99-/705 _6- ‘Umar b. Ibrāhīm al-Awsī said: Gabriel descended to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his Household) and said: “Surely Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says to you: I have given to your community what I did not give to any of the nations.” He said: “And what is that, O my brother?” He said: “His saying, Exalted is He: So remember Me, I will remember you.” Indeed He has made abundant the bestowal and the gift from Your Majesty by this distinction: He created the celestial sphere, the upper and lower light, the Throne and the Footstool, the beasts and creeping things, the wild creatures and the cattle, yet He did not say to any category of them: So remember Me, I will remember you. So when will you render thanks to your Master for what He has conferred upon you—He has blessed you and given to you.
Qur’an, Al-Baqara 2:153 (M. H. Shakir): O you who believe! seek assistance through patience and prayer; surely Allah is with the patient.
99-/706 _1- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from al-Fuḍayl, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “O Fuḍayl, convey our greetings to whomever of our followers you meet, and say to them: I say that I can avail you nothing before Allah except through piety. So guard your tongues, restrain your hands, and adhere to patience and prayer—surely Allah is with the patient.”
99-/707 _2- From ‘Abd Allāh b. Ṭalḥa: Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “Patience is fasting.”
99-/708 _3- From the Ṣaḥīfa of Imām al-Riḍā (peace be upon him): “There is no verse in the Qur’an that begins with ‘O you who believe’ except that it is about us.”
99-/709 _4- And from the path of the opponents: Muwaffaq b. Aḥmad—who is among the notable scholars of the opponents—narrated with his chain from Mujāhid, from Ibn ‘Abbās, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his Household) said: “Allah did not reveal any verse that contains ‘O you who believe’ except that ‘Alī is its head and its commander.”
99-/710 _5- And from him also, with his chain from ‘Ikrima, from Ibn ‘Abbās, who said: Allah, Exalted is He, did not reveal in the Qur’an any verse in which He says “O you who believe” except that ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him) was its noble one and its commander.
Qur’an, Al-Baqara 2:155–157 (M. H. Shakir):
And We will most certainly try you with somewhat of fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits; and give good news to the patient,
Who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: Surely we are Allah’s and to Him we shall surely return.
Those are they on whom are blessings and mercy from their Lord, and those are the followers of the right course.
99-/711 _1- Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Nu‘mānī—known as Ibn Zaynab—said: Muḥammad b. Hammām narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd Allāh b. Ja‘far al-Ḥimyarī narrated to us; he said: Aḥmad b. Hilāl narrated to us; he said: al-Ḥasan b. Maḥbūb narrated to us, from ‘Alī b. Ri’āb, from Muḥammad b. Muslim, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh Ja‘far b. Muḥammad (peace be upon them both), who said: “Indeed, before the [rising of the] Qā’im there are signs—an affliction from Allah, Exalted is He, for His believing servants.” I said: “What are they?” He said: “That is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: And We will most certainly try you with somewhat of fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits, and give good news to the patient. He said: We will most certainly try you—meaning the believers—with somewhat of fear from the kings of the sons of so-and-so at the end of their rule; and hunger due to the high prices; and loss of property through the corruption of trade and the scarcity of profit therein; and lives through widespread death; and fruits through the meager yield of what is planted and the scant blessing in the fruits. And give good news to the patient at that time with the emergence of the Qā’im (peace be upon him).” Then he said: “O Muḥammad, this is its interpretation. Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: And none knows its interpretation except Allah and those firmly rooted in knowledge.”
99-/712 _2- And from him: He said: Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Sa‘īd b. ‘Uqda informed us; he said: Aḥmad b. Yūsuf b. Ya‘qūb Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ju‘fī informed me from his book; he said: Ismā‘īl b. Mihrān narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan b. ‘Alī b. Abī Ḥamza, from his father, from Abū Baṣīr, who said: Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) said: “It is inevitable that before the rising of the Qā’im there will be a year in which people suffer hunger, and they will be struck by severe fear of killing, and loss of property and lives and fruits; and indeed that is clear in the Book of Allah.” Then he recited this verse:
