S 57 Ayat 13 to 17

On that day you will see the faithful men and the faithful women-- their light running before them and on their right hand-- good news for you today: gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein, that is the grand achievement. On the day when the hypocritical men and the hypocritical women will say to those who believe: Wait for us, that we may have light from your light; it shall be said: Turn back and seek a light. Then separation would be brought about between them, with a wall having a gate in it; the inner side of it shall be mercy, while the outer side of it shall be punishment. They will cry out to them: Were we not with you? They shall say: Yea! but you caused yourselves to fall into temptation, and you waited and doubted, and vain desires deceived you till the threatened punishment of Allah came, while the archdeceiver deceived you about Allah. So today ransom shall not be accepted from you nor from those who disbelieved; your abode is the fire; it is your patron, and evil is the resort. Has not the time yet come for those who believe, that their hearts should be humble for the remembrance of Allah...

/10484 ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm said: The light will be distributed among the people on the Day of Resurrection according to the degree of their faith. It will be allotted to the hypocrite such that his light will be in the big toe of his left foot. He will see his light and then say to the believers, “Wait for us so we may borrow some of your light.” The believers will say to them, “Go back and seek light.” So they will return, and a wall will be placed between them [which has a gate], and they will call out from behind the wall:

“O believers, were we not with you?” They will say: “Yes, but you caused your own souls to fall into temptation,” — he said: by sins — "and you waited and doubted..." — he said: you were in doubt and hesitated.

99-/10485 Al-Ḥusayn ibn Saʿīd in the book Az-Zuhd, from al-Qāsim, from ʿAlī, from Abū Baṣīr, who said: Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, the light will be distributed among the people on the Day of Resurrection according to the level of their faith. And the light will be given to the hypocrite in proportion to the big toe of his left foot, so he will tread upon his light and say, 'Wait for me so that I may borrow from your light.' It will be said: 'Go back and seek a light' — meaning to where the Fire was apportioned."

"Go back then and seek a light."

99-/10486 Ibn Bābawayh said: Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Qaṭṭān, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad as-Sinānī, ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad ibn Mūsā ad-Daqqāq, al-Ḥusayn ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Aḥmad ibn Hishām al-Mukattib, and ʿAlī ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Warrāq (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Zakarīyyā al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us, who said: Bakr ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn Ḥabīb narrated to us, who said: Tamīm ibn Buhlūl narrated to us, who said: Sulaymān ibn Ḥakīm, from Thawr ibn Yazīd, from Makḥūl, who said:

Amīr al-Muʾminīn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, those entrusted with the preservation among the companions of the Prophet Muḥammad (peace be upon him and his family) know well that there is no man among them who possesses a virtue except that I have shared it with him—and excelled him in it—and I have seventy virtues in which none of them shared with me."

I said, “O Amīr al-Muʾminīn, then inform me of them.” He (peace be upon him) said—and he mentioned the seventy—he said:

"As for thirty of them, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) say: 'My nation will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection under five banners. The first banner to arrive before me will be the banner of the Pharaoh of this nation—and that is Muʿāwiyah. The second will be with the Sāmirī of this nation—and that is ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ. The third will be with the Catholicos (Jāthlīq) of this nation—and that is Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī. The fourth will be with Abū al-Aʿwar as-Sulamī. And as for the fifth, it will be with you, O ʿAlī—under it will be the believers, and you are their leader.'"

Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will say to the first four groups: "Go back and seek a light." So a wall will be erected between them—a wall that has a gate. Its inner side contains mercy—and they are my Shīʿah, those who supported me and fought alongside me against the rebellious and those who deviated from the straight path. And the gate of mercy is my Shīʿah.

Then these (others) will call out: “Were we not with you?” They will say: “Yes, but you caused your souls to perish, and you waited, and you doubted, and the vain hopes of this world deceived you until the command of Allah came, and the deceiver deceived you concerning Allah.” “So today ransom shall not be accepted from you nor from those who disbelieved. Your abode is the Fire, it is your master, and evil is the destination.” Then my nation and my Shīʿah will arrive, and they will be given drink from the pool (ḥawḍ) of Muḥammad (peace be upon him and his family), and in my hand will be a staff of ʿawsaj (a kind of thorny branch), with which I will drive away my enemies as a shepherd drives away stray camels.

99-/10487 Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbās said: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Mahzīyār narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from al-Ḥasan ibn Maḥbūb, from al-Aḥwal, from Salām ibn al-Mustanīr, who said:

I asked Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted:

"Then a wall shall be placed between them with a gate, the inside of it in which is mercy, and the outside of it, before it, is punishment. They will cry out to them: Were we not with you?"

He (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, this verse was revealed about us, our Shīʿah, and the disbelievers. Verily, when it is the Day of Resurrection and the creation is halted on the path of the gathering place (maḥshar), Allah will erect a wall of darkness, within it a gate. Its inner side will contain mercy—that is, light—and its outer side will contain punishment—that is, darkness.

So Allah will place us and our Shīʿah on the inner side of the wall where there is mercy and light, and He will place our enemies and the disbelievers on the outer side of the wall where there is darkness. Then your enemies and our enemies will call out to you from the gate in the wall whose outer side is punishment: ‘Were we not with you in the world? Was not your Prophet and our Prophet one and the same? Was not our prayer and your prayer the same? Was not our fasting and your fasting the same? Was not our ḥajj and your ḥajj the same?’"

Then you turned away and abandoned following the one your Prophet had commanded you to follow. You awaited his downfall, and you doubted what your Prophet said about him. “By ‘the truth’ is meant the rising of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him) and those Imams (peace be upon them) who appeared after him with the truth. 99-/10490 ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm, regarding the saying of the Exalted: "So today ransom shall not be accepted from you..." He said: By Allah, He did not mean the Jews or the Christians by this, but rather He meant the people of the qiblah (i.e., those who profess Islam).

Then He said: "Your abode is the Fire; it is your master," —meaning: it is more deserving of you.

And His saying, the Exalted: "Has not the time yet come for those who believe..." —meaning: Has it not become obligatory.

"That their hearts should be humble for the remembrance of Allah" —meaning: that they should feel awe and reverence at the remembrance of Allah.

And let them not be like those who were given the Book before, but the time became prolonged to them, so their hearts hardened, and most of them are transgressors. Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its death; indeed, We have made the communications clear to you that you may understand.

99-/10491 Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Nuʿmānī said: Muḥammad ibn Hammām narrated to us, who said: Ḥumayd ibn Ziyād al-Kūfī narrated to us, who said: al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Samāʿah narrated to us, who said: Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Mīthamī narrated to us, from a man among the companions of Abū ʿAbdillāh Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad (peace be upon them), who said:

I heard him say:

"This verse in Sūrat al-Ḥadīd was revealed about the people of the time of occultation (ghaybah): ‘And let them not be like those who were given the Book before, but the term was prolonged for them, so their hearts became hard, and many of them are transgressors.’ Then He, the Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its death; indeed, We have made the signs clear to you so that you may understand.’ And he (the Imam) said: “Indeed, the ‘term’ (al-amad) refers to the time of occultation.”

99-/10492 Ibn Bābawayh said: ʿAlī ibn Ḥātim informed me in a letter he wrote to me, saying: Ḥumayd ibn Ziyād narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Samāʿah, from Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Mīthamī, from Samāʿah and others, from Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him), who said:

*"This verse was revealed regarding the Qāʾim: ‘And let them not be like those who were given the Book before, but the term was prolonged for them, so their hearts became hard, and many of them are transgressors.’"

99-/10493 Shaykh al-Mufīd, through his chain of transmission, from Muḥammad ibn Hammām, from a man among the companions of Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him), who said:

I heard him say:

"This verse was revealed about the people of the time of occultation (ghaybah): ‘And let them not be like those who were given the Book before, but the term was prolonged for them, so their hearts became hard, and many of them are transgressors.’ And al-amad (the term) refers to the period of occultation. It is as if He, the Mighty and Majestic, intended to say: ‘O nation of Muḥammad, or O community of the Shīʿah, do not be like those who were given the Book before, but the term was prolonged for them.’ So the interpretation of this verse applies specifically to the people of the time of occultation and its days, and not to others.

99-/10494 Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb from Aḥmad ibn Mihrān, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī, from Mūsā ibn Saʿdān, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥajjāj, from Abū Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"He gives life to the earth after its death..." He (peace be upon him) said: "He does not give it life through rain, but rather, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will send men who will revive justice, so the earth will come to life by the revival of justice. And the establishment of legal punishment (ḥadd) in it is more beneficial to the earth than rain for forty mornings."

99-/10495 And from him: from Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn aṣ-Ṣalt, from ʿAbdullāh ibn aṣ-Ṣalt, from Yūnus, from Mufaḍḍal ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥalabī, who asked Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:

"Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its death..." He (peace be upon him) said: "It means: justice after oppression."
