99-/5157 _24- From ‘Ali b. Abi Hamzah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) regarding Allah’s saying: “Surely we are messengers of your Lord; they shall by no means reach you; so go forth with your family in a part of the night—dark” — he said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “And this is the recitation of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him).”

(Quran, Hud 11:81; translation: M. H. Shakir)

99-/5158 _25- From Maymun al-Bani, who said: I was with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) and verses from Hud were recited in his presence. When he reached, “And We rained upon it stones, of what had been decreed, in layers; marked (for punishment) with your Lord, and it is not far off from the unjust” he said: “Whoever dies persisting in sodomy will not die until Allah strikes him with a stone from those stones; his death will be by it, and no one will see it.”

(Quran, Hud 11:82-83; translation: M. H. Shakir)

99-/5159 _26- From al-Sakuni, from Abu Ja‘far, from his father (peace be upon them), who said: “The Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said: When the people of Lot did what they did, the earth wept to its Lord until its tears reached the heaven, and the heaven wept until its tears reached the Throne. So Allah revealed to the heaven: ‘Stone them,’ and He revealed to the earth: ‘Swallow them up.’”

99-/5160 _27- Ibn Babawayh, with his chain from Abu Basir, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Lot’s (peace be upon him) words to his people, ‘If only I had strength to resist you or I could betake myself to a strong support,’ were nothing but a wish for the strength of the Qa’im (peace be upon him). And the ‘support’ [1] is none other than the strength of his companions: indeed a man among them will be given the strength of forty men; his heart is harder than blocks of iron; and were they to pass by mountains of iron, they would crumble; and they will not sheathe their swords until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is pleased.”

(Quran, Hud 11:80; translation: M. H. Shakir)

/5161 _28- And ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said, regarding His saying: “And his people came to him, hastening to him” — that is, they were rushing and running. And regarding His saying, “marked (for punishment),” he said: it means dotted [2].

His saying, exalted is He:

“And to Madyan We sent their brother Shu‘aib. He said: O my people! serve Allah, you have no god other than Him, and do not give short measure and weight; surely I see you in prosperity and surely I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing day. And O my people! give full measure and weight fairly, and defraud not people of their things, and do not act corruptly in the land, making mischief” — to His saying — “and they added not to them but perdition.” [84-101]

(Quran, Hud 11:84-85 and 11:101; translation: M. H. Shakir)

99-/5162 _1- ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: Allah sent Shu‘aib to Madyan, a village on the road to al-Sham, but they did not believe in him. Allah related their words, “O Shu‘aib! does your prayer command you that we should leave off what our fathers served,” up to His saying, “the clement, the right-minded.” He said: They meant, “Indeed you are the foolish and the ignorant,” but Allah, Mighty and Majestic, veiled their words and said, “Indeed you are the clement, the right-minded.” Allah destroyed them for giving short measure and weight. He said: “O my people! have you considered if I am upon a clear proof from my Lord and He has given me from Himself a goodly sustenance? And I do not desire to go behind you, doing what I forbid you; I desire nothing but reform so far as I am able, and my success is only with Allah; on Him do I rely and to Him do I turn.” Then ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: Then he reminded and warned them by what befell past nations, saying: “And O my people! let not opposition to me make you guilty so that there should befall you the like of what befell the people of Nuh, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih, and the people of Lut are not far off from you.” “They said: O Shu‘aib! we do not understand much of what you say, and surely we see you weak among us,” and his eyesight had grown weak; “and were it not for your family, we would certainly stone you, and you are not mighty against us,” up to His saying, “Surely I am a watcher with you,” i.e., “wait.” So Allah sent upon them the Cry and they died. It is His saying: “And when Our commandment came, We delivered Shu‘aib and those who believed with him by a mercy from Us, and those who were unjust the Cry overtook them, so they became motionless bodies in their abodes, as though they had never dwelt in them; now surely away with Madyan as the Thamud were done away.”

(Quran, Hud 11:87, 11:88, 11:89, 11:91, 11:93, 11:94-95; translation: M. H. Shakir)

99-/5163 _2- Al-‘Ayyashi: From Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Isa, from some of his companions, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) regarding Allah’s saying, “Surely I see you in prosperity.” He said: “Their prices were low.”

(Quran, Hud 11:84; translation: M. H. Shakir)

99-/5164 _3- From Muhammad b. al-Fudayl, from al-Rida (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about awaiting the relief (al-faraj). He said: “Do you not know that awaiting the relief is itself part of the relief?” Then he said: “Surely Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says, ‘And watch; surely I am a watcher with you.’”

(Quran, Hud 11:93; translation: M. H. Shakir)

99-/5165 _4- Ibn Babawayh said: Al-Muzaffar b. Ja‘far b. al-Muzaffar al-‘Alawi al-Samarqandi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us, saying: Muhammad b. Mas‘ud narrated to us, saying: Abu Salih Khalaf b. Hammad al-Kashshi narrated to us, saying: Sahl b. Ziyad narrated to us, saying: Muhammad b. al-Husayn narrated to me, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Abi Nasr, who said: Al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: “How excellent are patience and awaiting the relief! Have you not heard Allah’s saying, ‘And watch; surely I am a watcher with you,’ and, ‘So wait; surely I, too, am of those who wait’ [1]. So you must be patient, for relief only comes at the point of despair. Indeed those before you were more patient than you.”

99-/5166 _5- And from him: from ‘Ali b. ‘Abdillah al-Warraq, and Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Sinani, and ‘Ali b. Ahmad b. Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with them), who said: Abu al-‘Abbas Ahmad b. Yahya b. Zakariyya al-Qattan narrated to us, saying: Bakr b. ‘Abdillah b. Habib narrated to us, saying: Tamim b. Buhlul narrated to us, from his father, from Ja‘far b. Sulayman al-Basri, from ‘Abdillah b. al-Fadl al-Hashimi, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon him). I said: What about His, Mighty and Majestic, saying, “And my success is not but with Allah,” and His, Mighty and Majestic, saying, “If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there then that can help you after Him” [1]? He said: “When a servant does what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has commanded him of obedience, his action is in accordance with Allah’s command, and by it the servant is called ‘granted success (muwafaq).’ And when the servant intends to enter into something of Allah’s disobedience, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, interposes between him and that sin so he leaves it, then his leaving it is by Allah’s tawfiq—exalted is His remembrance. But whenever He leaves him to that sin and does not interpose between him and it until he commits it [2], then He has forsaken him, has not helped him, and has not granted him success.”

/5167 _6- And ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: Then the Mighty and Majestic mentioned the story of Moses (peace be upon him), saying: “And certainly We sent Musa with Our signs and a clear authority,” up to His saying, “and they were pursued in this world by a curse,” meaning destruction and drowning; “and on the Day of Resurrection evil is the gift which shall be given,” i.e., Allah will furnish them with punishment. Then He said to His Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family): “This is of the announcements of the towns,” meaning their reports, “We relate them to you, O Muhammad; among them are standing and mown down,” up to His saying, “and they added not to them but perdition,” i.e., loss.

99-/5168 _7- Al-‘Ayyashi: From Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): He recited, “and among them are standing and mown down,” with accusative endings, then said: “O Aba Muhammad, it is not mown down except by iron.” And in another narration: “and among them are standing and mown down. Is the mowing down except by iron?”
