S 3 A 68-72
وَ الْإِنْجِيلُ إِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِهِ أَ فَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ ثم قال: هٰا أَنْتُمْ هٰؤُلَاءِ أَيْ أَنْتُمْ يَا هَؤُلَاءِ حَاجَجْتُمْ فِيمَا لَكُمْ بِهِ عِلْمٌ يعني بما في التوراة و الإنجيل فَلِمَ تُحَاجُّونَ فِيمَا لَيْسَ لَكُمْ بِهِ عِلْمٌ يعني بما في صحف إبراهيم وَ اللّٰهُ يَعْلَمُ وَ أَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ ثم قال: مَا كَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَهُودِيًّا وَلَا نَصْرَانِيًّا وَلٰكِنْ كَانَ حَنِيفًا مُسْلِمًا وَ مَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
Translation: “And the Gospel, except after him? Will you not then understand?” Then He said: “There you are, these people—you disputed about what you have knowledge of,” meaning what is in the Torah and the Gospel, “so why do you dispute concerning that of which you have no knowledge,” meaning what is in the Scrolls of Abraham? “And Allah knows and you do not know.” Then He said: “Abraham was not a Jew nor a Christian, but he was (an) upright (man), a Muslim, and he was not one of the polytheists.” (Qur’an 3:67, M. 99-/1736 _2- الْعَيَّاشِيُّ: عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَلَبِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ) قَالَ: «قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ): مَا كَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ يَهُودِيًّا وَلَا نَصْرَانِيًّا لَا يَهُودِيًّا يُصَلِّي إِلَى الْمَغْرِبِ، وَلَا نَصْرَانِيًّا يُصَلِّي إِلَى الْمَشْرِقِ وَلٰكِنْ كَانَ حَنِيفًا مُسْلِمًا يَقُولُ: كَانَ عَلَى دِينِ مُحَمَّدٍ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ)».
99-/1736 Translation: Al-‘Ayyāshī: from ‘Ubaydullāh al-Halabī, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: “The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: ‘Abraham was not a Jew nor a Christian—not a Jew praying toward the west, nor a Christian praying toward the east—but he was an upright Muslim.’ He said: ‘He was upon the religion of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family).’”
قوله تعالى: إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ وَ هٰذَا النَّبِيُّ وَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَ اللّٰهُ وَلِيُّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ -إلى قوله تعالى- لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ [68-72]
Translation: His saying, the Exalted: “Most surely the nearest of people to Abraham are those who followed him and this Prophet and those who believe; and Allah is the Guardian of the believers … that they may return.” (Qur’an 3:68–72, M. H. Shakir; full passage reference)
99-/1737 _3- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ يُونُسَ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ): «أَنْتُمْ وَ اللَّهِ مِنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ». فَقُلْتُ: مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ، جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ؟ قَالَ: «نَعَمْ وَ اللَّهِ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ» ثَلَاثًا. ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَيَّ وَ نَظَرْتُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: «يَا عُمَرُ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ فِي كِتَابِهِ: إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ وَ هٰذَا النَّبِيُّ وَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَ اللّٰهُ وَلِيُّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ».
99-/1737 Translation: ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr, from Manṣūr ibn Yūnus, from ‘Umar ibn Yazīd, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) said: “By Allah, you are of the Family of Muhammad.” I said: “Of their very selves, may I be your ransom?” He said: “Yes, by Allah, of their very selves,” three times. Then he looked at me and I looked at him, and he said: “O ‘Umar, Allah says in His Book: ‘Most surely the nearest of people to Abraham are those who followed him and this Prophet and those who believe; and Allah is the Guardian of the believers.’” (Qur’an 3:68, M. 99-/1738 _4- أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ: عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ، عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ الصَّيْرَفِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ) يَقُولُ: «إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ وَ هٰذَا النَّبِيُّ وَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا» ثُمَّ قَالَ: «أَنْتُمْ وَ اللَّهِ عَلَى دِينِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ) وَ مِنْهَاجِهِ، وَ أَنْتُمْ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِهِ».
99-/1738 Translation: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Khālid: from Ibn Faḍḍāl, from Ḥammād ibn ‘Uthmān, from ‘Abdullāh ibn Sulaymān al-Ṣayrafī, who said: I heard Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) say: “Most surely the nearest of people to Abraham are those who followed him and this Prophet and those who believe.” Then he said: “By Allah, you are upon the religion of Abraham (peace be upon him) and his path, and you are the people most entitled to him.” (Qur’an 3:68, M. 99-/1739 _5- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ: عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ، عَنْ مُثَنًّى، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَجْلَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ)، فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ وَ هٰذَا النَّبِيُّ وَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قَالَ: «هُمُ الْأَئِمَّةُ(عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ) وَ مَنِ اتَّبَعَهُمْ».
99-/1739 Translation: Muḥammad ibn Ya‘qūb: from al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad, from Mu‘allā ibn Muḥammad, from al-Washshā’, from Muthannā, from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Ajlān, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, the Exalted: “Most surely the nearest of people to Abraham are those who followed him and this Prophet and those who believe,” he said: “They are the Imams (peace be upon them) and those who follow them.” (Qur’an 3:68, M. 99-/1740 _6- الشَّيْخُ فِي (أَمَالِيهِ)، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ -يَعْنِي الْمُفِيدَ- قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي حَيْدَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ السَّمَرْقَنْدِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْكَشِّيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ الْعَيَّاشِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُذَافِرٍ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ): «يَا ابْنَ يَزِيدَ، أَنْتَ وَ اللَّهِ مِنَّا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ». قُلْتُ: جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ، مِنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ؟ قَالَ: «إِي وَ اللَّهِ». قُلْتُ: مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ، جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ؟ قَالَ: «إِي وَ اللَّهِ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ -يَا عُمَرُ- أَمَا تَقْرَأُ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ وَ هٰذَا النَّبِيُّ وَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَ اللّٰهُ وَلِيُّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ؟! أَوَ مَا تَقْرَأُ قَوْلَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ اسْمُهُ: فَمَنْ تَبِعَنِي فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي وَ مَنْ عَصَانِي فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ [1]؟!».
99-/1740 Translation: The Shaykh in his Amālī said: Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad—meaning al-Mufīd—told me, saying: Abū ‘Abdillāh al-Ḥusayn ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Mughīra told me, saying: Ḥaydar ibn Muḥammad al-Samarqandī told me, saying: Muḥammad ibn ‘Umar al-Kashshī narrated to me, saying: Muḥammad ibn Mas‘ūd al-‘Ayyāshī narrated to me, saying: Ja‘far ibn Ma‘rūf narrated to me, saying: Ya‘qūb ibn Yazīd narrated to me, from Muḥammad ibn ‘Udhāfir, from ‘Umar ibn Yazīd, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) said: “O son of Yazīd, by Allah, you are of us, the People of the House.” I said: “May I be your ransom, of the Family of Muhammad?” He said: “Yes, by Allah.” I said: “Of their very selves, may I be your ransom?” He said: “Yes, by Allah, of their very selves. O ‘Umar, do you not read the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Most surely the nearest of people to Abraham are those who followed him and this Prophet and those who believe; and Allah is the Guardian of the believers’?” (Qur’an 3:68, M. Shakir) “Do you not read the saying of Allah, Blessed is His Name: ‘Therefore whoever follows me, he is surely of me, and whoever disobeys me, then surely Thou art Forgiving, Merciful’?” (Qur’an 14:36, M. 99-/1741 _5- الْعَيَّاشِيُّ: عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ)، قَالَ: قَالَ: «أَنْتُمْ وَ اللَّهِ مِنْ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ». قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ، مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ؟ قَالَ: «مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَ اللَّهِ» قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا. ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ لِي: «يَا عُمَرُ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ وَ هٰذَا النَّبِيُّ وَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَ اللّٰهُ وَلِيُّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ».
99-/1741 Translation: Al-‘Ayyāshī: from ‘Umar ibn Yazīd, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: “By Allah, you are of the Family of Muhammad.” He said: So I said: “May I be your ransom, of their very selves?” He said: “Of their very selves, by Allah,” three times. 99-/1742 _6- عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ) فِي قَوْلِهِ: إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ وَ هٰذَا النَّبِيُّ وَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَ اللّٰهُ وَلِيُّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قَالَ: «هُمُ الْأَئِمَّةُ وَ أَتْبَاعُهُمْ».
99-/1742 Translation: From ‘Alī ibn al-Nu‘mān, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “Most surely the nearest of people to Abraham are those who followed him and this Prophet and those who believe; and Allah is the Guardian of the believers,” he said: “They are the Imams and their followers.” (Qur’an 3:68, M. H. Shakir)
99-/1743 _7- عَنْ أَبِي الصَّبَّاحِ الْكِنَانِيِّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ) يَقُولُ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ وَ هٰذَا النَّبِيُّ وَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَ اللّٰهُ وَلِيُّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ -ثُمَّ قَالَ:- عَلِيٌّ وَ اللَّهِ عَلَى دِينِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَ مِنْهَاجِهِ، وَ أَنْتُمْ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِهِ».
99-/1743 Translation: From Abū al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Kinānī, who said: I heard Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) say concerning Allah’s saying: “Most surely the nearest of people to Abraham are those who followed him and this Prophet and those who believe; and Allah is the Guardian of the believers”—then he said: “By Allah, ‘Alī is upon the religion of Abraham and his path, and you are the people most entitled to him.” (Qur’an 3:68, M. 99-/1744 _8- وَ رَوَى الشَّيْخُ الطَّبْرِسِيُّ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَلِيٌّ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ): «إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِالْأَنْبِيَاءِ أَعْلَمُهُمْ بِمَا جَاءُوا بِهِ» ثُمَّ تَلَا(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ): إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ الْآيَةَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِنَّ وَلِيَّ مُحَمَّدٍ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ) مَنْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ وَ إِنْ بَعُدَتْ لُحْمَتُهُ، وَ إِنَّ عَدُوَّ مُحَمَّدٍ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ) مَنْ عَصَى اللَّهَ وَ إِنْ قَرُبَتْ قَرَابَتُهُ».
99-/1744 Translation: And al-Shaykh al-Ṭabrisī narrated that ‘Alī (peace be upon him) said: “The most entitled of people to the prophets are those most knowledgeable of what they brought.” Then he recited: “Most surely the nearest of people to Abraham are those who followed him …” (Qur’an 3:68, M. H. Shakir), then said: “The ally of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) is the one who obeys Allah, even if kinship is distant; and the enemy of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) is the one who disobeys Allah, even if kinship is near.”
99-/1745 _9- الزَّمَخْشَرِيُّ فِي (رَبِيعِ الْأَبْرَارِ): قَالَ عَلِيٌّ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ) «إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِالْأَنْبِيَاءِ أَعْلَمُهُمْ بِمَا جَاءُوا بِهِ» ثُمَّ تَلَى إِنَّ أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِإِبْرَاهِيمَ لَلَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ الْآيَةَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «إِنَّ وَلِيَّ مُحَمَّدٍ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ) مَنْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ وَ إِنْ بَعُدَتْ لُحْمَتُهُ، وَ إِنَّ عَدُوَّ مُحَمَّدٍ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ) مَنْ عَصَى اللَّهَ وَ إِنْ قَرُبَتْ قَرَابَتُهُ».
99-/1745 Translation: Al-Zamakhsharī in Rabī‘ al-Abrār: ‘Alī (peace be upon him) said: “The most entitled of people to the prophets are those most knowledgeable of what they brought.” Then he recited: “Most surely the nearest of people to Abraham are those who followed him …” (Qur’an 3:68, M. H. Shakir), then said: “The ally of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) is the one who obeys Allah, even if kinship is distant; and the enemy of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) is the one who disobeys Allah, even if kinship is near.”
/1746 _10- وَ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لِمَ تَلْبِسُونَ الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَ تَكْتُمُونَ الْحَقَّ وَ أَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ: أَي تَعْلَمُونَ مَا فِي التَّوْرَاةِ مِنْ صِفَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ) وَ تَكْتُمُونَهُ.
Translation: And ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said, regarding His saying, the Exalted: “O People of the Book! Why do you confound the truth with falsehood and hide the truth while you know?” (Qur’an 3:71, M. H. Shakir): that is, you know from the Torah the description of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), yet you conceal it.

وَ قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ: وَ فِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي الْجَارُودِ، عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ)، فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: وَ قَالَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ آمِنُوا بِالَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَجْهَ النَّهَارِ وَ اكْفُرُوا آخِرَهُ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ: «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ) لَمَّا قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ وَ هُوَ يُصَلِّي نَحْوَ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ، أَعْجَبَ ذٰلِكَ الْيَهُودَ، فَلَمَّا صَرَفَهُ اللَّهُ عَنْ بَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ الْحَرَامِ وَجَدَتِ الْيَهُودُ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ، وَ كَانَ صَرْفُ الْقِبْلَةِ صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ، فَقَالُوا: صَلَّى مُحَمَّدٌ الْغَدَاةَ وَ اسْتَقْبَلَ قِبْلَتَنَا، فَآمِنُوا بِالَّذِي أُنْزِلَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَجْهَ النَّهَارِ، وَ اكْفُرُوا آخِرَهُ، يَعْنُونَ الْقِبْلَةَ حِينَ اسْتَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ(صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ) الْمَسْجِدَ الْحَرَامَ: لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ إِلَى قِبْلَتِنَا».
/1747 _1- Translation: And ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said: In the narration of Abū al-Jārūd, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, the Exalted: “And a party of the People of the Book say: Believe in that which has been revealed to those who believe at the commencement of the day and disbelieve at the end of it, perhaps they may turn back” (Qur’an 3:72, M. H. Shakir): “When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) came to Medina and he was praying toward Bayt al-Maqdis, that pleased the Jews. But when Allah turned him away from Bayt al-Maqdis to the Sacred House, the Jews were angered by that, and the turning of the qiblah occurred at the noon prayer. So they said: ‘Muhammad prayed the morning prayer facing our qiblah, so believe in what was sent down to Muhammad at the beginning of the day, and disbelieve at its end,’ meaning the qiblah when the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) faced the Sacred Mosque, ‘so that they might return to our qiblah.’”
قوله تعالى: وَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ مَنْ إِنْ تَأْمَنْهُ بِقِنْطَارٍ -إلى قوله تعالى- وَ يَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللّٰهِ الْكَذِبَ وَ هُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ [75]
Translation: His saying, the Exalted: “And among the People of the Book is he who, if you entrust him with a heap of wealth, will pay it back to you, and among them is he who, if you entrust him with a dinar, will not pay it back to you unless you keep standing over him … and they tell a lie against Allah while they know.” (Qur’an 3:75, M. /1748 _2- قال عليّ بن إبراهيم، في قوله تعالى: وَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ مَنْ إِنْ تَأْمَنْهُ بِقِنْطَارٍ يُؤَدِّهِ إِلَيْكَ وَ مِنْهُمْ مَنْ إِنْ تَأْمَنْهُ بِدِينَارٍ لَا يُؤَدِّهِ إِلَيْكَ إِلَّا مَا دُمْتَ عَلَيْهِ قَائِمًا ذٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا لَيْسَ عَلَيْنَا فِي الْأُمِّيِّينَ سَبِيلٌ: فَإِنَّ الْيَهُودَ قَالُوا: يَحِلُّ لَنَا أَنْ نَأْخُذَ مَالَ الْأُمِّيِّينَ. وَ الْأُمِّيُّونَ: الَّذِينَ لَيْسَ مَعَهُمْ كِتَابٌ، فَرَدَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ: وَ يَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللّٰهِ الْكَذِبَ وَ هُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ.
/1748 _2- Translation: ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said regarding His saying, the Exalted: “And among the People of the Book is he who, if you entrust him with a heap of wealth, will pay it back to you, and among them is he who, if you entrust him with a dinar, will not pay it back to you unless you keep standing over him; this is because they say: There is no blame on us in respect of the unlearned (al-ummiyyīn)” (Qur’an 3:75, M. H. Shakir): The Jews said, “It is permissible for us to take the wealth of the unlettered.” And “the unlettered” are those who have no Book. So Allah rebutted them, saying: “And they tell a lie against Allah while they know.” (Qur’an 3:75, M. H. Shakir)
قوله تعالى: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللّٰهِ وَ أَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا أُولٰئِكَ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُمْ فِي الْآخِرَةِ وَ لَا يُكَلِّمُهُمُ اللّٰهُ وَ لَا يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ لَا يُزَكِّيهِمْ وَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ [77]
Translation: His saying, the Exalted: “Surely those who take a small price for the covenant of Allah and their own oaths—these shall have no portion in the hereafter, and Allah will not speak to them, nor will He look upon them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they shall have a painful chastisement.” (Qur’an 3:77, M.
