(Qur’an 2:199) Then hasten on from where the people hasten on and ask Allah for forgiveness; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

99-/1019 _1- Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, and Muhammad b. Isma‘il, from al-Fadl b. Shadhan, both from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Mu‘awiyah b. ‘Ammar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Indeed the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family)—and he (peace be upon him) mentioned the Prophet’s Hajj—until he said: Quraysh used to depart (for ifadah) from al-Muzdalifah, which is Jam‘, and they would prevent the people from departing from there. The Messenger of Allah (blessings be upon him and his family) came, and Quraysh hoped that his departure would be from the place they used to depart. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him: Then hasten on from where the people hasten on and ask Allah for forgiveness (Qur’an 2:199), meaning Ibrahim, Isma‘il, and Ishaq in their ifadah from it, and those who came after them.”

99-/1020 _2- From him, with his isnad, from Ibn Mahbub, from ‘Abdullah b. Ghalib, from his father, from Sa‘id b. al-Musayyab, who said: I heard ‘Ali b. al-Husayn (peace be upon them) say: “A man came to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) and said: Inform me—if you are knowledgeable—about al-nas (the people), and the ones who resemble the people, and about al-nasnas (sub-people). The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: O Husayn, answer the man. So al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said: As for your saying, Inform me about al-nas—the people—then we are the people. For this reason Allah—blessed and exalted be His remembrance—said in the Book: Then hasten on from where the people hasten on (Qur’an 2:199). The Messenger of Allah (blessings be upon him and his family) is the one who led the people in ifadah. As for your saying, The ones who resemble the people, they are our Shi‘a and our loyalists; they are of us. For this reason Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said: So whoever follows me, then surely he is of me (Qur’an 14:36). As for your saying, al-nasnas, they are the great multitude”—and he gestured with his hand toward the masses of people—“then said: They are nothing but like cattle, rather they are further astray in path (Qur’an 25:44).”

99-/1021 _3- Al-‘Ayyashi: from Zayd al-Shahham, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about Allah’s saying: Then hasten on from where the people hasten on. He said: “Those were Quraysh. They used to say: We are most entitled to the House, and they would not depart except from al-Muzdalifah. So Allah commanded them to depart from ‘Arafah.”

99-/1022 _4- From Rifa‘ah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about Allah’s saying: Then hasten on from where the people hasten on. He said: “The people of the Haram used to stand at al-Mash‘ar al-Haram, while the people stood at ‘Arafah, and they would not depart until the people of ‘Arafah came up to them. There was a man nicknamed Abu Sayyar who had a spirited donkey [1], and he would outpace the people of ‘Arafah; when he came into view they would say: This is Abu Sayyar—then they would depart. So Allah commanded them to stand at ‘Arafah and to depart from it.”

99-/1024 _6- From ‘Ali, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: Then hasten on from where the people hasten on. Quraysh would depart from al-Muzdalifah and prevented the people from departing with them, except from ‘Arafat. (Qur’an 2:200–202) So when you have performed your devotions, then laud Allah as you lauded your fathers, rather a greater lauding. But there are some people who say: Our Lord! give us in this world, and they shall have no portion in the hereafter. And there are some among them who say: Our Lord! grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the fire. They shall have (their) portion of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in reckoning.
