English translation:

Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said to him, “How do you give life and cause death?” He said, “I pick two men upon whom execution is due: I release one and kill one, thus I give life and cause death.” Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said, “If you are truthful, then bring to life the one you killed.” Then he said, “Leave this. Surely my Lord brings the sun from the East, so bring it from the West.” And it was as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “So the unbeliever was confounded,” meaning he was silenced, for he knew that the sun was prior to him.

99-/1435 _5- English translation:

Abu ‘Ali al-Tabrisi said: There is a difference concerning the time of this disputation. It is said—according to Muqatil—that it occurred at the time of smashing the idols, before he was cast into the fire. And it is said—according to al-Sadiq (peace be upon him)—that it was after he had been cast into the fire and Allah made it coolness and peace upon him. And it is narrated from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him): “Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said to him: ‘Bring to life the one you killed if you are truthful.’”

Qur’an 2:259 (M. H. Shakir):

Or the like of him who passed by a town, and it had fallen down upon its roofs; he said: When will Allah give it life after its death? So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him to life. He said: How long have you tarried? He said: I have tarried a day, or a part of a day. He said: Nay! you have tarried a hundred years; then look at your food and drink—years have not passed over it; and look at your donkey; and that We may make you a sign to men, and look at the bones, how We set them together, then clothe them with flesh; so when it became clear to him, he said: I know that Allah has power over all things.

99-/1436 _1- English translation:

‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from al-Nadr b. Suwayd, from Yahya al-Halabi, from Harun b. Kharija, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “When the Children of Israel committed acts of disobedience and rebelled against the command of their Lord, Allah wished to appoint over them one who would abase them and kill them. So Allah, Exalted, revealed to Irmiya (Jeremiah): ‘O Irmiya, what is a land that I have chosen from among the lands and in which I have planted the choicest of trees, but it turned false and brought forth carob?’ Irmiya informed the rabbis of the Children of Israel, and they said to him, ‘Return to your Lord to inform us of the meaning of this parable.’ So Irmiya fasted seven days, and Allah revealed to him: ‘O Irmiya, as for the land, it is Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem), and as for what I planted in it, they are the Children of Israel whom I settled therein; they committed acts of disobedience, altered My religion, and turned My favor into ingratitude. By Myself I swear, I shall test them with a tribulation that will leave the forbearing bewildered, and I shall empower over them the worst of My servants in birth and the worst of them in food; he shall overpower them with tyranny, kill their fighters, take their women captive, lay waste their dwellings by which they were deluded, and cast their stone which they boast of before the people into the refuse heaps for one hundred years.’ Irmiya told the rabbis of the Children of Israel, and they said to him, ‘Return to your Lord and say to Him: What is the sin of the poor, the needy, and the weak?’ So Irmiya fasted seven days, then ate a meal and nothing was revealed to him, then he fasted seven [more], and Allah revealed to him: ‘O Irmiya, desist from this, or I shall turn your face to your back.’ Then Allah revealed to him: ‘Say to them: because you saw evil and did not forbid it.’ Irmiya said, ‘My Lord, make me know who it is so that I may go to him and secure safety for myself and my household from him.’ He said, ‘Go to such-and-such a place; look for a youth the most afflicted, the basest in birth, the weakest in body, and the worst in sustenance—that is he.’ Irmiya went to that town and there was a youth in a khan, sick, cast upon a dung heap in the middle of the khan. His mother was throwing crusts, crumbling them in a bowl, milking a sow she had over them, then bringing it near to the youth and he would eat it. Irmiya said, ‘If in this world there is one such as Allah described, this is he.’ He approached him and said, ‘What is your name?’ He said, ‘Bukht-Nasr (Nebuchadnezzar).’ He knew it was he, so he treated him until he recovered. Then he said to him, ‘Do you know me?’ He said, ‘No, you are a righteous man.’ He said, ‘I am Irmiya, the prophet of the Children of Israel. Allah has informed me that He will empower you over the Children of Israel; you will kill their men and do such-and-such to them.’ The youth became exultant within himself at that moment. Then Irmiya said, ‘Write me a letter of safety from you,’ and he wrote it. He used to go out to the mountain to gather firewood, bring it into the city, and sell it. He then called to war against the Children of Israel, and they answered him; their dwelling was in Bayt al-Maqdis. Bukht-Nasr advanced with those who answered him toward Bayt al-Maqdis, and a multitude gathered to him. When Irmiya learned of his approach toward Bayt al-Maqdis, he went out to meet him on his donkey, having with him the letter of safety Bukht-Nasr had written for him, but Irmiya could not reach him due to the multitude of his troops. So he placed the letter upon a reed or a stick and raised it. [Bukht-Nasr] said, ‘Who are you?’ He said, ‘I am Irmiya the prophet who gave you the glad tidings that Allah would empower you over the Children of Israel, and this is your grant of safety to me.’ He said, ‘As for you, I have granted you safety. As for your household, I shall shoot from here toward Bayt al-Maqdis; if my shot reaches it, they have no safety with me, and if it does not reach it, they are safe.’ He took his bow and shot toward Bayt al-Maqdis; the wind carried the arrow until it lodged in Bayt al-Maqdis. He said, ‘They have no safety with me.’ When he arrived, he saw a mound of earth in the middle of the city and, within it, blood boiling—whenever earth was cast upon it, it would come out boiling. He said, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘This is the blood of a prophet of Allah; the kings of the Children of Israel killed him, and his blood boils; whenever we cast earth upon it, it emerges boiling.’ Bukht-Nasr said, ‘I will kill the Children of Israel continuously until this blood subsides.’ That blood was the blood of Yahya b. Zakariya (peace be upon him). In his time there was a tyrant king who committed fornication with the women of the Children of Israel. He would pass by Yahya b. Zakariya, and Yahya said to him, ‘Fear Allah, O king; this is not lawful for you.’ A woman among those with whom he committed fornication, when he was drunk, said to him, ‘O king, kill Yahya.’ He commanded that his head be brought; the head of Yahya (peace be upon him) was brought in a basin, and the head would speak to him: ‘O man, fear Allah; this is not lawful for you.’ Then the blood boiled in the basin until it overflowed to the ground; it gushed forth boiling and did not subside. Between the killing of Yahya and the campaign of Bukht-Nasr was a hundred years. Bukht-Nasr continued killing them; he would enter village after village and kill men, women, children, and every animal, while the blood boiled, until he annihilated them. He said, ‘Is anyone left in these lands?’ They said, ‘An old woman in such-and-such a place.’ He sent for her and struck off her neck over the blood, and it subsided; she was the last to remain. Then he came to Babylon, built a city there, settled, and dug a well. He cast Danyal (Daniel) into it and threw a lioness in with him. The lioness ate the clay of the well, and Daniel drank her milk, and he remained thus for a time. Allah revealed to the prophet who was in Bayt al-Maqdis: ‘Go with this food and drink to Daniel and convey to him My greeting of peace.’ He said, ‘O Lord, and where is Daniel?’ He said, ‘In a well in Babylon, in such-and-such a place.’ He came to him, looked down into the well, and said, ‘O Daniel!’ He replied, ‘At your service! A strange voice.’ He said, ‘Your Lord conveys to you peace, and He has sent to you food and drink.’ He lowered it down to him. Daniel said, ‘Praise be to Allah who does not forget one who remembers Him; praise be to Allah who does not disappoint one who calls upon Him; praise be to Allah who suffices whoever relies upon Him; praise be to Allah who does not consign one who trusts in Him to other than Him; praise be to Allah who rewards good with good; praise be to Allah who grants deliverance for patience; praise be to Allah who removes our harm at our distress; praise be to Allah who is our trust when our means are cut off; praise be to Allah who is our hope when our opinion of our deeds is bad.’ Bukht-Nasr saw in a dream that his head was of iron, his legs of copper, and his chest of gold. He summoned the astrologers and said, ‘What did I see in my dream?’ They said, ‘We do not know, but recount to us what you saw.’ He said, ‘I have been providing for you for so long, and you do not know what I saw in my dream?!’ He ordered them killed. Someone present said to him, ‘If anyone knows, it is the companion of the pit; the lioness has not attacked him; she eats the clay and suckles him.’ He sent for Daniel and said, ‘What did I see in my dream?’ He said, ‘You saw your head of iron, your legs of copper, and your chest of gold.’ He said, ‘Thus I saw. What is that?’ He said, ‘Your dominion has gone; you will be killed within three days by a man of Persian descent.’ He said, ‘There are seven cities under me; at the gate of every city are guards, and I was not satisfied with that until I placed a copper duck at the gate of every city—no stranger enters but that it cries out against him until he is seized.’ He said to him, ‘The matter is as I told you.’ He set horsemen everywhere and said, ‘Do not meet any creature but that you kill him, whoever he may be.’ Daniel was sitting with him. He said, ‘Do not leave me these three days; if these three days pass and I am safe, I will kill you.’ On the third day toward evening, he was overcome with grief and went out. There met him a youth who served a son of his, of the people of Persia—though he did not know he was of Persia. He handed him his sword and said, ‘O youth, do not meet any creature but that you kill him. If you meet me, then kill me.’ The youth took his sword and struck Nebuchadnezzar a blow and killed him. Irmiya then went out on a donkey, with him figs he had provisioned and some juice. He observed the predators of land, sea, and sky consuming corpses, and he reflected within himself for a while, then said, ‘How will Allah give life to these after their death, when the beasts have eaten them?’ So Allah caused him to die on the spot. That is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: ‘Or like him who passed by a town while it was fallen down upon its roofs; he said, “How will Allah give life to this after its death?” So Allah caused him to die a hundred years, then raised him to life—meaning He gave him life. When Allah had mercy on the Children of Israel and destroyed Nebuchadnezzar, He returned the Children of Israel to the world. ‘Uzayr, when Allah empowered Nebuchadnezzar over the Children of Israel, fled and entered a spring and disappeared in it, while Irmiya remained dead one hundred years, then Allah gave him life. The first thing He revived in him were his eyes in something like the skin of the egg, and he looked. Allah revealed to him: ‘How long have you tarried?’ He said, ‘I tarried a day.’ Then he looked at the sun, and it had risen further, so he said, ‘Or part of a day.’ He said, ‘Rather, you have tarried a hundred years. Look at your food and drink—it has not become stale—and look at your donkey, and that We may make you a sign for people. And look at the bones—how We raise them, then clothe them with flesh.’ He began to look at the decayed, split bones gathering to him, and at the flesh which the beasts had eaten assembling to the bones from here and there and adhering to them until he stood up—and his donkey stood up. He said, ‘I know that Allah has power over all things.’”

99-/1437 _1- English translation:

Al-‘Ayyashi: from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding Allah’s saying “Or like him who passed by a town…” He said: “Allah sent to the Children of Israel a prophet named Irmiya and said: ‘Say to them: What is a land I purified from the choicest of lands, in which I planted the choicest of plants, and cleansed it of every foreign thing, yet it turned false and brought forth carob?’ They laughed at him and mocked him, so he complained of them to Allah. Allah revealed: ‘Say to them: The land is Bayt al-Maqdis, and the planting is the Children of Israel. I cleansed them of every foreign thing and removed from them every tyrant; they turned false and committed disobedience to Allah. I will surely empower over them, in their land, one who will spill their blood and seize their wealth. If they weep to Me, I will not have mercy on their weeping; if they supplicate, I will not answer their supplication. Then I will lay it waste for a hundred years; then I will re-build it.’ When he informed them, the scholars were distressed and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is our sin? We were not acting as they did. Implore your Lord again for us.’ He fasted seven [days], no revelation came; he ate a meal, then fasted seven [days], no revelation came; he ate a meal, then fasted seven [days]. On the twenty-first day Allah revealed to him: ‘You shall desist from what you are doing—do you contend with Me in a matter I have decreed—or I will turn your face to your back!’ Then He revealed: ‘Say to them: because you saw evil and did not forbid it.’ So Allah empowered over them Nebuchadnezzar, who did with it what you have heard. Then Nebuchadnezzar sent to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, ‘You have been informed by your Lord and have told them what I will do to them; if you wish, remain with me where you wish, or if you wish, go out.’ He said, ‘No; rather I will go out.’ He provisioned himself with juice and figs and departed. When he had gone as far as the eye could see, he looked back at it and said, ‘How will Allah give life to this after its death?’ So Allah caused him to die a hundred years—He caused him to die in the morning and raised him in the evening before the sun set. The first thing created in him were his eyes like the skin of an egg. He was asked, ‘How long have you tarried?’ He said, ‘I tarried a day,’ and when he saw the sun had not set he said, ‘or part of a day.’ He was told, ‘Rather, you have tarried a hundred years; look at your food and drink, it has not become stale; and look at your donkey; and that We may make you a sign to people; and look at the bones, how We raise them, then clothe them with flesh.’ He began looking at his bones, how one joined to another, and he saw the veins how they flowed. When he stood upright, he said, ‘I know that Allah has power over all things.’ In Harun’s narration: he provisioned himself with juice and milk.”
