Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.) wept for Imam Husain (a.s.) on the bank of the Euphrates

Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.) wept for Imam Husain (a.s.) on the bank of the Euphrates.

As for the gatherings of Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.) in Madinah:

Whenever he saw Imam Husain (a.s.), he would weep and say:

“O cause of the tears of every believer.”

Imam Husain (a.s.) would ask: “Is it I, O father?” He would reply: “Yes.” [646]

The eighth gathering consisted of several gatherings of Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.) in Karbalāʾ.

Among them is what Mujāhid narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās:

“I was accompanying Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.) when he was travelling to Ṣiffīn. When we reached Naynawā, near the Euphrates River, he called out in a loud voice:

‘O Ibn ʿAbbās, do you know this place?’

I replied:

‘I do not know it.’

He said:

‘If you knew it as I know it, you would not pass through it without weeping as I do.’

Then he began to weep intensely until his beard became wet and tears flowed onto his chest. We too wept because of his weeping.

He kept saying:

‘Alas! Alas! What have I to do with the family of Abū Sufyān and the family of Ḥarb, who are among the armies of Shayṭān?

O Abā ʿAbdillāh, be patient. What will reach you from them has already reached your father.’

Then he asked for water, performed wuḍūʾ, and prayed for some time. Afterwards he repeated the same words.

Then he slept briefly and awoke.

He said:

‘O Ibn ʿAbbās, shall I tell you about the dream I just saw?’

I replied:

‘Please do, if Allah wills.’

He said:

‘I saw men descending from heaven carrying white banners. They had shining white swords hanging from their waists.

Then they drew a line around this land.

After that I saw these palm trees, their branches touching the ground, and I saw them immersed in blood.

I then saw my son Imam Husain (a.s.), the fruit of my heart and the light of my eyes, drowning in that blood. No matter how much he cried for help, no one came to his aid.

It was as though those men who had descended from heaven were calling out:

“O family of the Messenger of Allah, be patient! You shall be killed by the worst of people.

O Abā ʿAbdillāh, Paradise longs for you.”

Then they turned toward me, offered me condolences, and said:

“O Abā al-Ḥusayn, glad tidings to you. Allah will delight your eyes through him on the Day of Judgment.”’

Then I awoke.

By Allah, the truthful Prophet, Abū al-Qāsim (s.a.w.a.), informed me that I would go forth against the people of rebellion, arrive at this land, and that here my son Imam Husain (a.s.) would be buried together with seventeen men from my descendants and the descendants of Fāṭimah (a.s.).

This land is known in the heavens as the land of Karb and Balāʾ, just as the lands of the Two Sanctuaries and the sacred area of Bayt al-Maqdis are known.

Then he said:

‘O Ibn ʿAbbās, look around this area and see whether you can find droppings of gazelles. By Allah, I have not been given false information concerning them, and they are yellow like saffron.’”

Ibn ʿAbbās said:

I searched and found them. Then I called out:

“O Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.), this is exactly what you described.”

He said:

“Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth.”

Then he stood up and hurried toward them. He picked them up, smelled them, and said:

“This is exactly it. Do you know their story?

When ʿĪsā ibn Maryam (a.s.) passed through this land with his disciples, he saw a number of gazelles gathered here weeping. Then ʿĪsā sat down, and the disciples also sat down and began to weep.

They asked:

‘O Spirit of Allah, what is the reason for your weeping?’

He replied:

‘This is the land of Karbalāʾ. Here will be killed the son of the Prophet of Allah, Ahmad (s.a.w.a.), and the son of the pure and chaste lady who resembles Maryam. He will be buried here.

Its soil is more fragrant than musk, because it contains his soil. Such is the condition of the soil of the Prophets and the children of the Prophets.

These gazelles spoke to me and said: We remain in this place out of longing for him, and we are safe here.’

Then ʿĪsā (a.s.) picked up these droppings and smelled them. He said:

‘Their fragrance comes from the fragrant plants of this land.

O Allah, preserve these until his father smells them and finds consolation through them.’”

That is why they have remained until now, although they have become yellow because of the passage of time.

Then Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.) said:

“This is the land of Karb and Balāʾ.”

Then he raised his voice and said:

“O God of ʿĪsā ibn Maryam, do not bless his killers nor those who fail to help him.”

Then he wept for a long time until he fell unconscious upon his face.

We also wept.

When he regained consciousness, he picked up some of those droppings, wrapped them in the corner of his cloak, and said to me:

“You also take some, wrap them up, and preserve them. When you see fresh blood flowing from them, know that Imam Husain (a.s.) has been martyred.”

Ibn ʿAbbās said:

I took them and guarded them more carefully than some of the obligatory duties. I kept them in my sleeve and never parted from them.

One day I was asleep. Suddenly I awoke and saw fresh blood flowing from them, and my sleeve was filled with blood.

I sat down and began to weep, saying to myself:

“Surely Imam Husain (a.s.) has been martyred. ʿAlī (a.s.) never informed me of anything that did not come true.”

Then I went outside and saw that Madinah appeared to be covered by a thin cloud.

When the sun appeared, it looked as though it had been eclipsed. The walls of the city seemed as though fresh blood had been poured upon them.

Then I heard a voice from the corner of a house reciting an elegy whose meaning was:

“Be patient, O family of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), for the son of Fāṭimah al-Batūl has been killed.

And the Trustworthy Spirit has descended with cries and lamentation.”

Then the reciter wept loudly, and I also wept.

I recorded the date and found that it was the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ.

Later I related this account to those who had been with Imam Husain (a.s.). They said:

“By Allah, we too heard the voice of that mourner on the battlefield, but we did not know who it was. We thought it might have been al-Khiḍr.” [647]

The second narration is what Harthamah ibn Abī Muslim reported:

We returned with Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.) from Ṣiffīn and stopped at Karbalāʾ.

After completing the morning prayer, he picked up some soil, smelled it, and said:

“What a blessed soil you are! From you will be resurrected a people who shall enter Paradise without reckoning.”

Then Harthamah returned to his wife, who was a Shīʿah, and said:

“Your master said such-and-such about Karbalāʾ.”

She replied: “O Amīr al-Muʾminīn, whatever he said is the truth.”

Later, when Sayyid al-Shuhadāʾ (a.s.) arrived in Karbalāʾ, Harthamah was serving in the army of Ibn Saʿd. At that moment he remembered the words of Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.).

He mounted his camel, went to Imām Imam Husain (a.s.), greeted him, and related the statement of Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.).

The Imām asked him:

“What is your position now? Are you with us or against us?”

He replied:

“I am neither with you nor against you. I have left my young children in Kūfah, and I fear Ibn Ziyād for their sake.”

The Imām said:

“Then leave and go somewhere where you will neither see our place of martyrdom nor hear our cries.

For by Allah, today if anyone hears our call for help and does not come to our aid, he will certainly be thrown into the Fire of Hell upon his face.” [648]

The third narration is reported from Imām Muḥammad al-Bāqir (a.s.):

Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.) once passed through Karbalāʾ with two of his companions.

Tears filled his eyes and he said:

“Here will be the resting place of their camels.

Here will be the place where their baggage is unloaded.

Here will be the place where their blood will be shed.

Glad tidings to you, O earth, upon which the blood of the beloved ones will be poured.” [649]

The ninth gatherings were those of Lady Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ (a.s.) in Madinah.

They are too numerous to count, for whenever news of this tragedy reached her, a gathering of weeping and lamentation would take place.

The tenth gathering was that of Umm Ayman in Madinah.

The reciter of the elegy was Umm Ayman, and the listener was Lady Zaynab (a.s.).

This occurred when Umm Ayman narrated to her the detailed account of the future martyrdom of Imām Imam Husain (a.s.).

It was the same narration that Lady Zaynab (a.s.) later related to Imām al-Sajjād (a.s.) at the place of martyrdom in order to console him. [650]
