Wahhābī Fatwas on the Prohibition of Tabarruk

Wahhābī Fatwas on the Prohibition of Tabarruk

  1. Ṣāliḥ ibn Fawzān, one of the Wahhābī muftis, says: “Prostrating on the turbah (sacred soil) — if it is done with the intention of seeking blessing (tabarruk) from that soil or seeking nearness to a saint — is major shirk (shirk akbar). And if the purpose is to seek nearness to Allah while believing in the virtue of that soil (like the virtue of the sacred lands of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, al-Masjid al-Nabawī, and al-Masjid al-Aqṣā), then it is an innovation (bidʿah).” [1]
  2. Ibn ʿUthaymīn says: “Seeking blessing from the cloth covering the Kaʿbah and wiping it for blessing is among the innovations (bidʿah), because nothing of this kind has been reported from the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله).” [2]
  3. The Permanent Committee of Wahhābī Muftis says: “The people’s attention to such mosques, wiping their walls and prayer niches, and seeking blessing from them is an innovation and a form of shirk, similar to what the pagans of the Age of Ignorance used to do.” [3]
  4. Ibn Bāz says: “Placing the Qur’an in a car for the purpose of seeking blessing has no foundation and is not permissible.” [4]
  5. Ibn Fawzān says: “Tabarruk means seeking barakah (blessing), which means the stability of good and its increase. This seeking must be directed only to the One Who owns and controls it — that is, Allah, the Exalted, Who sends down blessings and grants permanence. No created being has the power to bestow, create, or sustain blessing. Therefore, seeking blessing from places, relics, or persons — whether living or dead — is not permissible, for it is either shirk or...” [5]
  6. Ibn ʿUthaymīn also says: “Some visitors touch the prayer niche, the pulpit, and the walls of the mosque with their hands — all of this is innovation (bidʿah).” [6]
