99-/Quran 3:49-50 M. H. Shakir: And (make him) an apostle to the children of Israel: That I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, that I determine for you out of dust like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird with Allah’s permission and I heal the blind and the leprous, and bring the dead to life with Allah’s permission and I inform you of what you should eat and what you should store in your houses; most surely there is a sign in this for you, if you are believers. And (I am) a verifier of that which is before me of the Taurat and that I may make lawful to you certain of that which has been forbidden to you, and I have come to you with a sign from your Lord therefore be careful of (your duty to) Allah and obey me.
99-/1703: Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding His saying, I create for you out of clay like the form of a bird, said: It means “I am able,” and it is a creation by determination.
99-/1704: Ali ibn Ibrahim said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Hamadani narrated to us, who said: Ja‘far ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to me, who said: Kathir ibn ‘Ayyash narrated to me from Ziyad ibn al-Mundhir Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far Muhammad ibn ‘Ali (peace be upon them), regarding His saying: And I inform you of what you eat and what you store up in your houses. He said: Jesus (peace be upon him) used to say to the Children of Israel: “I am the messenger of Allah to you; I create for you out of clay like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by Allah’s permission; and I heal the blind and the leper—the blind (al-akmah) is the sightless.” They said: “We see nothing but sorcery in what you do, so show us a sign by which we may know that you are truthful.” He said: “What if I inform you of what you eat and what you store up in your houses [1], meaning what you have eaten in your homes before you came out, and what you have put aside for the night—will you then know that I am truthful?” They said: “Yes.” So he would say to a man: “You ate such-and-such, and you drank such-and-such, and you put away such-and-such.” Some of them accepted from him and believed, and some denied and disbelieved; and in that there was a sign for them, if they were believers.
99-/1705: And ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding His saying: And that I may make lawful to you certain of that which has been forbidden to you: it refers to the Sabbath, the fats, and the birds that Allah had forbidden to the Children of Israel.
99-/1706: He said: Ibn Abi ‘Umayr narrated from a man, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding Allah’s saying: Then when Jesus perceived disbelief on their part [2]: “That is, when he heard and saw that they disbelieved. And the five senses that Allah has allotted in people are: hearing for sounds; sight for colors and distinguishing them; smell for recognizing pleasant and foul [3] odors; taste for flavors and distinguishing them; and touch for recognizing hot and cold, soft and rough.”

99-/Quran 3:52 M. H. Shakir: But when Isa perceived unbelief on their part, he said: Who will be my helpers in Allah’s way? The disciples said: We are helpers (in the way) of Allah: We believe in Allah and bear witness that we are submitting ones.
99-/1707: Al-‘Ayyashi: from al-Hudhali, from a man, who said: “Jesus (peace be upon him) remained until he reached seven or eight years old, then he began informing them of what they ate and what they stored in their houses. He stayed among them bringing the dead to life and healing the blind and the leper, and teaching them the Torah; and Allah sent down to them the Gospel when Allah wanted to establish the proof against them.”
99-/1708: From Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from someone he mentioned, mursal, who said: “The companions of Jesus (peace be upon him) asked him to bring a dead man to life for them. He brought them to the grave of Sam, the son of Noah, and said to him: ‘Rise by Allah’s permission, O Sam son of Noah.’ The grave split, then he repeated the words and he stirred, then he repeated the words and Sam son of Noah came out. Jesus said to him: ‘Which do you prefer: to remain or to return?’ He said: ‘O Spirit of Allah, rather I will return; I still feel the burning of death—or he said: the sting [1] of death—in my insides to this very day.’”
99-/1709: From Aban ibn Taghlib, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) was asked: Did Jesus son of Mary bring anyone to life after death such that he then had food, provision, a term of life, and children? He said: “Yes. He had a friend who was his brother in Allah. Jesus used to pass by him and stop with him. Jesus was absent from him for a time, then passed by to greet him; his mother came out to greet him. He asked her about him, and she said: ‘He has died, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said to her: ‘Would you like to see him?’ She said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Tomorrow I will come to you so that I may revive him for you by Allah’s permission.’ When it was the next day he came to her and said: ‘Come with me to his grave.’ They went until they reached his grave. Jesus (peace be upon him) stood and then supplicated Allah, and the grave split open and her son came out alive. When his mother saw him and he saw her, they wept, and Jesus (peace be upon him) had mercy on them and said to him: ‘Would you like to remain with your mother in this world?’ He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, with food and provision and a term, or without a term, provision, and food?’ Jesus said to him: ‘Rather with provision, food, and a term—you will live twenty years, marry, and have children.’ He said: ‘Then yes.’ So Jesus (peace be upon him) handed him over to his mother; he lived twenty years and had offspring.”
99-/1710: From Muhammad al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Between David and Jesus son of Mary were four hundred years. The law of Jesus was that he was sent with monotheism and sincerity, and with what Noah, Abraham, and Moses had enjoined. The Gospel was sent down to him, and the covenant was taken of him as it was taken of the prophets. It was legislated for him in the Book to establish prayer along with the religion, to enjoin good and forbid evil, to prohibit the unlawful and permit the lawful. In the Gospel there were admonitions, parables, and limits, but there was no retribution (qiṣāṣ), no rulings of penal limits, and no prescribed shares of inheritance. And there was sent down to him an easing of what had been sent down upon Moses (peace be upon him) in the Torah, and it is Allah’s saying concerning what Jesus son of Mary said to the Children of Israel: And that I may make lawful to you certain of that which has been forbidden to you; and Jesus commanded those with him from among his followers who believed to have faith in the law of the Torah and the Gospel.”

He said: “As for the people, they were called ḥawāriyyīn because they were washers who cleansed clothes of dirt by washing; and it is a name derived from the white fine bread (al-khubz al-ḥawwārā) [1]. But as for us, the disciples were called ḥawāriyyīn because they were pure (mukhliṣīn) in themselves and purifiers of others from the filth of sins by admonition and reminding.”
