Ibrahim Ayah 27
99-/5725 (Tafsīr al-‘Ayyāshī 2:13/224)
Al-Halabī said: Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) was asked about a man who vowed to Allah that he would fast for a ḥīn in gratitude.
He replied: “’Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him) was asked about this and said: Let him fast six months, for Allah says: ‘It brings forth its fruit at all times by the permission of its Lord,’ and a ḥīn is six months.”
99-/5726 (Tafsīr al-‘Ayyāshī 2:14/224)
From Khālid ibn Jarīr who said: Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) was asked about a man who said: “I owe to Allah that I will fast for a ḥīn,” in gratitude.
Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “A similar question was brought to ‘Alī (peace be upon him), and he said: Fast six months, for Allah says: ‘It brings forth its fruit at all times’—meaning six months.”

Qur’an 14:27 (M. H. Shakir)
Allah confirms those who believe with the sure word in this world’s life and in the hereafter, and Allah causes the unjust to go astray, and Allah does what He pleases.

99-/5727 (al-Kāfī 3:10/28)
Muḥammad ibn Ya‘qūb, from several of our companions, from Sahl ibn Ziyād, from ‘Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Najrān, from ‘Āṣim ibn Ḥumayd, from Abū Baṣīr, said: I heard Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) say: “When a man is placed in his grave, two angels come to him, an angel on his right and an angel on his left, and Satan is stationed between his eyes, his eyes of copper. He is asked: How do you say regarding the man who was among you? He is seized with a fright; if he is a believer, he says: Are you asking me about Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family)? They say to him: Sleep a sleep in which there is no dream; his grave is expanded for him nine cubits, and he sees his seat in Paradise. This is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Allah confirms those who believe with the sure word in this world’s life and in the hereafter.’ But if he is an unbeliever, they say to him: Who is this man who came forth among you? He says: I do not know. Then they leave him to Satan.”
This ḥadīth was also narrated by al-Ḥusayn ibn Sa‘īd in his Kitāb al-Zuhd: He said: al-Naḍr ibn Suwayd narrated to us, from ‘Āṣim ibn Ḥumayd, from Abū Baṣīr, who said: I heard Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) say: “When a man is placed in his grave…” and he continued the ḥadīth to its end. [1]

99-/5728 (al-Kāfī 3:12/239)
And from him: from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Īsā, from al-Ḥusayn ibn Sa‘īd, from al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad, from ‘Alī ibn Abī Ḥamzah, from Abū Baṣīr, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: “When the believer is taken out from his house, the angels escort him to his grave, crowding around him. When he is brought to his grave, the earth says to him: ‘Welcome and greetings! By Allah, I used to love that one like you should walk upon me; you shall surely see what I will do with you.’ His grave is expanded for him as far as his sight, and into his grave enter the two angels of the grave—Munkar and Nakīr, the two who sit in the grave—so they cast the soul into him up to his hips [1], then they seat him and question him. They say to him: Who is your Lord? He says: Allah. They say: What is your religion? He says: Islam. They say: And who is your Prophet? He says: Muḥammad (may Allah bless him and his family). They say: And who is your Imām? He says: So-and-so.” He said: “Then a caller calls out from the heaven: ‘My servant has spoken the truth. Furnish his grave from Paradise, open for him in his grave a gate to Paradise, and clothe him from the garments of Paradise, until he comes to Us, and what is with Us is better for him.’ Then it is said to him: Sleep the sleep of the bride; there is no dream therein.
And if he is an unbeliever, the angels go out escorting him to his grave, cursing him, until when he is brought to his grave, the earth says to him: ‘No welcome and no greeting! By Allah, I used to hate that one like you should walk upon me; surely you shall see what I will do to you today.’ It constricts upon him until his ribs meet.” He said: “Then the two angels of the grave enter upon him—Munkar and Nakīr, the two who sit in the grave.”
Abū Baṣīr said: I said: May I be your ransom, do they enter upon the believer and the unbeliever in one form? He said: “No.”
He said: “They seat him and cast the soul into him up to his hips, then they say to him: Who is your Lord? He stammers and says: I heard the people saying. They say to him: You did not know. And they say to him: What is your religion? He stammers; they say to him: You did not know. And they say to him: Who is your Prophet? He says: I heard the people saying. They say to him: You did not know. And they ask him about the Imām of his time.” He said: “Then a caller calls out from the heaven: ‘My servant has lied. Furnish his grave from the Fire, clothe him from the garments of the Fire, and open for him a gate to the Fire until he comes to Us, and what is with Us is worse for him.’ Then they strike him with a heavy hammer [2] three blows; with none of those blows but that his grave bursts aflame. If the mountains of Tihāmah were struck with that hammer, they would become dust.”
Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “And Allah sets upon him in his grave snakes that bite him biting, and Satan that distresses him with distress; and his punishment is heard by all whom Allah created except the jinn and humankind; and indeed he hears the sound of their sandals and the shaking of their hands. This is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Allah confirms those who believe with the sure word in this world’s life and in the hereafter, and Allah causes the unjust to go astray, and Allah does what He pleases.’”

99-/5729 (al-Kāfī 3:1/231)
And from him: from ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm, from his father, from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthmān, and a number of our companions, from Sahl ibn Ziyād, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Naṣr and al-Ḥasan ibn ‘Alī together, from Abū Jamīlah Mufaḍḍal ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Jābir, from ‘Abd al-A‘lā; and ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm, from Muḥammad ibn ‘Īsā, from Yūnus, from Ibrāhīm ibn ‘Abd al-A‘lā, from Suwayd ibn Ghafalah, said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “When the son of Ādam is on the last day of the days of this world and the first day of the days of the Hereafter, his wealth, his children, and his deeds are presented to him. He turns to his wealth and says: By Allah, I was greedy and miserly over you; what do I have with you? It says: Take your shroud from me. Then he turns to his children and says: By Allah, I loved you and I defended you; what do I have with you? They say: We will convey you to your pit and cover you in it. Then he turns to his deeds and says: By Allah, I was disinclined toward you, though you were heavy upon me; what do I have with you? It says: I am your companion in your grave and on your day of resurrection until I and you are presented before your Lord.”
He said: “If he was a friend of Allah, there comes to him the most pleasant of people in fragrance, the best in appearance, and the finest in attire [1]. He says: Rejoice in rest and sweet herbs and a Garden of Bliss; your arrival is a good arrival. He says to him: Who are you? He says: I am your righteous deed; depart from the world to Paradise. He recognizes his washer and implores his bearer to hasten. When he is placed in his grave, the two angels of the grave come to him, dragging their hair and furrowing [2] the earth with their feet; their voices are like crashing thunder [3], and their eyes like flashing lightning. They say to him: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? And who is your Prophet? He says: Allah is my Lord, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muḥammad (may Allah bless him and his family). They say to him: May Allah make you firm in what you love and are pleased with.
And it is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Allah confirms those who believe with the sure word in this world’s life and in the hereafter.’ Then they expand for him his grave as far as his sight, then they open for him a gate to Paradise, then they say to him: Sleep with a cool eye, the sleep of a pampered youth, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘The companions of the garden shall on that day be in a better abiding-place and a better resting-place.’ [4]”
He said: “And if he was an enemy to his Lord, there comes to him the ugliest of Allah’s creation in dress and appearance, and the foulest in smell; he says to him: Rejoice in a hospitality of boiling water and the burning of a blazing fire. He recognizes his washer and implores his bearers to delay him. When he is placed in the grave, the examiners of the grave come to him, removing his shrouds, then they say to him: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet? He says: I do not know. They say: You did not know, nor were you guided. Then they strike his crown with a hammer they have, a strike such that no creature Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has created but that it is terrified by it, except the two weighty ones (humans and jinn). Then they open for him a gate to the Fire and say to him: Sleep in the worst state, in a constriction like that of the shaft of a spear [5] around the metal tip [6], until indeed his brain oozes from between his nail and his flesh. Allah unleashes upon him the snakes of the earth, its scorpions, and its crawling things; they bite him until Allah resurrects him from his grave, and he will long for the Hour to be established because of the evil he is in.”
And Jābir said: Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “The Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said: I used to look at the camels and the sheep while I herded them—there was no prophet but that he pastured sheep—and I used to look at them before prophethood while they were settled in their resting place [7], with nothing around them to agitate them, until they would be startled and flee. I would say: What is this? and be amazed—until Gabriel (peace be upon him) informed me that the unbeliever is struck a blow such that nothing Allah has created but hears it and is terrified by it, except the two weighty ones (humans and jinn). I said: That is because of the unbeliever’s blow. So we seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave.”

From Zurārah, Ḥumrān, and Muḥammad ibn Muslim, from Abū Ja‘far and Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon them both), they said: “When a man is placed in his grave, two angels come to him, one on his right and one on his left, and Satan is positioned before him, his eyes of copper. He is asked: What do you say about this man who came forth among you, claiming that he is the Messenger of Allah? He is seized with a fright, and says—if he is a believer—: Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah. It is said to him then: Sleep a sleep without dream; his grave is expanded for him nine cubits and he sees his seat in Paradise. This is the saying of Allah: ‘Allah confirms those who believe with the sure word in this world’s life and in the hereafter.’ And if he is an unbeliever, they say: Who is this man who was among you, claiming he is the Messenger of Allah? He says: I do not know. Then he is left to Satan.”

99-/5733 (Tafsīr al-‘Ayyāshī 2:18/225; Tafsīr al-Qummī 1:369; al-Amālī 1:357)
From Abū Baṣīr, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him): “When the deceased is taken out from his house, the angels escort him to his grave, praying mercy for him. When he is brought to his grave, the earth says to him: ‘Welcome and ease! By Allah, I used to love that one like you should walk upon me; you shall surely see what I will do to you.’ Then his grave is expanded for him as far as his sight, and into his grave enter the two who sit in the grave, Munkar and Nakīr. They cast the soul into him up to his hips, then seat him and question him: Who is your Lord? He says: Allah. They say: What is your religion? He says: Islam. They say: Who is your Prophet? He says: Muḥammad (may Allah bless him and his family). They say: Who is your Imām? He says: ‘Alī. A caller calls out from the heaven: ‘My servant has spoken the truth. Furnish his grave from Paradise, clothe him from the garments of Paradise, and open for him a gate to Paradise, until he comes to Us, and what is with Us is better for him.’ Then they say to him: Sleep the sleep of the bride, sleep a sleep with no dream in it.
And if he is an unbeliever, angels go out for him, escorting him to his grave while cursing him. When he reaches the earth, the earth says: ‘No welcome and no greeting! By Allah, I used to hate that one like you should walk upon me; surely you shall see what I will do to you today.’ Then it constricts him until his ribs meet. The two angels of the grave enter upon him, Munkar and Nakīr—the two who sit in the grave.” He said: I said to him: May I be your ransom, do they enter upon the believer and the unbeliever in one form? He said: “No.” “They seat him and say: Who is your Lord? He says: I heard the people saying… [They say: You did not know. What is your religion? He says: I heard the people saying.] and his tongue falters. They say: You did not know. Who is your Prophet? He says: I heard the people saying, and his tongue falters. They say: You did not know. Then a caller calls out from the heaven: ‘My servant has lied. Furnish his grave from the Fire, clothe him from the garments of the Fire, and open for him a gate to the Fire, until he comes to Us, and what he has with Us is worse for him.’” He said: “Then they strike him with a heavy hammer that they have, three blows; there is not one blow but that his grave bursts into flame; if that blow were struck upon the mountains of Tihāmah, they would be reduced to dust.”
Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “Allah sets upon him in his grave the snakes and the scorpions to bite him biting, and the devils to distress him with distress; his punishment is heard by all whom Allah created except the jinn and humankind; and indeed he hears the sound of their sandals and the shaking of their hands. This is the saying of Allah: ‘Allah confirms those who believe with the sure word in this world’s life’—he said: at his death—‘and in the hereafter’—he said: in his grave—‘and Allah causes the unjust to go astray, and Allah does what He pleases.’”

From Suwayd ibn Ghafalah, from ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him), who said: “When the son of Ādam is on the last day of the world and the first day of the Hereafter, his wealth, his children, and his deeds are presented to him…” [The narration continues exactly as above, concluding with the Prophet’s statement and seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave.]
Qur’an 25:24 (M. H. Shakir)

99-/5735 (Tafsīr al-‘Ayyāshī 2:19/227)
From Muḥammad ibn Muslim, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “When a man is placed in his grave, two angels come to him: one on his right and one on his left, and Satan is set before him, his eyes of copper. He is asked: What do you say about this man who came forth among you? He is frightened by that, and says—if he is a believer—: Are you asking me about Muḥammad? They say to him then: Sleep a sleep without dream; and his grave is expanded for him nine [3] cubits, and he sees his seat in Paradise. And if he is an unbeliever, it is said to him: What do you say about this man who came forth among you? He says: I do not know; then he is left to Satan, and he is struck with an iron hammer whose sound every thing hears. This is the saying of Allah: ‘Allah confirms those who believe with the sure word in this world’s life and in the hereafter; and Allah causes the unjust to go astray, and Allah does what He pleases.’”

Ibn Bābawayh said: We were narrated by ‘Alī ibn ‘Abd Allāh al-Warrāq, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Sinānī, and ‘Alī ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Imrān al-Daqqāq (may Allah have mercy on him): They said: Abū al-‘Abbās Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā al-Qaṭṭān narrated to us, who said: Bakr ibn ‘Abd Allāh ibn Ḥabīb narrated to us, who said: Tamīm ibn Buhlūl, from his father, from Ja‘far ibn Sulaymān al-Baṣrī, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn al-Faḍl al-Hāshimī, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abd Allāh Ja‘far ibn Muḥammad (peace be upon them) about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Whomsoever Allah guides, he is the rightly guided, and whom He causes to err, you shall not find for him any friend to lead aright.’ [1]
He said: “Indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted, averts the wrongdoers on the Day of Resurrection from His abode of honor, and He guides the people of faith and righteous deed to His Garden, as He, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘And Allah causes the unjust to go astray, and Allah does what He pleases,’ and He, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Surely (as for) those who believe and do good, their Lord will guide them by their faith; rivers will flow beneath them in gardens of bliss.’ [2]”
