Qur’an 2:256-257 — M. H. Shakir: There is no compulsion in religion; truly the right way has become clearly distinct from error; therefore, whoever disbelieves in the Shaitan and believes in Allah he indeed has laid hold on the firmest handle, which shall not break off, and Allah is Hearing, Knowing. Allah is the guardian of those who believe; He brings them out of the darkness into the light; and (as to) those who disbelieve, their guardians are the Shaitans who take them out of the light into the darkness; they are the inmates of the fire; in it they shall abide.

Translation: Ali ibn Ibrahim: That is, no one is compelled to [accept] his religion except after right guidance has indeed been made clear to him from error.

Translation: Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from several of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, from Ibn Mahbub, from ‘Abd al-‘Aziz, from ‘Abdullah ibn Abi Ya‘fur, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), “I mix with people, and I am much astonished at some who do not bear allegiance to you, but bear allegiance to so-and-so and so-and-so; they have trustworthiness, truthfulness, and loyalty. And some people who bear allegiance to you do not have that trustworthiness, loyalty, or truthfulness!” He said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) straightened himself up as he sat, turned to me as if angry, then said: “There is no religion for whoever worships Allah by the guardianship of an unjust imam who is not from Allah; and there is no blame upon whoever worships [Allah] under the guardianship of a just imam from Allah.” I said, “No religion for those, and no blame upon these?” He said, “Yes, no religion for those, and no blame upon these.” Then he said: “Do you not hear the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: Allah is the guardian of those who believe; He brings them out of the darknesses into the light—meaning from the darknesses of sins to the light of repentance and forgiveness—by their guardianship of every just imam from Allah. And He said: and as for those who disbelieve, their guardians are the taghut; they bring them out of the light into the darknesses. He only meant by this that they were upon the light of Islam, but when they took as guardians every unjust imam not from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, they went by their guardianship of him from the light of Islam into the darknesses of disbelief; so Allah made the Fire obligatory for them along with the disbelievers: they are the companions of the Fire, therein they shall abide.”

Translation: And from him: from Humayd ibn Ziyad, from al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama‘ah, from more than one, from Aban, from Muhammad ibn Muslim, from one of the two (peace be upon them), regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: so whoever disbelieves in the taghut and believes in Allah, he has indeed grasped the firmest handle. He said: “It is faith.”

Translation: Ibn Babawayh said: Muhammad ibn ‘Ali Majilawayh narrated to us, who said: My uncle Muhammad ibn Abi al-Qasim narrated to me, from Ahmad ibn Abi ‘Abdillah al-Barqi, from his father, from Khalaf ibn Hammad al-Asadi, from Abu al-Hasan al-‘Abdi, from al-A‘mash, from ‘Abayah ibn Rib‘i, from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: “Whoever wishes to grasp the firmest handle that will never break, let him grasp the guardianship of my brother and executor, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib; for none who loves him and takes him as guardian will perish, and none who hates him and shows enmity to him will be saved.”

Translation: And from him, with his chain, from Hudhayfah ibn Asid, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: “O Hudhayfah, Allah’s proof over you after me is ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib. Disbelieving in him is disbelief in Allah; associating [others] with him is associating [others] with Allah; doubting him is doubting Allah; deviating regarding him is deviating regarding Allah; denying him is denying Allah; and believing in him is believing in Allah. For he is the brother of the Messenger of Allah, his executor, and the imam of his community. He is the strong rope of Allah and His firmest handle that will not break. Two groups will perish regarding him, and he has no sin in that: the extremist and the neglectful. O Hudhayfah, do not part from ‘Ali lest you part from me, and do not oppose ‘Ali lest you oppose me. ‘Ali is from me and I am from him; whoever angers him has angered me, and whoever pleases him has pleased me.”

Translation: And from him, with his chain, he said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: “The imams are from the progeny of al-Husayn. Whoever obeys them has obeyed Allah, and whoever disobeys them has disobeyed Allah. They are the firmest handle, and they are the means to Allah, Exalted.”

Translation: From Mas‘adah ibn Sadaqah, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah recounted the story of both groups together regarding the primordial covenant, until he reached Allah’s exception for both groups, and he said: “Good and evil are two creations of Allah’s creation. He has the will concerning them to alter what He wills within what He has decreed therein, state to state; and the will concerning that for which He created [them] among His creation is to the end of what He has allotted for them of good and evil. And that is because Allah said in His Book: Allah is the guardian of those who believe; He brings them out of the darknesses into the light; and those who disbelieve, their guardians are the taghut; they bring them out of the light into the darknesses. The light is the Family of Muhammad (blessings of Allah be upon them), and the darknesses are their enemy.”

Translation: From Mihzam al-Asadi, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: I will surely punish every flock that professes [allegiance to] an imam not from Allah, even if the flock is righteous and Godwary in its deeds; and I will surely forgive for every flock that professes [allegiance to] every imam from Allah, even if the flock is evil in its deeds.” I said: “So He will pardon these and punish those?” He said: “Yes. Indeed Allah says: Allah is the guardian of those who believe; He brings them out of the darknesses into the light.” Then he mentioned the first hadith—the hadith of Ibn Abi Ya‘fur, as narrated by Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—and he added in it: “The enemies of ‘Ali, Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), are the ones abiding eternally in the Fire, even if in their religions they are at the utmost of scrupulousness, asceticism, and worship; and those who believe in ‘Ali (peace be upon him) are the ones abiding eternally in the Garden, even if in their deeds they are the opposite of that.”

Translation: Ibn Shahrashub: from al-Baqir (peace be upon him), regarding His, Exalted, saying: And those who disbelieve in the guardianship of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), their guardians are the taghut—[he said] it was revealed concerning his enemies and those who followed them; they brought the people out of the light—and the light is the guardianship of ‘Ali—so they came into the darkness of his enemies’ guardianship.

Translation: Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id, from Hammad ibn ‘Isa, from al-Husayn ibn al-Mukhtar, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Every banner that is raised before the rise of the Qa’im—its bearer is a taghut, worshipped apart from Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”

Chapter: The Virtue of Ayat al-Kursi

Translation: Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Humayd ibn Ziyad, from al-Khashshab, from Ibn Baqqah, from Mu‘adh, from ‘Amr ibn Jami‘, who raised it to ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: Whoever recites four verses from the beginning of al-Baqarah, Ayat al-Kursi, the two verses after it, and three verses from its end, will see nothing he dislikes in himself and his wealth, no Satan will come near him, and he will not forget the Qur’an.”

Translation: From him: from several of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali, from al-Hasan ibn al-Jahm, from Ibrahim ibn Mihzam, from a man who heard Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him) say: “Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi at his bedtime will not fear paralysis, if Allah wills; and whoever recites it after every obligatory prayer, no creature with venom will harm him.”

Translation: And from him: from Humayd ibn Ziyad, from al-Hasan [al-Husayn] ibn Muhammad, from Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Mithami, from Ya‘qub ibn Shu‘ayb, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded these verses to descend to the earth, they clung to the Throne and said: ‘O Lord, to where do You send us down—to the people of sins and wrongdoings?’ So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to them: ‘Descend! By My might and My majesty, none from the Family of Muhammad and their Shia will utter you after what I have made obligatory upon him [of the prescribed prayer every day] except that I shall look upon him with My hidden eye seventy times every day; for each look I will fulfill for him seventy needs; and I will accept him despite what is in him of acts of disobedience.’ They are: Umm al-Kitab—Allah bears witness that there is no god but He [Qur’an 3:18]—and Ayat al-Kursi, and the Verse of Sovereignty.”

Translation: Ibn Babawayh said: Al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn Idris narrated to us, who said: My father narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Abi al-Khattab, from Ja‘far al-Azdi, from ‘Amr ibn Abi al-Miqdam, who said: I heard Abu Ja‘far al-Baqir (peace be upon him) say: “Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi once, Allah will avert from him a thousand disliked things of the disliked matters of this world, and a thousand disliked things of the disliked matters of the Hereafter—the least of the disliked matters of the world is poverty, and the least of the disliked matters of the Hereafter is the punishment of the grave.”
