The Hadith of the Apple, Quince, and Pomegranate
The Hadith of the Apple, Quince, and Pomegranate...
Among them is a narration recorded in Bihar al-Anwar from al-Hasan al-Basri and Umm Salamah:
That al-Hasan (a.s.) and al-Imam Husain (a.s.) entered upon the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), while Jibraʾil (a.s.) was with him.
They began moving around him, thinking that he was Dihyah al-Kalbi.
Then Jibraʾil (a.s.) moved his hand as a person does when taking something from someone, and brought forth an apple, a quince, and a pomegranate, and gave them to the two Imams (a.s.).
Their faces lit up with joy.
They ran to their grandfather.
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) took the fruits from them, smelled them, and said:
“Go to your father and mother.”
So they went.
None of them ate from those fruits until the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) came to them.
Then they all ate together.
No matter how much they ate from them, the fruits returned to their original state.
This continued until Lady Fatimah (a.s.) passed away.
Al-Imam Husain (a.s.) said:
“The pomegranate disappeared.”
And when Amir al-Muʾminin ʿAli (a.s.) was martyred, “the quince disappeared.”
The apple remained as it was until the time when water was withheld from us.
Whenever thirst would overpower me, I would smell it, and some of my thirst would subside.
But when my thirst reached its utmost limit, I bit into it and became certain of my death.
Imam al-Sajjad (a.s.) says:
“I heard these words from my noble father one hour before his martyrdom.
When he was martyred, the fragrance of the apple could be smelled from the place of his martyrdom, but the apple itself could not be found.
That fragrance remains in that place.
Whoever among the visitors wishes to smell its fragrance should visit at dawn, for if he is among the sincere ones, he will perceive its scent.” [1184]
Twenty-sixth: Among the honors of the Kaʿbah is that Prophet Ismaʿil (a.s.) was entrusted with adorning it and clothing it with coverings.
The Arab tribes would bring gifts and offerings, and the mother of Ismaʿil (a.s.) and his wife would make garments and place them upon the House. [1185]
Thereafter, Prophet Sulayman (a.s.) sent a covering, and likewise other kings did so.
And Allah sent a garment for al-Imam Husain (a.s.), which the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) clothed him with.
As Umm Salamah narrated:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) clothing al-Imam Husain (a.s.) with a garment that was not from the garments of this world.
I asked:
‘What is this?’
He replied:
‘This is a gift which Allah has sent
for al-Imam Husain (a.s.), and its fabric is woven from the delicate feathers of the wings of Jibraʾil (a.s.).’” [1186]
And at times al-Imam Husain (a.s.) himself requested a garment from his mother for Eid.
Then Ridwan brought a garment as a gift for him and for al-Hasan (a.s.), and Fatimah (a.s.) clothed them with it, as is well known. [1187]
And at another time he requested one from his grandfather for Eid.
Allah then sent a gift, and Jibraʾil (a.s.) dyed it red at the request of that noble Imam (a.s.), and wept, as is also mentioned in a well-known narration. [1188]
And at another time he requested a garment from his sister—but an old garment, not for Eid or adornment.
Rather, it was because he knew that when he was martyred they would take away his new clothes, and he hoped that they would not desire an old garment, so that his body would not remain naked.
His sister Zaynab (a.s.) brought him an old garment.
The Imam (a.s.) tore it in several places.
Then his blood stained that garment
[1189]
with the same color with which Jibraʾil (a.s.) had dyed his Eid garment.
The soil of Karbala covered it with dust.
Spears, arrows, and swords tore it to pieces.
Yet despite all this, Ishaq ibn Huwayyah removed it and left his noble body naked upon the earth.
Alas! [1190]
The editor says:
This shirt was the shirt of Prophet Ibrahim al-Khalil (a.s.).
Three days before her martyrdom, Lady Fatimah (a.s.) gave it to Zaynab al-Kubra (a.s.) and said:
“When your brother al-Imam Husain (a.s.) asks you for this shirt, know that he is only your guest for one more hour.
Thereafter, the sons of adultery will kill him in the most severe manner.”
