Tabarruk in History

Tabarruk in History

Is tabarruk in its technical sense a historical reality practiced among previous religious communities — such that, through their conduct, we may understand that tabarruk was also legitimate in earlier divine nations?

In response, we say: seeking blessings from the relics of the Prophets is indeed among the matters that existed in earlier religious nations as well. Here are some examples:

  1. Allah, the Exalted, speaks of the tabarruk of Prophet Yaʿqūb (as) with the shirt of his son, Prophet Yūsuf (as), when Yūsuf said:

“Take this my shirt and cast it over my father’s face; he will become seeing.”

(Sūrah Yūsuf, 12:93)

The brothers of Prophet Yūsuf (as) obeyed his command, took the shirt, and cast it upon the face of their father, Yaʿqūb (as) — who, out of intense grief and abundant weeping for his lost son, had gone blind. At that moment, by the permission of Allah, the eyes of Yaʿqūb regained sight through the blessing of Yūsuf’s shirt.

Of course, Allah, the Exalted, has the power to restore sight directly; however, since the universe operates through causes and effects — some material and some spiritual — divine wisdom decreed that He place blessing (barakah) in the Prophets, the righteous, and their relics, so that people might develop faith in them, draw near to them, and thereby draw nearer to Allah by taking them as examples — thus attaining divine reward.

  1. Another instance the Qur’an mentions concerning earlier religious nations is the Israelites seeking blessings from the Ark (Tabūt) which contained the relics of the family of Mūsā (as) and the family of Hārūn (as).

Allah, the Exalted, recounts the story of the Prophet of the Israelites who announced the kingship of Ṭālūt, saying:

“Indeed, the sign of his kingship is that the Ark will come to you, in which is tranquility from your Lord and a remnant of what the family of Mūsā and the family of Hārūn left, carried by the angels.” (Sūrah al-Baqarah, 2:248)

This Ark was the very one in which the mother of Prophet Mūsā (as), by Allah’s command, placed her infant son and set it afloat upon the river. The Ark held a position of great sanctity among the Israelites — they sought blessings (tabarruk) through it.

Before his death, Prophet Mūsā (as) placed the Tablets, his armor, and other tokens of Prophethood within the Ark and entrusted it to his successor, Yūshaʿ. The Ark remained with the Israelites, hidden from public view. As long as the Ark was with them, they lived in honor and comfort. When they sinned and disrespected it, Allah concealed it from them.

After some time, they asked one of their prophets for the return of the Ark. Allah then appointed Ṭālūt as their king, and the sign of his kingship was the return of that very Ark.

Al-Zamakhsharī states: “The Tabūt was the chest of the Torah, and whenever Mūsā (as) was about to go into battle, he would bring it out and place it before the Israelites so that, by seeing it, they would gain tranquility and not lose heart in combat.” [20]

From this account, it is clear that the Children of Israel sought blessings from the Ark that contained the relics of Prophet Mūsā (as) and held it in great reverence.
