Yusuf Ayah 83-101
99-/5330
English: We return to the narration of ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: He said: They gathered to Yūsuf while their skins were dripping with yellow blood, and they were disputing with him about his detaining [Binyāmīn]—for the children of Ya‘qūb, when they became angry, hair would bristle out through their garments and yellow blood would drip from their heads—while they were saying: O ‘Azīz, he has a father, an old man advanced in years, so take one of us in his place; indeed we see you to be of the doers of good; so release this one. When Yūsuf saw that, he said: I seek refuge with Allah that we should take anyone except him with whom we found our property, and he did not say “except the one who stole our property”: for then we would indeed be unjust. When they despaired of him and intended to depart to their father, Lāwī b. Ya‘qūb said to them: Do you not know that your father took from you a solemn covenant before Allah regarding this, and before that you fell short in the case of Yūsuf? Return you to your father; as for me, I will not return to him until my father permits me or Allah judges for me, and He is the best of judges. Then he said to them: Return to your father and say: O our father, your son has stolen, and we did not bear witness except to what we knew, and we were not guardians of the unseen. And ask the town in which we were and the caravan in which we came—that is, the people of the town and the people of the caravan—and indeed we are truthful.
He said: So the brothers of Yūsuf returned to their father, and Yehūdhā (Judah) remained behind. He entered to Yūsuf and spoke with him until the words escalated between him and Yūsuf and he became angry. There was a hair on Yehūdhā’s shoulder; the hair stood up and began to spurt blood, and he would not calm down until one of the children of Ya‘qūb touched him. He said: And before Yūsuf there was his little son, in his hand a golden pomegranate, playing with it. When Yūsuf saw that Yehūdhā had grown angry and the hair had stood spurting blood, he took the pomegranate from the boy and rolled it toward Yehūdhā. The boy followed it to take it, and his hand fell upon Yehūdhā, so his anger subsided. He said: Yehūdhā became suspicious, and the boy returned with the pomegranate to Yūsuf. Then the words escalated between them until Yehūdhā became angry and the hair stood spurting blood. When Yūsuf saw that, he rolled the pomegranate toward Yehūdhā; the boy followed it to take it, and his hand fell upon Yehūdhā, so his anger subsided. He said: Surely in the house there is someone from the progeny of Ya‘qūb—until this was done three times.
Qur’anic citations in the narration:
(Yūsuf 12:78). M. H. Shakir: O chief! he has a father, a very old man, therefore retain one of us in his stead; surely we see you to be of the doers of good.
(Yūsuf 12:79). M. H. Shakir: He said: I seek refuge with Allah that we should seize other than him with whom we found our property; for then most surely we would be unjust.
(Yūsuf 12:80). M. H. Shakir: Do you not know that your father took from you a solemn covenant by Allah, and before this you fell short in the case of Yusuf?
(Yūsuf 12:80). M. H. Shakir: So I will by no means depart from this land until my father permits me or Allah decides for me, and He is the best of the judges.
(Yūsuf 12:81). M. H. Shakir: O our father! most surely your son has committed theft, and we do not bear witness except to what we know, and we were not guardians of the unseen.
(Yūsuf 12:82). M. H. Shakir: And ask in the town in which we were, and the caravan with which we proceeded, and surely we are truthful.

English: Ya‘qūb said: Nay, your souls have made a matter light for you; so patience is most fitting. Maybe Allah will bring them all to me. Surely He is the Knowing, the Wise. Then he turned away from them and said: O my sorrow for Yūsuf; and his eyes turned white from grief—meaning they were blinded from crying—and he was suppressing [his grief], that is, sorrowful; and asaf is the most intense sorrow. Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) was asked: To what extent was Ya‘qūb’s grief over Yūsuf? He said: “The grief of seventy bereaved mothers for their children.” And he said: “Ya‘qūb did not know to say ‘Innā lillāh wa innā ilayhi rāji‘ūn (we belong to Allah and to Him we return),’ and from this he said: ‘O my sorrow for Yūsuf.’ So they said to him: By Allah, you will not cease remembering Yūsuf—meaning you will not stop mentioning Yūsuf—until you are a wasted ruin or you are of those who perish. He said: I only complain of my anguish and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know.”
Qur’anic citations:
(Yūsuf 12:83). M. H. Shakir: Nay, your souls have made a matter light for you; so patience is good; maybe Allah will bring them all together to me; surely He is the Knowing, the Wise.
(Yūsuf 12:84). M. H. Shakir: O my sorrow on Yusuf! and his eyes became white on account of the grief, and he was a repressor (of anger).
(Yūsuf 12:85). M. H. Shakir: By Allah! you will not cease to remember Yusuf until you are a prey to constant disease or until you are of those who perish.
(Yūsuf 12:86). M. H. Shakir: I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah, and I know from Allah what you do not know.

English: Al-Husayn b. Sa‘īd, in his book al-Tamḥīṣ, from Jābir: I said to Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him): What is “beautiful patience”? He said: “It is that patience in which there is no complaint to any of the people. Ibrāhīm sent Ya‘qūb to a monk, a devoted worshipper, for a need. When the monk saw him, he thought he was Ibrāhīm, so he leaped to him and embraced him, then said to him: ‘Welcome, O Friend of the All-Merciful.’ Ya‘qūb said to him: ‘I am not the Friend of the All-Merciful, but [I am] Ya‘qūb son of Isḥāq son of Ibrāhīm.’ The monk said to him: ‘What has brought you to the old age I see upon you?’ He said: ‘Worry, sorrow, and illness.’ He had not yet passed the threshold of the door before Allah revealed to him: ‘O Ya‘qūb, you have complained about Me to the servants.’ So he fell prostrate at the threshold, saying: ‘My Lord, I will not do it again.’ Allah revealed to him: ‘I have forgiven you, so do not return to the like of it.’ After that he did not complain about anything that befell him of the calamities of the world, except that one day he said: ‘I only complain of my anguish and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah what you do not know.’”

English: Ibn Bābawayh said: Muhammad b. ‘Alī Mājīlawaih (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, he said: Muhammad b. Yaḥyā al-‘Aṭṭār narrated to us, from al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥasan b. Abān, from Muḥammad b. Ūramah, from Aḥmad b. al-Ḥasan al-Mīthamī, from al-Ḥasan al-Wāsiṭī, from Hishām b. Sālim, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him). He said: “A Bedouin came to Yūsuf (peace be upon him) to buy food from him, and he sold it to him. When he finished, Yūsuf (peace be upon him) said to him: ‘Where is your dwelling?’ He said to him: ‘In such-and-such a place.’ He said to him: ‘When you pass through such-and-such a valley, stand and call out: O Ya‘qūb, O Ya‘qūb. A great, handsome, good-looking man will come out to you. Say to him: I met a man in Egypt and he conveys his salām to you, and he says to you: Your trust with Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will not be lost.’” He said: “The Bedouin went until he reached the place, and said to his servants: Guard the camels for me; then he called out: O Ya‘qūb, O Ya‘qūb. A tall, burly, handsome blind man came out to him, feeling his way along the wall with his hand until he approached. The man said to him: ‘Are you Ya‘qūb?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He conveyed to him what Yūsuf said. He fell unconscious, then when he revived he said to the Bedouin: ‘O Bedouin, do you have a need from Allah, Mighty and Majestic?’ He said to him: ‘Yes. I am a man of much wealth, and I have a cousin from whom I have no children; I would like you to supplicate Allah to grant me a child.’ So Ya‘qūb performed wuḍū’, prayed two rak‘ahs, then supplicated Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and he was granted four pregnancies—or he said six pregnancies—with two [children] in each.” Ya‘qūb (peace be upon him) knew that Yūsuf (peace be upon him) was alive and had not died, and that Allah, exalted be His mention, would bring him forth to him after his absence. He would say to his sons: “I know from Allah that which you do not know.” But his sons and his family and his relatives would rebuke him for mentioning Yūsuf—until, when he perceived the scent of Yūsuf, he said: “Indeed I perceive the scent of Yūsuf, were it not that you think me doting.” They said: “By Allah, you are most surely in your old error.” Then, when the bearer of good tidings—his son Yehūdhā—arrived, he cast Yūsuf’s shirt upon his face, and he returned seeing. He said: “Did I not say to you that I know from Allah what you do not know?”
