17:37 — And do not go about in the land exultingly, for you cannot cut through the earth nor reach the mountains in height. (M. H. Shakir)
31:19 — And pursue the right course in your going about and lower your voice; surely the most hateful of voices is the braying of the asses. (M. H. Shakir)
99-/6379 _11- Al-Shaykh, in (al-Tahdhib), from Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him): A man came to him and said: I have neighbors who have maidservants that sing and play the lute, and sometimes I go into the latrine and sit there for a long time listening to them. He (peace be upon him) said to him: Do not do it. The man said: By Allah, it is not something I went to with my feet; it is only hearing that I hear with my ear. Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: May you belong to Allah! Have you not heard Allah, Mighty and Majestic, say: “Surely the hearing and the sight and the heart, all of these shall be questioned about that” (17:36)? The man said: It is as if I had never heard this verse from the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, not from an Arab nor a non-Arab. Indeed, I have abandoned it, and I ask Allah Most High for forgiveness. Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said to him: Rise, perform a bath, and pray whatever you wish, for you have been persisting in a grave matter. How bad your state would have been had you died upon that! Seek forgiveness of Allah and ask Him for repentance from everything He dislikes, for He dislikes only what is ugly, and leave the ugly to its people, for everything has its people.
17:37 — And do not go about in the land exultingly, for you cannot cut through the earth nor reach the mountains in height. (M. H. Shakir)
17:38 — All this is evil with your Lord, hateful. (M. H. Shakir)
17:39 — This is of what your Lord has revealed to you of wisdom, and do not associate with Allah any other god, lest you should be thrown into hell, blamed, cast away. (M. H. Shakir)
17:40 — What! has then your Lord preferred to give you sons, and (for Himself) taken daughters from among the angels? Surely you utter a grievous saying. (M. H. Shakir)
/6380 _1- Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding His saying, “And do not go about in the land exultingly”: that is, in insolence and joy. “For you cannot cut through the earth”: that is, you will not traverse it all; “nor reach the mountains in height”: that is, you are not able to reach the peaks of the mountains.
99-/6381 _2- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Bakr ibn Salih, from al-Qasim ibn Burayd, who said: Abu ‘Amr al-Zubayri narrated to us from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): Allah has imposed upon the two feet that one not walk with them to anything of the disobediences of Allah, and He has imposed upon them walking to what pleases Allah, Mighty and Majestic. So He said: “And do not go about in the land exultingly; for you cannot cut through the earth nor reach the mountains in height” (17:37), and He said: “And pursue the right course in your going about and lower your voice; surely the most hateful of voices is the braying of the asses” (31:19). [1]
31:19 — And pursue the right course in your going about and lower your voice; surely the most hateful of voices is the braying of the asses. (M. H. Shakir)
/6382 _3- And ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding His saying, “This is of what your Lord has revealed to you of wisdom”: it means the Qur’an and what is in it of reports [2]. Then He said, “And do not associate with Allah any other god, lest you should be thrown into hell, blamed, cast away.” The address is to the Prophet, and the meaning applies to all people. He said regarding His saying, “What! has then your Lord preferred to give you sons, and taken daughters from among the angels?”: it is a refutation of Quraysh concerning what they said—that the angels are the daughters of Allah.
17:41 — And certainly We have repeated in this Quran that they may be mindful, and it adds not save to their aversion. (M. H. Shakir)
17:42 — Say: If there had been with Him other gods as they say, then certainly they would have sought a way to the Lord of the Throne. (M. H. Shakir)
17:43 — Glory be to Him and exalted be He in high exaltation above what they say. (M. H. Shakir)
99-/6383 _4- Al-‘Ayyashi: from ‘Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding “And certainly We have repeated in this Quran that they may be mindful”: It means, “And indeed We have mentioned ‘Ali (peace be upon him) in the Qur’an, and that is the Reminder; but it added them only in aversion.”
/6384 _5- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding His saying, “and it adds not save to their aversion”: When they hear the Qur’an, they shy away from it and deny it. Then the Mighty and Majestic argued against the unbelievers who worship idols, and said: Say to them, O Muhammad: “If there had been with Him other gods, as they say, then certainly they would have sought a way to the Lord of the Throne” (17:42)—that is, if the idols were gods as they allege, they would have ascended to the Throne. Then Allah said for that: “Glory be to Him and exalted be He in high exaltation above what they say” (17:43).
17:44 — The seven heavens and the earth and whatever is in them declare His glory, and there is not a thing but glorifies Him with His praise, but you do not understand their glorification; surely He is Forbearing, Forgiving. (M. H. Shakir)
