S 56 Ayat 56 to 70

قوله تعالى:

هٰذٰا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدِّينِ -إلى قوله تعالى- لَوْ نَشٰاءُ جَعَلْنٰاهُ أُجٰاجاً [56-70]

[56] This is their entertainment on the day of requital. [57] We created you, why do you not then assent? [58] Have you considered the seed? [59] Is it you that create it or are We the creators? [60] We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, [61] In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. [62] And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? [63] Have you considered what you sow? [64] Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? [65] If We pleased, We should have certainly made it chaff, then would you lament: [66] Surely we are burdened with debt: [67] Nay! we are deprived. [68] Have you considered the water which you drink? [69] Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? [70] If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? — [Qur'an, Surah Al-Waqi'ah (56), verses 56–70, M.H. Shakir translation]

99-/10429 Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Hisham ibn Salim, from Abu Hamzah, said: I heard ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them) say: "All wonder—truly all wonder—is for the one who denies death while he sees people dying every day and night. And the greatest wonder is for the one who denies the second creation (resurrection), while he sees the first creation before his very eyes."

‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm: Regarding His saying: “This is their entertainment on the day of judgment” [56], he said: this is their reward on the Day of Recompense. And His saying: “Have you considered the seed that you emit?” [58], that is, the drop of sperm. “Is it you that create it, or are We the creators?” [59] — up to His saying “broken pieces” — we did not affirm it.

Regarding His saying: “Have you considered the water which you drink?” [68], “Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders?” [69], he said: from the clouds. “If We pleased, We would have made it saltish” [70] — that is, salty and extremely bitter.

And it has already been mentioned: “al-Ujāj” means bitter.

In the narration of Abū al-Jārūd, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, the Exalted: “and this [water] is salty and bitter” from Sūrat al-Malā’ikah.

Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb: From ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ibn Abī ʿUmayr, from Ibn Udhaynah, from Ibn Bukayr, he said: Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him) said:

“When you intend to plant a crop, take a handful of seeds, face the qiblah, and say:

“Have you considered what you sow?” [56:63] “Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the growers?” [56:64] — three times.

Then say: Rather, Allah is the grower — three times.

Then say: O Allah, make it a blessed grain, and grant us safety in it.

Then scatter the handful you have in your hand over the cleared ground.”

And from him: from a number of our companions, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Khālid, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥakam, from Shuʿayb al-ʿAqarqūfī, from Abū ʿAbdillāh (peace be upon him), he said to me:

“When you sow, say: O Allah, I have sown, and You are the One who causes to grow, so make it a blessed grain.”
