‘Ali b. Ibrahim, in the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) regarding “And when Allah made a covenant with those who were given the Book: You shall certainly make it known to men and you shall not hide it”: “That is because Allah took the covenant from those who were given the Book concerning Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), that they should make him known to the people when he would appear, and not conceal him. But they threw it behind their backs—meaning: they cast Allah’s covenant behind their backs—and they sold it for a small price; and evil is that for which they sell.” (Al ‘Imran 3:187–188; for 3:187 see Shakir above; for 3:188 see Shakir below.)

And he said: His, the Exalted’s, saying: “Think not that those who exult in what they have done and love to be praised for what they have not done”—it was revealed concerning the hypocrites who love to be praised for what they did not do. “Therefore think not them to be in safety from the chastisement, and for them is a painful chastisement.” (Al ‘Imran 3:188, M. H. Shakir).

99-/2017

And in the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His, the Exalted’s, saying: “Therefore think not them to be in safety from the chastisement—he said: at a distance from the chastisement—‘and for them is a painful chastisement.’” (Al ‘Imran 3:188, M. H. Shakir).

Ibn Babawayh said: My father (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us, who said: Sa‘d b. ‘Abdillah narrated to us, who said: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Isa narrated to us, from al-Hasan b. Mahbub, from al-‘Ala’ b. Ruzayn, from Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: “And whoever is blind in this, he shall (also) be blind in the hereafter.” [1] He said: “Whoever is not led—by the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the revolution of the sphere, the sun, and the moon, and the wondrous signs—to the fact that beyond that there is a matter greater than it, then he will be in the Hereafter more blind and further astray in way.” He said: “Thus, regarding what he has not witnessed, he is [even] more blind and more astray.” (The verse cited: Al ‘Imran 3:190 introduces reflection; the verse explicitly quoted by reference is: Al-Isra’ 17:72, M. H. Shakir: “And whoever is blind in this, he shall (also) be blind in the hereafter; and more erring from the way.”)
