Qur’anic reference: Hud 11:36-49
Shakir:
36. And it was revealed to Nuh: None of your people will believe except those who have already believed, therefore be not distressed by what they do.
37. And make the ark before Our eyes and (according to) Our revelation, and do not speak to Me in respect of those who are unjust; surely they shall be drowned.
38. And he began to make the ark; and whenever the chiefs from among his people passed by him they laughed at him. He said: If you laugh at us, surely we too laugh at you as you laugh (at us).
39. So shall you know who it is on whom will come a chastisement which will disgrace him, and on whom will lasting chastisement come down.
40. Until when Our command came and water gushed forth from the oven, We said: Carry in it two of all things, a pair, and your own family—except those against whom the word has already gone forth—and those who believe; and there believed not with him but a few.
41. And he said: Embark in it; in the name of Allah be its sailing and its anchoring; most surely my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.
42. And it moved on with them amid waves like mountains, and Nuh called out to his son, and he was aloof: O my son! embark with us and be not with the unbelievers.
43. He said: I will betake myself for refuge to a mountain that shall protect me from the water. Nuh said: There is no protector today from Allah’s chastisement but He on whom He has mercy; and a wave intervened between them, so he was of the drowned.
44. And it was said: O earth! swallow down your water, and O cloud! cease. And the water was made to abate and the affair was decided, and the ark rested on the Judi, and it was said: Away with the unjust people!
45. And Nuh called upon his Lord and said: My Lord! surely my son is of my family, and Thy promise is surely true, and Thou art the most just of the judges.
46. He said: O Nuh! surely he is not of your family; surely he is (the doer of) other than good deeds, therefore ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge; surely I admonish you lest you may be of the ignorant.
47. He said: My Lord! I seek refuge in Thee from asking Thee that of which I have no knowledge; and unless Thou forgive me and have mercy on me I shall be of the losers.
48. It was said: O Nuh! descend with peace from Us and blessings on you and on the nations (springing) from those with you; and (as for) other nations, We will grant them provisions, then there shall afflict them from Us a painful chastisement.
49. These are announcements relating to the unseen which We reveal to you; you did not know them, (neither) you nor your people, before this; therefore be patient; surely the (good) end is for those who guard (against evil).

I said to him: For what reason did Allah, Mighty and Majestic, drown the entire world in the time of Nuh (peace be upon him), when among them were children and those without sin? He said: “There were no children among them, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, made the loins of the people of Nuh barren and the wombs of their women for forty years, so their progeny was cut off; then they were drowned with no child among them. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, would not destroy by His punishment one who has no sin. As for the remainder of the people of Nuh (peace be upon him), they were drowned for belieding the Prophet of Allah, Nuh (peace be upon him), and the rest were drowned due to their being pleased with the denial of the deniers; and whoever is absent from a matter yet is pleased with it, is like the one who witnessed it and did it.”

Translation: And from him: from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Mahbub, from Hisham al-Khurasani, from al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar, who said: I was with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) in Kufa during the days he came to Abu al-‘Abbas, and when we reached the Kunasah he said: “Here my uncle Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) was crucified.” Then he proceeded until he reached the Oil-Merchants’ Arch, the last of the Lamp-Makers, and he dismounted and said: “Dismount, for this place was the first mosque of Kufa which Adam (peace be upon him) traced out, and I dislike to enter it mounted.” I said: Who altered it from its plan? He said: “The first of that was the Flood in the time of Nuh (peace be upon him), then the Companions of Kisra and al-Nu‘man [1] altered it, then later Ziyad ibn Abi Sufyan altered it.” I said: Was Kufa and its mosque in the time of Nuh (peace be upon him)? He said: “Yes, O Mufaddal; Nuh’s dwelling and his people were in a village upon the bank of the Euphrates on the west side of Kufa. Nuh (peace be upon him) was a carpenter, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, made him a prophet and chose him. Nuh (peace be upon him) was the first to make a ship that travels upon the surface of water. And Nuh (peace be upon him) remained among his people a thousand years less fifty, calling them to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and they mocked him. When he saw that from them, he supplicated against them, saying: ‘My Lord! leave not upon the land a single dweller from among the unbelievers. Surely if You leave them, they will lead Your servants astray, and will not beget any but immoral, ungrateful ones’ [2]. So Allah revealed to Nuh to make a ship and make it spacious and hasten its construction; so Nuh made a ship in the Mosque of Kufa with his own hand, bringing wood from afar until he finished it.” Al-Mufaddal said: Then the speech of Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) ceased at the time of the sun’s zenith; he stood and prayed Zuhr and ‘Asr, then left the mosque, turned to his left and gestured with his hand to the place of the Darriyyin [3]—the place of Ibn Hakim’s house, which is the Euphrates today—and said: “O Mufaddal, here were set up the idols of the people of Nuh (peace be upon him): Yaghuth, Ya‘uq and Nasr.” Then he went on until he mounted his animal. I said: May I be your ransom, in how long did Nuh make his ship until he finished it? He said: “In two cycles.” I said: And how long are two cycles? He said: “Eighty years.” I said: But the common folk say he made it in five hundred years. He said: “No; how so, when Allah says: ‘and Our revelation’?” I said: Inform me about Allah’s saying: “Until when Our command came and the oven gushed forth,” where was its place and how was it? He said: “The oven was in the house of an old believing woman, behind the qibla on the right of the mosque.” I said: Where is that? He said: “The place of the corner of Bab al-Fil today.” Then I said: Was the beginning of the water’s coming out from that oven? He said: “Yes. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, loved to show Nuh’s people a sign. Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent upon them rain pouring copiously, and the Euphrates overflowed, and all the springs overflowed, so Allah drowned them and saved Nuh and those with him in the ship.” I said to him: How long did Nuh remain in the ship until the water subsided and he disembarked from it? He said: “He remained in it seven days and nights; it circumambulated the House for a week, then settled on al-Judi, which is the Euphrates of Kufa.” I said: Is the Mosque of Kufa ancient? He said: “Yes, and it is the place of prayer of the prophets. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prayed in it when he was taken by night to the heaven; Gabriel (peace be upon him) said to him: O Muhammad, this is the mosque of your father Adam and the place of prayer of the prophets, so dismount and pray in it. So the Messenger of Allah dismounted and prayed in it, then Gabriel ascended with him to heaven.”

Translation: And from him: from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Nasr, from Aban ibn ‘Uthman, from Abu Hamzah al-Thumali, from Abu Razin al-Asadi, from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), that he said: “When Nuh (may Allah bless him) finished the ship, and the sign between him and his Lord for the destruction of his people was that the oven should gush forth—so the oven gushed forth in his wife’s house—she said: The oven has gushed forth. He stood and sealed it; the water stood still, and he admitted whom he wished to admit and let out whom he wished to let out. Then he came to his signet and removed it. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘So We opened the gates of the heaven with water pouring down, and We made the earth to gush forth with springs, so the waters met for a matter ordained. And We bore him on a thing made of planks and nails’ [3].” He said: “He had built it in the middle of your mosque, and (the mosque) has fallen short of its original measurement by seven hundred cubits.”
99-/5086 _9- … «جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةُ نُوحٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)وَ هُوَ يَعْمَلُ السَّفِينَةَ … فَفَارَ الْمَاءُ».
99-/5086
Translation: “…The wife of Nuh (peace be upon him) came to him while he was building the ship and said: The oven has water coming out of it. He hurried to it until he put a cover over it and sealed it with his signet, so the water stood still. When he finished the ship, he came to the signet, broke it and uncovered the cover, and the water gushed forth.”
99-/5087 _10- … «كَانَتْ شَرِيعَةَ نُوحٍ(عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ)أَنْ يُعْبَدَ اللَّهُ بِالتَّوْحِيدِ … أَنِ اصْنَعِ الْفُلْكَ » [3].
99-/5087
Translation: “…The law of Nuh (peace be upon him) was that Allah be worshipped by tawhid and sincerity and abandoning rivals—this is the fitrah upon which He created the people—and Allah took His covenant upon Nuh (peace be upon him) and upon the prophets (peace be upon them) that they worship Allah (Blessed and Exalted) and associate nothing with Him; and He commanded prayer, enjoining right and forbidding wrong, the lawful and the unlawful; and He did not impose on him the rulings of penal limits nor the obligations of inheritances. Such was his law. Nuh remained among them a thousand years minus fifty, calling them secretly and openly. When they refused and were arrogant, he said: ‘My Lord, surely I am overpowered, so help (me)’ [1]. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him: ‘None of your people will believe except those who have already believed, so be not distressed by what they do.’ For that reason Nuh (peace be upon him) said: ‘And they will not beget any but immoral, ungrateful ones’ [2]. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him: ‘Make the Ark’ [3].”

50. And to Ad (We sent) their brother Hud. He said: O my people! serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; you are nothing but forgers (of lies).
51. O my people! I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with Him Who created me; do you not then understand?
52. And, O my people! ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him; He will send on you clouds pouring down abundance of rain and add strength to your strength, and do not turn back guilty.
53. They said: O Hud! you have not brought us a clear argument, and we are not going to desert our gods for your word, and we are not believers in you.
