Ibrahim Ayah 5

He (may Allah bless him and his family) was not addressed by Allah in any tongue except that it reached his hearing in Arabic; Gabriel (peace be upon him) would translate all of it for him, as an honor from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to him (may Allah bless him and his family).

قوله تعالي:

وَ ذَكِّرْهُمْ بِأَيّٰامِ اللّٰهِ -إلى قوله تعالي- صَبّٰارٍ شَكُورٍ [5]

And remind them of the days of Allah—surely there are signs in this for every patient, grateful one. (Quran 14:5, M. H. Shakir)

The Shaykh in his Amālī said: A group informed us, from Abū al-Mufaḍḍal, who said: Abū Ahmad ‘Ubaydullah b. al-Ḥusayn b. Ibrāhīm al-‘Alawī al-Naṣībī (may Allah have mercy on him) in Baghdad narrated to us, who said: I heard my grandfather Ibrāhīm b. ‘Alī narrate, from his father ‘Alī b. ‘Ubaydullah, who said: Two righteous elders from our people, both sayyids, narrated to me, from Mūsā b. Ja‘far, from his father Ja‘far b. Muhammad, from his father Muhammad b. ‘Alī, from his father (peace be upon them). And al-Ḥusayn b. Zayd b. ‘Alī Dhū al-Dam‘ah narrated it to me, who said: My uncle ‘Umar b. ‘Alī narrated to me, who said: My brother Muhammad b. ‘Alī narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather al-Ḥusayn (may Allah bless them). Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “And ‘Abdullah b. al-‘Abbās and Jābir b. ‘Abdillah al-Anṣārī—who was of Badr, Uḥud, and al-Shajarah, and among those companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) who were pure in the love of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him)—narrated to me: They said: While the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) was in his mosque among a group of the companions, in whom were: Abū Bakr, Abū ‘Ubaydah, ‘Umar, ‘Uthmān, ‘Abd al-Raḥmān, and two men from the reciters among the companions—one from the Muhājirīn, ‘Abdullah b. Umm ‘Abd, and from the Anṣār, Ubayy b. Ka‘b—and they were both Badri. ‘Abdullah recited from the sūrah in which Luqmān is mentioned until he reached this verse: ‘And He has bestowed upon you His favors manifested and hidden’ (Quran 31:20). And Ubayy recited from the sūrah in which Ibrāhīm (peace be upon him) is mentioned: ‘And remind them of the days of Allah; surely there are signs in this for every patient, grateful one’ (Quran 14:5). They said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘The Days of Allah are His blessings and His trials; they are His exemplary chastisements, glory be to Him.’ Then he turned (may Allah bless him and his family) to those companions present and said: ‘I indeed attend to you with admonition, in measured intervals, fearing weariness for you; and my Lord, Glorious is His Majesty, has revealed to me to remind you of the blessing and to warn you by what He has recounted to you from His Book,’ and he recited: ‘And He has bestowed upon you His favors...’ Then he said to them: ‘Now say what you will: what is the first blessing Allah made you desire and tried you with?’ The people all spoke, mentioning the blessings Allah had bestowed on them and shown them goodness through—of livelihood, furnishings, offspring, and spouses—up to the rest of His manifest favors with which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, tried them. When they fell silent, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) turned to ‘Alī (peace be upon him) and said: ‘O Abā al-Ḥasan, speak, for your companions have spoken.’ He said: ‘How can I speak—may my father and mother be ransomed for you—when it is only by you that Allah has guided us?’ He said: ‘Even so, then speak. What is the first blessing with which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, tried you and bestowed upon you?’ He said: ‘That He created me—exalted is His praise—when I was not a thing mentioned.’ He said: ‘You have spoken the truth. What is the second?’ He said: ‘Allah did well by me when He created me, making me living and not dead.’ He said: ‘You have spoken the truth. What is the third?’ He said: ‘That He brought me forth—and to Him is the praise—in the best form and most balanced composition.’ He said: ‘You have spoken the truth. What is the fourth?’ He said: ‘That He made me thoughtful and conscious, not foolish or heedless.’ He said: ‘You have spoken the truth. What is the fifth?’ He said: ‘That He made for me senses by which I perceive what I seek, and He made for me a radiant lamp.’ He said: ‘You have spoken the truth. What is the sixth?’ He said: ‘That He guided me to His religion and did not mislead me from His path.’ He said: ‘You have spoken the truth. What is the seventh?’ He said: ‘That He made for me a return to a life that does not cease.’ He said: ‘You have spoken the truth. What is the eighth?’ He said: ‘That He made me a king, an owner, not owned.’ He said: ‘You have spoken the truth. What is the ninth?’ He said: ‘That He subjected to me His heaven and His earth, and what is in them and between them of His creation.’ He said: ‘You have spoken the truth. What is the tenth?’ He said: ‘That He, glorified be He, made us males, guardians over our spouses, not females.’ He said: ‘You have spoken the truth. What after this?’ He said: ‘The blessings of Allah, O Prophet of Allah, are many and pleasant,’ and he recited: ‘And if you count Allah’s favor, you will not be able to number it’ (Quran 14:34; 16:18). The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) smiled and said: ‘May wisdom delight you; may knowledge delight you, O Abā al-Ḥasan. You are the heir to my knowledge and the one who clarifies to my community what they differ about after me. Whoever loves you for your religion and follows your path is among those guided to a straight path; and whoever turns away from your guidance, hates you, and forsakes you will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection without any share (of good).’”
