The Plain of Arafah

The first gathering was at ʿArafāt, when Adam (a.s.) looked toward the leg of the Throne and saw the names of the Five Pure Ones. Jibrāʾīl taught him to say:

“O Praiseworthy One, for the sake of Muhammad (s.a.w.a.); O Most High, for the sake of Ali (a.s.); O Creator, for the sake of Fatimah (a.s.); O Beneficent One, for the sake of Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Husain (a.s.), and from You comes all beneficence.”

When he mentioned the name of Imam Husain (a.s.), his tears began to flow and his heart became broken. He said:

“O my brother Jibrāʾīl, why is it that when this name is mentioned, my heart breaks and my tears flow?”

Jibrāʾīl then explained the tragedy of that noble one. The angels who were present listened along with Adam and they all wept.

Jibrāʾīl said:

“O Adam, this son of yours will be afflicted with a calamity before which all other calamities will appear small.”

Adam said:

“What is that calamity?”

Jibrāʾīl replied:

“He will be killed while thirsty, as a stranger, helpless and alone, having no helper or supporter. O Adam, if you could see him when he cries out:

‘Alas for the thirst! Alas for the fewness of my helpers!’

His thirst will become like a barrier between him and the sky, resembling smoke. No one will answer his call except with the strike of a sword.

Then they will slaughter him like a sheep, but from the back of his neck. They will plunder his belongings, and the heads of him and his companions will be carried through the cities together with his family.

Thus has it already passed in the Divine Knowledge.” [604]
