Surat al-Baqarah, Verses 222–223

99-/1140 _13- From ‘Alī, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about Allah’s words regarding orphans: And if you mingle with them, then they are your brothers. He said: They may have dates and milk, and you may have the like of it, in proportion to what suffices you and suffices them; and Allah does not conceal from Him the corrupter as opposed to the reformer.

99-/1141 _14- From ‘Abd al-Rahmān b. al-Hajjāj, from Abū al-Hasan Mūsā (peace be upon him). He said: I said to him: There is property of an orphan with me while he is in my care; I spend on him from it, and at times I partake of some of the food that is his, while what I do for him is more. He said: There is no harm in that; surely Allah knows the corrupter from the reformer.

And do not marry idolatresses until they believe; and certainly a believing maid is better than an idolatress even though she should please you; and do not give (your women) in marriage to idolaters until they believe; and certainly a believing man-slave is better than an idolater even though he should please you; these invite to the fire, and Allah invites to the garden and to forgiveness by His will, and makes clear His communications to men that they may be mindful. (Al-Baqarah 2:221, M. H. Shakir)

99-/1142 _1- Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb: from Muhammad b. Yahyā, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from Ibn Faddāl, from al-Hasan b. al-Jahm, who said: Abū al-Hasan al-Ridā (peace be upon him) said to me: O Abā Muhammad, what do you say regarding a man who marries a Christian woman while he has a Muslim wife? I said: May I be ransomed for you—what is my word before you?! He said: You must say it, for by it you will know my view. I said: It is not permissible to marry a Christian woman along with a Muslim woman, nor without a Muslim woman. He said: And why? I said: Because of Allah’s saying: And do not marry idolatresses until they believe. He said: Then what do you say regarding this verse: And the chaste women from among those who were given the Book before you? [1] I said: His saying And do not marry idolatresses abrogated this verse. He smiled, then was silent.

And they ask you about menstruation. Say: It is a harm; therefore keep aloof from the women during the menstrual discharge and do not go near them until they have become clean; and when they have cleansed themselves, then go in to them as Allah has commanded you; surely Allah loves those who turn much (to Him), and He loves those who purify themselves.

Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth when you will, and send (good deeds) beforehand for yourselves, and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, and know that you will meet Him, and give good news to the believers. (Al-Baqarah 2:223, M. H. Shakir)

99-/1143 _1- Al-Shaykh in al-Tahdhīb, with his chain, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from al-Barqī, from ‘Umar b. Yazīd, who said: I said to Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): What is permissible for a man regarding a menstruating woman? He said: What is between her buttocks, but he must not penetrate.

99-/1144 _2- Ibn Bābawayh in al-Faqīh, with his chain: ‘Ubaydullāh b. ‘Alī al-Halabī asked Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about the menstruating woman: what is lawful for her husband from her? He said: She should gird herself with a wrapper up to the knees and uncover her navel; then he has access to what is above the wrapper.

99-/1145 _3- Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb: from Muhammad b. Yahyā, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from Ibn Mahbūb, from al-‘Alā’ b. Razīn, from Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding a woman whose menstrual blood stops in the last days of her period. He said: If her husband is overcome by desire, let him tell her to wash her private part, then he may have contact with her—if he wishes—before she performs the full ritual bath.

99-/1146 _4- Al-Shaykh in al-Tahdhīb, with his chain from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Īsā, from ‘Alī b. Asbāt, from Muhammad b. Humrān, from ‘Abdullāh b. Abī Ya‘fūr: I asked Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about a man who approaches a woman from her rear. He said: There is no harm, if she consents. I said: What then of Allah’s saying: Then go in to them as Allah has commanded you? He said: This concerns seeking offspring; so seek offspring from where Allah has commanded you. Indeed Allah, Exalted is He, says: Your wives are a tilth for you; so go to your tilth when you will.

99-/1147 _5- From him: with his chain from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Īsā, from Mu‘ammar b. Khallād, who said: Abū al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: What do they say about approaching women from their rears? I said: It has reached me that the people of Madīnah see no harm in it. He said: The Jews used to say: If a man approaches a woman from behind, the child will be cross-eyed. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: Your wives are a tilth for you; so go to your tilth when you will—from behind or from before—in opposition to the saying of the Jews; and He did not mean in their anuses.

99-/1148 _6- ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said: Al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) said: “When you will” means whenever you will, in the vagina.

99-/1149 _7- Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb: from ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, from his father; and a number of our companions, from Sahl b. Ziyād; and Muhammad b. Yahyā, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, all from Ibn Mahbūb, from Muhammad b. al-Nu‘mān al-Aḥwal, from Salām b. al-Mustanīr, who said: I was with Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) when Ḥumrān b. A‘yan entered and asked him about certain matters. When Ḥumrān was about to rise, he said to Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him): I inform you—may Allah prolong your life for us and grant us benefit through you—that we come to you and do not leave your presence until our hearts become tender, our souls turn away from the world, and what people possess of these wealths becomes insignificant to us; then we depart from you, and when we are among people and traders, we love the world. He said: Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: These are only the hearts; at times they are hard, and at times they are soft. Then Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: Indeed the companions of Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) said: O Messenger of Allah, we fear hypocrisy for ourselves. He said to them: And why do you fear that? They said: When we are with you and you remind and encourage us, we feel awe and fear, we forget the world and renounce it, as if we were beholding the Hereafter, Paradise, and the Fire while with you. But when we leave your presence and enter these homes, and we smell the children and see dependents and family, we are almost shifted from the state we were upon with you, as if we were upon nothing. Do you fear for us that this is hypocrisy? The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) said to them: No. These are the steps of Satan, who entices you toward the world. By Allah, if you were to remain upon the state you described yourselves with, the angels would shake hands with you, and you would walk upon water. And were it not that you sin and then seek forgiveness from Allah, the Exalted, He would create a creation who would sin, then seek forgiveness, so He would forgive them. The believer is often tested, oft-returning in repentance. Have you not heard the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: Surely Allah loves those who turn much (to Him), and He loves those who purify themselves; and He, the Exalted, said: And ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him (in repentance)? (Hūd 11:90)

99-/1150 _8- From him: from ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr, from some of our companions, raised (to the Imam): Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, granted to those who repent three characteristics—were He to grant a single one of them to all the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, they would be saved by it: His saying, Mighty and Majestic: Surely Allah loves those who turn much (to Him), and He loves those who purify themselves. So whomever Allah, Exalted, loves, He does not punish. The narration continues mentioning the three, and its completion—God willing—will come under His saying: And those who call not upon another god with Allah from Sūrat al-Furqān.

99-/1151 _9- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Jamīl, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: I heard him say: People used to cleanse themselves with stones and cotton; then ablution was instituted, and it is a good practice; the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) commanded it and practiced it; and Allah sent down in His Book: Surely Allah loves those who turn much (to Him), and He loves those who purify themselves.

99-/1152 _10- From Salām, who said: I was with Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) when Ḥumrān b. A‘yan entered and asked him about matters. When Ḥumrān was about to rise, he said to Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him): I inform you—may Allah prolong your life and grant us benefit through you—that we come to you and do not leave until our hearts become tender, our souls turn from the world, and what is in people’s hands of these wealths becomes light to us; then we leave you, and when we are among people and traders we love the world. He said: Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: They are only the hearts; at times the matter is hard upon them, and at times it is easy. Then Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: Indeed the companions of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) said: O Messenger of Allah, we fear hypocrisy for ourselves. He said to them: Why do you fear that? They said: When we are with you and you remind us, we are startled and fearful, we forget the world and renounce it until it is as though we behold the Hereafter, Paradise, and the Fire while with you; then when we leave you and enter these houses, and smell the children and see dependents, family, and wealth, we are almost shifted from the state we were upon with you, as though we were upon nothing. Do you fear for us that this is hypocrisy? He said to them: No; this is from the steps of Satan, to entice you toward the world. By Allah, if you were to remain upon the state you are upon with me—in the state you described yourselves with—the angels would shake hands with you and you would walk upon water. And were it not that you sin and then seek forgiveness from Allah, Allah would create a creation in order that they might sin, then seek forgiveness, so He would forgive them. The believer is often tried, oft-repentant. Do you not hear His saying: Surely Allah loves those who turn much (to Him)… and: And ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him (in repentance)? (Hūd 11:90)

99-/1153 _11- From Abū Khadījah, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: They used to cleanse with three stones, because they used to eat unripe dates and would pass hard droppings. Then a man from the Anṣār ate gourd, his bowels softened, and he cleansed with water. The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) sent for him—he said—so the man came, fearful that something unfavorable had been revealed regarding his cleansing with water—he said—so he (the Prophet) said…

And the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) said: Have you done anything today? He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. By Allah, nothing prompted me to cleanse with water except that I ate food and my bowels softened; the stones did not suffice me, so I cleansed with water. The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him and his family) said: Congratulations to you, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has sent down concerning you an āyah: Surely Allah loves those who turn much (to Him), and He loves those who purify themselves. You were the first to do this, the first of the oft-repentant, and the first of the purified.

99-/1154 _12- From ‘Īsā b. ‘Abdillāh, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) said: When a woman menstruates, it is unlawful for her husband to approach her in her vagina, due to Allah’s saying: And do not go near them until they have become clean. Thus it is permissible for a man to approach his wife while she is menstruating in what is other than the vagina.

99-/1155 _13- From ‘Abdullāh b. Abī Ya‘fūr, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about approaching women from their rears. He said: There is no harm. Then he recited this verse: Your wives are a tilth for you; so go to your tilth when you will.

99-/1156 _14- From Zurārah, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) regarding Allah’s saying: Your wives are a tilth for you; so go to your tilth when you will. He said: Wherever he wills.

99-/1157 _15- From Ṣafwān b. Yaḥyā, from some of our companions, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: Your wives are a tilth for you; so go to your tilth when you will. He said: From the front and from the back, in the vulva.

99-/1158 _16- From Mu‘ammar b. Khallād, from Abū al-Hasan al-Riḍā (peace be upon him), who said: What do they say about approaching women from their rears? I said: It has reached me that the people of Madīnah see no harm in it. He said: The Jews used to say: If a man approaches her from behind, his child will be cross-eyed. So Allah sent down: Your wives are a tilth for you; so go to your tilth when you will—meaning from behind or from before—in opposition to the saying of the Jews; and He did not mean in their anuses. And from al-Ḥasan b. ‘Alī, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), similar to it.

99-/1159 _17- From Zurārah, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about Allah’s saying: Your wives are a tilth for you; so go to your tilth when you will. He said: From the front.

99-/1161 _19- From al-Fatḥ b. Yazīd al-Jurjānī, who said: I wrote to al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) about the like of it, and the answer came: You asked about one who comes to his slave-girl in her rear; the woman is the man’s plaything, so she must not be harmed; and she is a tilth, as Allah, the Exalted, has said.

And make not Allah because of your oaths an obstacle to your doing good and guarding (against evil) and making peace between men, and Allah is Hearing, Knowing. (Al-Baqarah 2:224, M. H. Shakir)
