Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him) led us in the Maghrib prayer and recited the two Muʿawwidhatayn (Sūrat al-Falaq and Sūrat al-Nās), then said: "They are both from the Qur’an."

99-/12077 _4 ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm said: My father narrated to me, from Bakr ibn Muḥammad, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said:
"The reason for the revelation of the two Muʿawwidhatayn was that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) fell ill, so Jibrā’īl (peace be upon him) descended to him with these two surahs and sought refuge for him through them."

I said to Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him): “Indeed, Ibn Masʿūd used to erase the two Muʿawwidhatayn from the muṣḥaf.” He (peace be upon him) replied: ‘My father used to say: Ibn Masʿūd only did that based on his own opinion — and they are both from the Qur’an.’

99-/12079 _5 Al-Ṭabrisī said: In the ḥadīth of my father:
"Whoever recites Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak (Sūrat al-Falaq) and Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind (Sūrat al-Nās), it is as if he has recited all the books that Allah revealed to the prophets."
99-/12080 _6 And from ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
"Verses have been revealed to me the like of which had never been revealed before: the two Muʿawwidhatayn." This was reported by Muslim in al-Ṣaḥīḥ [1].
99-/12081 _7 And from him: from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), who said:
"O ʿUqbah, shall I not teach you two surahs that are the best in the Qur’an?" I said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." So he taught me the two Muʿawwidhatayn, then he recited them in the Fajr prayer and said: "Recite them whenever you rise and whenever you sleep."
99-/12082 _8 And from Abū ʿUbaydah al-Ḥadhdhā’, from Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him), who said:
"Whoever performs witr with the two Muʿawwidhatayn and Say: He, Allah, is One (112:1), it will be said to him: ‘O servant of Allah, rejoice! For Allah has accepted your witr.’"
99-/12083 _9 And from al-Fuḍayl ibn Yasār, who said: I heard Abū Jaʿfar (peace be upon him) say:
"Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) suffered from a severe illness and was in intense pain. Jibrā’īl and Mīkā’īl (peace be upon them) came to him — Jibrā’īl sat at his head, and Mīkā’īl at his feet. So Jibrā’īl sought refuge for him with Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak (Sūrat al-Falaq), and Mīkā’īl sought refuge for him with Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind (Sūrat al-Nās)."
99-/12084 _10 And from Abū Khadījah, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said:
*"Jibrā’īl came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) while he was ill. He performed ruqyah (spiritual healing) over him with the two Muʿawwidhatayn and Say: He, Allah, is One (Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ), and said: ‘In the Name of Allah, I perform ruqyah on you. May Allah cure you from every illness that harms you. Take this, and may it bring you comfort and wellness.’"
99-/12085_11 From ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sinān, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: “When you recite 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak', then say to yourself: ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak.’ And when you recite 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind', then say to yourself: ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.’”
