54. The Bird that said “Ya Husain”
On Sunday, 2/12/1380 (equal to the second of Muharram 1422 AH), at the Husainiyya of the late Ayatullah Sayyid Muhammad Ali Muḥaḥḥid Abṭaḥī, the skilled preacher Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimin Āqāy Mīrhandī said from the pulpit:
*“I have been blessed 17 times to be in Karbala on the night of Ashura. One day during the days of Ashura, I was riding a bus heading for the ziyarat of Janab Ḥurr. Most of the passengers were asleep. Suddenly, the cry of “Ya Husain” was echoing in the air. I was eager to see where this sound was coming from. The driver noticed and called me forward and said, ‘Are you looking for the source of the “Ya Husain” sound?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Look!’
I looked and saw that all the telephone and telegraph wires along the road were full of birds, and these birds were continuously saying “Ya Husain.”
Then the driver said, ‘These birds come to Karbala every year during Ashura for three days, and they all say “Ya Husain.”’”*
