An-Nahl Ayah 8-15

Translation: Prayer—and in the Hajj here there is prayer—but in your prayer there is not Hajj. Do not neglect the Hajj while you are able to perform it. Do you not see that in it your hair becomes disheveled, your skin becomes rough, and you are restrained from looking at women? Here we are, near at hand, and we have connected sources of water, yet we do not reach the Hajj except with hardship—so how then are you who are far away in distant lands? No king and no commoner reaches the Hajj except with hardship: from a change of food or drink, or wind, or sun that one cannot repel. And that is the saying of Allah: “And they carry your heavy loads to a land which you could not have reached except with distress of the souls; surely your Lord is Compassionate, Merciful.”

Translation (M. H. Shakir): And they carry your heavy loads to regions which you could not reach but with distress of the souls; most surely your Lord is Compassionate, Merciful.

Translation: His saying, the Exalted: “And (He created) the horses and the mules and the asses that you might ride upon them and for ornament…” up to His saying: “And He has cast down firm mountains in the earth lest it might be convulsed with you, and rivers and roads that you may go aright.” [16:8, 15]

Translation (M. H. Shakir): And (He created) the horses and the mules and the asses that you might ride upon them and for ornament; and He creates what you do not know.

Translation (M. H. Shakir): And He has cast down firm mountains in the earth lest it might be convulsed with you, and rivers and roads that you may go aright.

99-/5977 _3- Translation: ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm, on the meaning of the verse, said: To Mecca and Medina and all towns.

99-/5978 _1- Translation: Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Zurārah, from one of the two (peace be upon them). He said: I asked him about the urine of horses, mules, and donkeys. He disliked it. I said: Is not their meat lawful? He said: Has not Allah made clear to you: “And the cattle—He created them for you; in them is warmth and (other) uses, and of them you eat” [1]; and He said regarding the horses, mules, and donkeys: “That you might ride upon them and for ornament.” So He made for eating the cattle which Allah described in the Book, and He made for riding the horses, mules, and donkeys. Their meat is not forbidden, but people find it repulsive.

99-/5979 _2- Translation: Al-Shaykh in (al-Tahdhīb), with his chain from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad, from Muḥammad ibn Khālid, from al-Qāsim ibn ‘Urwah, from Ibn Bukayr, from Zurārah, from one of the two (peace be upon them), regarding the urine of beasts of burden that gets on a garment: he disliked it. I said: Is not their meat lawful? He said: Yes, but it is not among what Allah has designated for eating.

99-/5980 _4- Translation: ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm said: “And (He created) the horses, the mules, and the asses that you might ride upon them”—and He, Mighty and Majestic, did not say “that you might ride them and eat them,” as He said regarding the cattle. “And He creates what you do not know”—that is, the marvels which Allah has created on land and sea. “And upon Allah is the direction of the way, and some of them are deviant” means the path [2]. And His saying: “He it is Who sends down water from the cloud; from it is drink for you, and by it (grows) herbage…”

Translation: “Therewith you pasture (your cattle)”—that is, you cultivate. And His saying: “Therewith He causes to grow for you the crops and the olive and the date-palms and the grapes and of all the fruits”—meaning by the rain: “Most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect.”

Translation: Then he said: His saying, the Exalted, “And what He has multiplied for you in the earth”—that is, He created and brought forth—“varied in its hues; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who are mindful.” His saying: “And He it is Who has made the sea subservient, that you may eat from it fresh flesh and bring forth from it ornaments which you wear”—that is, what comes out of the sea of various jewels. “And you see the ships cleaving through it”—that is, the vessels. He said: And His saying: “And He has cast down firm mountains in the earth lest it might be convulsed with you”—that is, the mountains—“and rivers and roads”—that is, paths—“that you may go aright,” meaning so that you may be guided.
