Yusuf Ayah 110

Qur’an 12:110 (M. H. Shakir): Until when the apostles despaired and thought that they were indeed told a lie, Our help came to them, and whom We pleased was delivered; and Our punishment is not averted from the guilty people.

Al-Ma’mun said to him: “O son of the Messenger of Allah, is it not your view that the prophets are infallible?” He said: “Indeed.” He mentioned the hadith until he said therein: Al-Ma’mun said to Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him): “Inform me about Allah’s saying: Until when the messengers despaired and thought that they were told a lie, Our help came to them.” Al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, exalted is He, says: ‘Until when the messengers despaired of their people, and their people thought that the messengers had been lied to, Our help came to the messengers.’”

99-/5425: From Ya‘qub, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “As for the people of the world, they have made falsehood manifest; and they were only among those whom Allah left to their own selves, that He might confer favor upon them.”

99-/5427: From Zurara, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “How was it that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) did not fear, regarding what came to him from Allah, that it might be something by which Satan incited?” He said: “When Allah takes a servant as a messenger, He sends down upon him tranquility and dignity; so that what comes to him from Allah is like what he sees with his own eyes.”

99-/5428: Abu Ja‘far ibn Jarir al-Tabari, with his chain to Abu ‘Ali al-Nahawandi, said: Abu ‘Abdillah Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qasani narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Sulayman narrated to us, who said: ‘Ali ibn Yusuf narrated to us, who said: My father narrated to me, from al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “A man came to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) and complained to him of the length of the reign of injustice. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to him: ‘By Allah, what you hope for will not be until the people of falsehood perish, the ignorant vanish, and the Godwary are secure. And it will scarcely be before none of you has a place to set his foot, and until you are, to the people, more despised than a carcass is to its owner. While you are thus, Allah’s help and the victory will come—and it is the saying of my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, in His Book: Until when the messengers despaired and thought that they were told a lie, Our help came to them (Qur’an 12:110).’” Tabari mentioned this hadith in his book, in the chapters concerning al-Qa’im (peace be upon him).

Qur’an 12:111

M. H. Shakir: Certainly there is in their stories a lesson for men of understanding. It is not a narrative which could be forged, but a verification of what is before it and a distinct explanation of all things and a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe.

/5429: And ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “Certainly there is in their stories a lesson for possessors of understanding,” meaning those with intellects. “It is not a narrative that could be forged,” meaning the Qur’an, “but a confirmation of what is before it,” meaning from the books of the prophets, “and a distinct explanation of all things, and a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe.”
