99-/1913 - al-‘Ayyāshī: from Dāwūd b. Sirḥān, from a man, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), regarding the word of God: “And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden as wide as the heavens and the earth.” He said: “When they set it [1] like this,” and he spread his two hands, one alongside the other. (Quran, Āl ‘Imrān 3:133, M. H. Shakir: And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord; and a Garden, the extensiveness of which is as the heavens and the earth.)

99-/1914 - Ibn Shahrāshūb in (al-Manāqib): He said in the Tafsīr of Yūsuf al-Qaṭṭān, from Wakī‘, from al-Thawrī, from al-Suddī, who said: I was with ‘Umar b. al-Khaṭṭāb when Ka‘b b. al-Ashraf, Mālik b. al-Ṣayf [2], and Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab came to him and said: “In your Book there is a Garden whose width is the heavens and the earth. If the expanse of one Garden is like seven heavens and seven earths, then where will all the Gardens be on the Day of Resurrection?” ‘Umar said: “I do not know.” [3] While they were discussing that, ‘Alī (peace be upon him) entered and said: “What are you discussing?” The Jew [4] put the question to him. He (peace be upon him) said to them: “Tell me, when the daytime arrives, where is the night? And when the night arrives, where is the daytime?” They said to him: “It is in the knowledge of God, exalted is He.” ‘Alī (peace be upon him) said: “Likewise the Gardens are in the knowledge of God, exalted is He.” Then ‘Alī (peace be upon him) went to the Prophet (may God bless him and his family) and told him of that, and it was revealed: “So ask the followers of the Reminder if you do not know.” [5] (Quran, al-Naḥl 16:43; al-Anbiyā’ 21:7, M. H. Shakir: So ask the followers of the Reminder if you do not know.)

99-/1915 - Ibn al-Fārisī in (Rawḍat al-Wā‘iẓīn) said: Anas b. Mālik was asked: “Abū Ḥamzah, is Paradise on earth or in heaven?” He said: “What earth could contain Paradise? And what heaven could contain Paradise?” He was asked: “So where is it?” He said: “Above the seventh heaven, beneath the Throne.”

Those who spend (benevolently) in ease and in adversity, and those who restrain (their) anger and pardon men; and Allah loves the doers of good (to others). (Quran, Āl ‘Imrān 3:134, M. H. Shakir)

99-/1916 - Muḥammad b. Ya‘qūb: from ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, from his father [1], from some of his companions, from Mālik b. Ḥuṣayn al-Sakūnī, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) said: “No servant swallows his anger except that God, Mighty and Majestic, increases him in honor in this world and the next. And God, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘And those who restrain (their) anger and pardon men, and Allah loves the doers of good (to others)’—and God rewards him in place of that anger.” (Quran, Āl ‘Imrān 3:134, M. H. Shakir)

99-/1917 - al-Mufīd in (Irshāduh): He said: Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad informed me, who said: My grandfather narrated to me, who said: Muḥammad b. Ja‘far and others narrated to me. They said: A man from his household stood over ‘Alī b. al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them both) and reviled and insulted him, but he did not speak to him. When the man left, he said to his companions: “You have heard what this man said, and I would like you to come with me so that you may hear my reply to him.” They said: “We will; indeed we wished that you would speak to him and that we would speak.” He took his sandals and walked, saying: “And those who restrain (their) anger and pardon men, and Allah loves the doers of good (to others).” We knew he would say nothing [harsh]. He went out until he reached the man’s house and called him, saying: “Say to him: This is ‘Alī b. al-Ḥusayn.” He came out to us bristling for evil, not doubting that he had come only to requite him for some of what had issued from him. ‘Alī b. al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them both) said to him: “My brother, you just attacked me and spoke. If what you said is in me, I ask God’s forgiveness for it; and if what you said is not in me, may God forgive you.” The man kissed him between his eyes and said: “Rather, I said about you what is not in you, and I am more deserving of it.” The narrator of the report said: The man was al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan. (Quran, Āl ‘Imrān 3:134, M. H. Shakir)

99-/1918 - From him, who said: al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad informed me, from his grandfather, who said: A shaykh from the people of Yemen, over seventy [2] years of age, narrated to me. He said: A man called ‘Abd Allāh [3] b. Muḥammad informed me. He said: I heard ‘Abd al-Razzāq say: “May I be your ransom, a maidservant of ‘Alī b. al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them both) was pouring water over him so he could prepare for the prayer, when she dozed [4] and the ewer fell from her hand and gashed him. He raised his head toward her, and the girl said to him: ‘Surely God, exalted is He, says: “And those who restrain (their) anger.”’ He said: ‘I have restrained my anger.’ She said: ‘“And (those who) pardon men.”’ He said to her: ‘May God pardon you.’ She said: ‘“And Allah loves the doers of good (to others).”’ He said: ‘Go, you are free for the sake of God.’”

And those who when they commit an indecency or do injustice to their souls remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their faults — and who forgives the faults but Allah — and (who) do not knowingly persist in what they have done. • (As for) these — their reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide in them, and excellent is the reward of the laborers. (Quran, Āl ‘Imrān 3:135-136, M. H. Shakir)

99-/1919 - Muḥammad b. Ya‘qūb: from Abū ‘Alī al-Ash‘arī, from Muḥammad b. Sālim, from Aḥmad b. al-Naẓr, from ‘Amr b. Shimr, from Jābir, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding the word of God, Mighty and Majestic: “And (who) do not knowingly persist in what they have done.” He said: “Persistence (al-iṣrār) is that a person commits a sin and does not ask God for forgiveness, and does not even speak to his soul about repentance — that is persistence.” (Quran, Āl ‘Imrān 3:135, M. H. Shakir)

99-/1920 - From him, who said: ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn Faḍḍāl, from Ḥafṣ b. al-Mu’adhdhin, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him); and from Muḥammad b. Ismā‘īl b. Bazī‘, from Muḥammad b. Sinān, from Ismā‘īl b. Jābir, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) [1] — in a long discourse — he exhorted his companions: “Beware of persistence regarding anything God, exalted is He, has forbidden in the apparent and the inner (meanings) of the Qur’an. God, exalted is He, has said: ‘And (who) do not knowingly persist in what they have done’ [2] — meaning the believers before you: when they forgot something of what God stipulated in His Book, they recognized that they had disobeyed by leaving that thing; so they sought forgiveness and did not return to leaving it. That is the meaning of God’s saying: ‘And (who) do not knowingly persist in what they have done.’” (Quran, Āl ‘Imrān 3:135, M. H. Shakir)

99-/1921 - al-‘Ayyāshī: from Abū ‘Amr al-Zubayrī, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: “May God have mercy on a servant who is not content that Iblīs be his counterpart in his religion. In the Book of God there is salvation from ruin, insight from blindness, a guide to guidance, and a healing for what is in the breasts, in what God, exalted is He, has commanded you of seeking forgiveness and repentance. God said: ‘And those who when they commit an indecency or do injustice to their souls remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their faults — and who forgives the faults but Allah — and (who) do not knowingly persist in what they have done.’ And He said: ‘And whoever does evil or wrongs his soul, then asks forgiveness of Allah, shall find Allah Forgiving, Merciful’ [3]. This is what God commanded of seeking forgiveness, and He stipulated along with it repentance and refraining from what God has forbidden, for He says: ‘To Him do ascend the good words; and the good deeds, He exalts them.’ [4]” (Quran, Āl ‘Imrān 3:135, M. H. Shakir; al-Nisā’ 4:110, M. H. Shakir; Fāṭir 35:10, M. H. Shakir)
