In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Alif Lam Mim. The Romans are vanquished In a near land, and they, after being vanquished, shall overcome Within a few years. Allah’s is the command before and after; and on that day the believers shall rejoice With the help of Allah; He helps whom He pleases, and He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 99-/8317 _4- The author of Thaqib al-Manaqib narrated it with a chain reaching to Abu Hashim al-Ja‘fari, from Muhammad ibn Salih al-Armani, who said: I said to Abu Muhammad al-Hasan al-‘Askari (peace be upon him): "Explain to me the saying of Allah, the Exalted: To Allah belongs the command before and after." He (peace be upon him) said: "To Allah belongs the command before He commands, and after He commands whatever He wills." I said to myself: This is the interpretation of Allah's saying: "Now surely His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds." [Surat Al-A‘raf 7:54, M. H. Shakir] Then he (peace be upon him) turned to me and said: "It is as you have kept in your heart: Now surely His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.” I said: I bear witness that you are the proof of Allah and the son of His proof over His servants.

99-/8318 _5- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, and a number of our companions, from Sahl ibn Ziyad all together, from Ibn Mahbub, from Jamil ibn Salih, from Abu ‘Ubaydah, who said: I asked Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: Alif Lam Mim. The Romans are vanquished * in a near land.

He (peace be upon him) said: "O Abu ‘Ubaydah, surely this has an interpretation known only to Allah and the firmly rooted in knowledge from the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) migrated to Medina and made Islam manifest, he wrote a letter to the king of Rome, sending it with a messenger, inviting him to Islam. And he wrote a letter to the king of Persia, inviting him to Islam, and sent it with his messenger. As for the king of Rome, he honored the letter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) and respected his messenger. But the king of Persia belittled the letter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), tore it apart, and disrespected his messenger."

He continued:

*"At that time, the king of Persia was fighting the king of Rome, and the Muslims wished that the king of Rome would overcome the king of Persia. They were more hopeful towards the king of Rome than towards the king of Persia. So, when the king of Persia defeated the king of Rome, the Muslims disliked that and were grieved by it.

Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed regarding that a Book, a Qur'an: Alif Lam Mim. The Romans are vanquished * in a near land, meaning Persia had defeated them in the nearest land, referring to the Levant and its surrounding areas. And they, after being vanquished, shall overcome, meaning that the Muslims will defeat Persia. Within a few years. Allah’s is the command before and after, and on that day the believers shall rejoice * with the help of Allah; He helps whom He pleases. So, when the Muslims waged war against Persia and conquered it, the Muslims rejoiced at the help of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."*

He said:

I asked: "Does not Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, say: Within a few years, and indeed many years had already passed for the believers during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) and during the rule of Abu Bakr, while the Muslims only defeated Persia during the rule of ‘Umar?"

He (peace be upon him) replied: "Did I not tell you that this has an interpretation and explanation? O Abu ‘Ubaydah, the Qur’an contains abrogating and abrogated verses. Do you not hear the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: To Allah belongs the command before and after? It means that to Him belongs the will concerning the matter — to delay what He brings forward and to bring forward what He delays in His word — until the day when the judgment is finalized with the descent of victory upon the believers. That is His saying, the Mighty and Majestic: And on that day the believers shall rejoice * with the help of Allah, meaning the day when the decree is finalized with Allah’s victory."

99-/8319 _6- Ibn Babawayh said: Muhammad ibn Musa ibn al-Mutawakkil (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, he said: ‘Abdullah ibn Ja‘far al-Himyari narrated to us, from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid, he said: Al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Faddal narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj, from Sadeer as-Sayrafi, from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad as-Sadiq, from his father, from his grandfather (peace be upon them), who said:

"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: The light of Fatimah was created before the creation of the earth and the sky."

Some people asked: "O Prophet of Allah, is she then not a human?"

He (peace be upon him and his family) said: "Fatimah is a heavenly human (ḥawrā’ insiyyah)."

They asked: "O Messenger of Allah, and how is she a heavenly human?"

He said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created her from light before He created Adam, when the souls were (created). So when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created Adam, He presented her to Adam."

It was asked: "O Prophet of Allah, where was Fatimah?" He said: "She was in a case beneath the leg of the Throne." They asked: "O Prophet of Allah, what was her sustenance?" He replied: "Glorification (tasbīḥ), declaration of the oneness of Allah (tahlīl), and praise (taḥmīd)." Then, when Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created Adam and brought me forth from his loins, Allah wished to bring her forth from my loins. He made her into an apple in Paradise and Jibra’il (peace be upon him) brought it to me. He said to me: "Peace be upon you, O Muhammad, and Allah’s mercy and blessings." I said: "And peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy, my beloved Jibra’il." He said: "O Muhammad, your Lord sends you peace." I said: "From Him is peace, and to Him returns peace." He said: "O Muhammad, this apple is gifted to you by Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, from Paradise." So I took it and pressed it to my chest. He said: "O Muhammad, Allah, Glorious and Majestic, says: Eat it." I split it open, and I saw a radiant light emanating from it. I became frightened by it. He said: "Why do you not eat, O Muhammad? Eat it and do not fear, for that light belongs to the Victorious One (al-Manṣūrah) in the heavens, and she is Fatimah on the earth." I said: "My beloved Jibra’il, why is she called al-Manṣūrah (the Victorious) in the heavens and Fatimah on the earth?" He replied: "She is called Fatimah on the earth because she has separated (faṭamat) her followers from the Fire, and her enemies are cut off from her love. And she is al-Manṣūrah in the heavens." And that is His saying, the Mighty and Majestic: "And on that day the believers shall rejoice * with the help of Allah." Meaning: Allah’s help for her lovers.
