71. Ziyarat Ashura and Its Miraculous Effects

Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) placed everything he had upon the tray of sincerity and gave all of it in the way of God. God, in turn, granted him rewards in proportion to His Lordship:

1.         Cure is found in his soil.

2.         Du‘āʾ is answered beneath his dome.

3.         The remedy for every illness was placed in a single glance at him.

One of the tried and tested means of seeking intercession through Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) is Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā.

Reciting Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā and remaining consistent with it is very simple and easy. In any place and at any time, with a pure heart and sincere intention, this Ziyārah can be recited according to the instruction of the Ma‘ṣūm and the result attained.

How numerous are those who were unable to have children, and through reciting Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā became parents.

How many are those who were afflicted with the harsh and backbreaking disease of cancer and found healing through Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā.

How many were without shelter, and under the shade of Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā found a home and residence.

The abundant, astonishing, and miraculous effects of Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā cannot be confined within these pages, but as it is said: “If you cannot drink the entire ocean, at least taste it as per your thirst,” here we will point to a drop from the ocean and a few from the many:

1.         The late Āyatullāh Ḥājj Shaykh ‘Abdul Karīm Ḥā’irī, the founder of the Ḥawzah ‘Ilmiyyah of Qum (1276–1355 AH), writes:

During the days of my residence in Sāmarrā, an outbreak of cholera occurred. One day, I was in the presence of Āyatullāh Mīrzā Muḥammad Taqī Shīrāzī (1252–1338 AH), when my teacher Āyatullāh Sayyid Muḥammad Fashārkī (d. 1316 AH) entered and said to the Mīrzā: “Do you consider me a mujtahid?”

He replied: “Yes.”

He then asked: “Do you consider me just (‘ādil)?”

He replied: “Yes.”

He said:

“I issue a ruling upon all the Shī‘ah men and women residing in Sāmarrā to recite Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā and gift its reward to the pure soul of Hazrat Narjis Khātūn, and make her an intercessor to her son Hazrat Ḥujjat (may our souls be sacrificed for him).

I guarantee that whoever performs this act will not be afflicted by cholera.”

This ruling was circulated, and all the Shī‘ah of Sāmarrā acted upon it, and not a single one of them was afflicted. During this time, many of the Sunnis were struck with cholera and passed away, and out of shame, they would bury their dead at night.

Some of the Sunnis came to the holy shrine of al-‘Askarīyyain and said: “We greet you just as the Shī‘ah greet you.”

The late Āyatullāh Ḥājj Shaykh Murtaḍā Ḥā’irī narrated this story from his father, and the handwritten manuscript is present in the author’s library.

His notes, after his death, were published under the title “Sirr al-Dilbarān” and this story appears on pages 88–90 of that book.

2.         During the leadership of the late Āyatullāh Sayyid Muḥammad Ḥujjat Kuh-Kamari (1310–1372 AH), a severe drought occurred, to the point where bread reached the price of one tūmān while it used to cost only 10 shāhī.

That compassionate marja‘ selected forty upright and refined students from the ḥawzah and sent them to the sacred Masjid Jamkarān. He instructed them to recite Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā with one hundred salāms, one hundred la‘ns, and Du‘ā al-‘Alqamah in a group, under the open sky behind the rooftop of the mosque.

Afterward, they were to seek intercession from three of the “Doors of Needs”:

3.         Hazrat Mūsā ibn Ja‘far (a.s.)

4.         Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (a.s.)

5.         Hazrat ‘Alī Aṣghar (a.s.)

And ask God for the lifting of inflation and the descent of rain.

Forty righteous, learned, and pious students, by the command of the highest religious authority of Shī‘ism, set off for the lovers’ meeting place. They performed Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā and the intercession exactly as instructed by that great marja‘, and began their return journey toward Qom.

Before they even reached the village of Jamkarān, the mercy of God poured down as a torrential rain. The students were forced to remove their clothing, carry their shoes in their hands, and pass through the floods.

This historical event was first narrated to me by the late Muḥammad Amīn Riḍawī Saldūzī, the author of Tajassum al-A‘māl, who was one of the forty participants. I documented it in the book Karīmah (p. 481).

Later, this story was published by the Mar‘ashī brothers, both of whom were among the forty, in some sources.

The respected scholar Āqā-yi Gul Muḥammadī Abharī, who was one of the forty, told the writer that on that very day the price of bread dropped from one tūmān to six riyāls—i.e., a 40% reduction.

The late Āyatullāh Sayyid Ḥusain Hashtrodī was also among the forty individuals selected by Āyatullāh Ḥujjat for this mission.

If only our compassionate marāji‘ today, in times of hardship, would command the people to perform Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā and organize a general mobilization.

3.         The story of the pious wife of Ustādh Ashraf Ḥaddād is well known—she used to consistently recite Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā. On the night of her passing, Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) visited her three times.

During the third visit, he commanded that the punishment be lifted from the inhabitants of the cemetery.

This story has been narrated with a reliable chain by the late Ḥājj Mīrzā Abū al-Faḍl Tehrānī (Shifā’ al-Ṣadr, vol. 1, p. 126).

4.         Sayyid Aḥmad Rashtī, when he had fallen behind his caravan and was despairing of life, engaged in heartfelt intercession. Eventually, Ḥujjatullāh (God’s Proof) appeared to him, helped him rejoin the caravan, and after emphasizing the night prayer (ṣalāt al-layl) and Ziyārat al-Jāmi‘ah al-Kabīrah, he said:

“Why don’t you recite Ziyārat ‘Āshūrā?!

‘Āshūrā, ‘Āshūrā, ‘Āshūrā.”

This encounter and this instruction were conveyed directly by Sayyid Aḥmad Rashtī to the late Muḥaddith Nūrī.

5.         The late Āyatullāh Mīrzā Ibrāhīm Maḥallātī, uncle of the late Āyatullāh Ḥājj Shaykh Bahāʾ al-Dīn Maḥallātī, passed away on the night of 24th Ṣafar, 1336 AH, in Shiraz. That same night, the late Shaykh Mashkūr saw Hazrat ʿAzrāʾīl in a dream in Najaf and asked him: “Where are you coming from?”

He replied: “From Shiraz, from seizing the soul of Mīrzā Ibrāhīm Maḥallātī.”

He then asked about the state of the deceased in Barzakh. ʿAzrāʾīl replied: “He is in the best state. God has appointed a thousand angels to serve him.”

Shaykh Mashkūr narrated this dream to Mīrzā Muḥammad Taqī Shīrāzī, who wept intensely.

When someone said, “But it was just a dream,” he replied, “Yes, but it was the dream of Shaykh Mashkūr.”

The next day, a telegram arrived from Shiraz, confirming the accuracy and timing of Shaykh Mashkūr’s dream.n

The biography of the late Maḥallātī is detailed in the book A Great Man from the Region of Fars, and this story is widely narrated in other sources as well.

Shaykh Mashkūr (1287–1353 AH) was the son of Shaykh Muḥammad Jawād (d. 1335 AH), son of Shaykh Mashkūr Ḥuwalāʾī (1201–1272 AH).

Shaykh Mashkūr asked Hazrat ʿAzrāʾīl, “How did Mīrzā Ibrāhīm Maḥallātī attain such a station?”

He replied: “Through thirty years of continual recitation of Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā.”

It is narrated from the late Āyatullāh Malik Ḥusainī that the late Ḥājj Shaykh Abū al-Ḥasan Ḥadāʾiq (1259–1347 Shamsī) used to say:

“Whenever the late Mīrzā Ibrāhīm Maḥallātī fell ill and could not recite Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā, he would order me to recite it on his behalf.”

6.         The late Āyatullāh Shaykh Ṣadrā Bādkūbayī was regular in reciting Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā. He passed away on 11 Shaʿbān, 1392 AH. After twenty-three years, when his grave in Wādī al-Salām was unearthed during the demolition by the Baʿthist regime, his body was found fresh and untouched.

This incident is narrated with eyewitness testimony in Ajāsād Jāwīdān.

7.         The late Ḥājj Shaykh Ḥasan Farīd, a scholar residing in Tehran, faced a severe difficulty. He remembered the story of the late Maḥallātī and began the recitation of Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā from the first day of Muḥarram.

On the eighth day of Muḥarram, his problem was solved in an extraordinary manner.

8.         The late Shaykh ʿAlī Akbar Saʿīdī, who passed away in 1370 Shamsī and is buried in Imāmzādah Jaʿfar in Yazd, narrated that a Zoroastrian girl converted to Islam and married the late Ḥājj Abū al-Qāsim Balūrfurūsh.

Twenty years passed and they had no children. She was advised to recite Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā.

She recited it with one hundred salāms, one hundred laʿns, and Duʿā al-ʿAlqamah for forty consecutive days.

God granted them a son who grew up, married, and resides in Yazd.

9.         The late Sayyid Ḥasan Qūchānī (1295–1363 AH), famously known as Āqā Najafī Qūchānī, writes:

For the fulfillment of a religious need, I recited Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā for two consecutive forty-day periods, and I attained the result.

10.       The late Ḥājj Shaykh ʿAbd al-Nabī Arākī, who passed away in 1385 AH, wrote a book about Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā. He mentioned that the motivation behind writing the book was the fulfillment of a request through the blessing of Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā—a matter which seemed naturally impossible to him.

11.       The late Dr. Muḥammad-Hādī Amīnī says:

“Four years after my father’s death, on a Friday night before the morning adhān, I saw him in a dream. I asked, ‘Dear Father! Out of the hundreds of good deeds you performed, which one was the cause of your salvation?’

He replied, ‘Only the Ziyārat of Abā ʿAbdillāh al-Ḥusain (a.s.).’

I said, ‘But in these days (1394 AH), the path to Karbala is closed.’

He replied, ‘Attend the majlis of mourning for Imām Ḥusain, so that the reward of Ziyārat may be granted to you.’

Then he said:

‘Dear son! I always recommended consistent recitation of Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā. Now I say to you: Never abandon Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā under any circumstances.’”

12.       The honorable friend, the reciter of Imām Ḥusain’s majālis, the late Ḥājj Mīrzā Mahdī ʿAbāʾī (d. 26 Shaʿbān 1420 AH / 14.9.1378 Shamsī), spent his entire life reciting rawḍah, organizing majālis, and for over half a century, never abandoned the recitation of Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā under any condition.

He had a large white tasbīḥ with thick beads, and after reciting Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā, he would use it to count the curses and salāms, and all his friends knew this tasbīḥ.

One of his friends saw him in a dream and asked, “How are you now?”

He ran his hand over the beads and said, “This saved me.”

Meaning: Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā.

13.       Āqā Gul Muḥammadī Abharī, on the night of 13th Rajab 1425 AH / 9.6.1383 Shamsī, in the holy city of Mashhad, at the house of the late Āyatullāh Qummī, said:

“Someone had a stroke, and I suggested he recite Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā for three sets of forty days (i.e., 120 days).

He did it, and he was completely cured.”

14.       The respected friend, Ḥujjat al-Islām wal-Muslimīn Āqāy-i Maʿrifat, narrated on Saturday night, 7/8/1384 Shamsī (24 Ramaḍān 1426 AH):

During my stay in the sacred city of Mashhad, my mother called one day and said, "Your father's condition is very critical; you must come to Tabrīz immediately."

The university situation was such that it was impossible for me to travel. I went to the Ḥaram, pleaded sincerely, and then visited the late Mawlawī Qandahārī, requesting his duʿāʾ.

He said, “Go to Shaykh Ḥurr ʿĀmilī, and ask your need from him.”

At 6:30 PM, I went to the tomb of Shaykh Ḥurr, did tawassul, and said:

“If by 8:00 PM I receive news that my father is well and I don't need to come, then I will recite Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā on behalf of Shaykh Ḥurr for ten days.”

At 7:30 PM, my father called and said:

“I am fine now; there is no need for you to come to Tabrīz.”

One of his relatives saw her mother-in-law in a dream, hanging upside down and unresponsive to any questions.

When she asked her: “This Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā that I’m reciting for you—does it reach you?”

Her face lit up with joy and she responded: “Yes!”

16.       On Wednesday, 1/9/1391 Shamsī (6 Muḥarram 1434 AH), a scholar and reciter from Isfahan, in the Ḥusainiyyah of Āyatullāh Muwaḥḥid Abṭaḥī, narrated from the late Āyatullāh Ḥājj Āqā Aḥmad Imāmī (1352–1414 AH):

“One night, I saw Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) in a dream. He said to me:

‘Go to Jī Street, to a certain shop, and give that man forty thousand tūmāns.’

I woke up, checked my drawer, and found exactly forty thousand tūmāns. I took the amount and went to the shop I saw in my dream.

I found the shopkeeper sitting and deeply sorrowful.

I asked: ‘Why are you so distressed?’

He said: ‘I’m in debt of forty thousand tūmāns, and for forty days I have been reciting Ziyārat ʿĀshūrā for this intention. Today is the fortieth day, and nothing has happened yet.’

So I obeyed the command of Imām Ḥusain (a.s.) and handed the money to that person.”
