99-/1872 - Ali ibn Ibrahim said, regarding His saying: And remember Allah’s favor on you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts: It was revealed about the Aws and the Khazraj. War between them lasted a hundred years, and they would not lay down their weapons, neither by night nor by day, until children were born into it. When Allah sent His Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), he made peace between them, so they entered Islam, and the enmity left their hearts through the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), and they became brothers. [Quran 3:103 — M. H. Shakir: And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited, and remember the favor of Allah on you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts so by His favor you became brethren; and you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it; thus does Allah make clear to you His communications that you may follow the right way.]
99-/1873 - Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid, from his father, from Muhammad ibn Sulayman, from his father [1], from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: And you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it — by Muhammad — “By Allah, thus did Gabriel bring it down [2] to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).” [Quran 3:103 — M. H. Shakir: …and you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it…]
99-/1874 - Al-‘Ayyashi: from Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Basri al-Daylami, from his father, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: And you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it by Muhammad.
99-/1875 - From Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Maytham, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Receive the good news of the greatest favor upon you: Allah’s saying, And you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it. So the saving is a gift from Allah [3], and Allah does not take back His gift.” [Quran 3:103 — M. H. Shakir: …and you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it…]
99-/1876 - From Ibn Harun, who said: Whenever the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) was mentioned, Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) would say: “May my father, my mother, my soul, my people, and my household be ransomed for him! It is astonishing concerning the Arabs—how is it they do not carry us upon their heads! For Allah says in His Book: And you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it. By Allah, it was through the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) that they were saved.” [Quran 3:103 — M. H. Shakir: …and you were on the brink of a pit of fire, then He saved you from it…]

99-/1877 - 1- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: In the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: And from among you there should be a party who invite to good: “This verse is for the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and those who follow them—those who invite to good, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong.” [Quran 3:104 — M. H. Shakir: And from among you there should be a party who invite to good and enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong, and these are they who are the successful.]

99-/1878 - 2- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from Harun ibn Muslim, from Mas‘adah ibn Sadaqah, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say—and he was asked about enjoining right and forbidding wrong: Is it obligatory upon the entire community? He said: “No.” It was said to him: Why? He said: “It is only upon the strong, the obeyed, the one knowledgeable of what is right and what is wrong; not upon the weak person who does not find a way to distinguish one from another, saying [confusedly], from truth to falsehood. The proof of this is in the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic—His saying: And from among you there should be a party who invite to good and enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong. This is specific, not general—just as Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: And of Musa’s people there is a party who guide with the truth and thereby they do justice [1]; and He did not say: ‘upon the nation of Musa’ nor ‘upon all his people,’ while they were in that time diverse communities. And ‘ummah’ is [applied to] one and above, as Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: Surely Ibrahim was an ummah, devoutly obedient to Allah [2]—meaning: obedient to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. And there is no blame upon one who knows this, in this truce, if he has no power, nor excuse, nor [access to] obedience.” Mas‘adah said: And I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say—and he was asked about the report from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family): ‘The best jihad is a word of justice before a tyrannical leader’—what does it mean? He said: “This is on condition that he commands him after [first] knowing [what is right], and moreover it is accepted from him; otherwise, no.” [Quran 3:104 — M. H. Shakir: And from among you there should be a party who invite to good and enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong, and these are they who are the successful. Quran 7:159 — M. H. Shakir: And of Musa's people there is a party who guide with the truth and thereby they do justice. Quran 16:120 — M. H. Shakir: Surely Ibrahim was a model, obedient to Allah, upright, and he was not of the polytheists.]
99-/1879 - 3- Al-‘Ayyashi: from Abu ‘Amr al-Zubayri, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said about His saying: And from among you there should be a party who invite to good and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong: “In this verse there is excommunication of the people of the qiblah on account of sins; for whoever among the Muslims does not invite to good things, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong is not of the ummah that He described. You claim that all Muslims are of the ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), yet this verse has set forth that the ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) is described by inviting to good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong. So one in whom this described quality is not found—how can he be of the ummah while being contrary to what Allah has stipulated for the ummah and described it by?” [Quran 3:104 — M. H. Shakir: And from among you there should be a party who invite to good and enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong, and these are they who are the successful.]

99-/1880 - 4- Abu ‘Ali al-Tabrisi: It is narrated from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “And let there be among you Imams,” [interpreting it as], “And you were the best of Imams brought forth for mankind.” [Quran 3:104 — M. H. Shakir: And from among you there should be a party who invite to good and enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong, and these are they who are the successful. Quran 3:110 — M. H. 99-/1881 - 1- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Safwan ibn Yahya, from Abu al-Jarud, from ‘Imran ibn Haytham, from Malik ibn Dhamrah, from Abu Dharr (may Allah have mercy on him), who said: When this verse was revealed: On the day when some faces shall turn white and some faces shall turn black, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: “My ummah will come to me on the Day of Resurrection under five banners. A banner will be with the Calf of this ummah; I will ask them: What did you do with the Two Weighty Things after me? They will say: As for the greater, we altered it and threw it behind our backs; and as for the lesser, we opposed it, hated it, and wronged it. I will say: Return to the Fire, thirsty and parched, with your faces blackened. Then a banner will come to me with the Pharaoh of this ummah; I will say to them: What did you do with the Two Weighty Things after me? They will say: As for the greater, we altered it, tore it apart, and opposed it; and as for the lesser, we opposed it and fought it. I will say: Return to the Fire, thirsty and parched, with your faces blackened. Then a banner will come to me with the Samaritan of this ummah; I will say to them: What did you do with the Two Weighty Things after me? They will say: As for the greater, we disobeyed it and abandoned it; and as for the lesser, we forsook it and neglected it [and we did every ugly thing to it]. I will say: Return to the Fire, thirsty and parched, with your faces blackened. Then the banner of Dhu’l-Thudayyah will come to me with the first and last of the Khawarij; I will ask them: What did you do with the Two Weighty Things after me? They will say: As for the greater, we tore it and disassociated ourselves from it; and as for the lesser, we fought it and killed it. I will say: Return to the Fire [1], thirsty and parched, with your faces blackened. Then a banner will come to me with the Imam of the Godwary, the Chief of the Executors [2], the Leader of the bright, white-limbed ones, and the Executor (wasiyy) of the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds. I will say to them: What did you do with the Two Weighty Things after me? They will say: As for the greater, we followed it and obeyed it; and as for the lesser, we loved it, showed loyalty to it, supported it, and aided it until our blood was poured out in its cause. I will say: Return to the Garden, satiated and well-watered, with your faces whitened.” Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) recited: On the day when some faces shall turn white and some faces shall turn black; then as to those whose faces turn black: Did you disbelieve after your believing? Taste then the chastisement because you disbelieved. And as to those whose faces turn white, they shall be in Allah’s mercy; in it they shall abide. [Quran 3:106-107 — M. H. Shakir]
[Quran 3:110 — M. H. Shakir: You are the best nation raised up for men; you enjoin good and forbid evil and you believe in Allah.]
