoice except that his soul reaches here—and he gestured with his hand to his throat. And God, Mighty and Majestic, has said in His Book: “And certainly We sent messengers before you and appointed for them wives and children.” We are the offspring of the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family). The shaykh narrated this hadith in his Amali, with his chain from al-‘Abbas, from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Walid: We entered upon Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him), we greeted him and sat before him. He asked us: Who are you? We said: From the people of Kufa—and he mentioned the hadith [1].

Translation:

Al-‘Ayyashi, from Mu‘awiya ibn Wahb, said: I heard him say: Praise belongs to God. Nafi‘, the servant of the House of ‘Umar, used to be in the house of Hafsa, and people would come to him in delegations, and that was not reproached in them nor considered ugly. Yet some people come to us out of kinship to the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family); they come to us fearful and in concealment, and that is reproached and considered ugly in them. God has indeed said in His Book: “And certainly We sent messengers before you and appointed for them wives and children.” The Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) is only like one of those—God made for him wives and made for him offspring. Then none believed along with any of the prophets as many as believed along with the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family) from among his Household. By that God honored His Messenger (may God bless him and his family).
