Chapter of Wild Animals and Birds; Chapter of Horses and Camels

Chapter of Wild Animals and Birds; Chapter of Horses and Camels

As for the wild animals, some of them lamented for him even before his martyrdom, as is related in the account of the gazelle with Isa (a.s.), the lion with Imam Husain (a.s.), the sheep of Isma'il (a.s.), and the horse of Ibrahim (a.s.). [409]

And on the night of the eleventh of Muharram, all the wild beasts of the desert stretched their necks toward the blessed bodies and wept until morning. [410]

As for the birds, some of them lamented for him, some spread their wings to cast shade over his body, some came to Madinah and conveyed news of his martyrdom to his daughter and to the people of Madinah, and some went to other birds and informed them of what had occurred. [411]

[Baab al-Khayl wa al-Ibil]

The Imam (a.s.) was specially connected to the horse of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), whose name was Murtajiz, and perhaps this was the horse known as Dhu'l-Janah.

It was a loyal mount. In its thirst it followed the example of its master and refused to drink water. [412]

After the martyrdom of Imam Husain (a.s.), it cried out:

“Oppression! Oppression! From a nation that has killed the son of its Prophet’s daughter!”

Then it made its way toward the camp and conveyed news of the Imam’s martyrdom to his family.

When the army attempted to seize it, it destroyed a number of them, as is mentioned in a narration. [413]

The Imam (a.s.) was also specially connected to a she-camel upon which he rode on the morning of Ashura and delivered a sermon.

Then he dismounted and instructed 'Uqbah ibn Sim'an to hobble its knees. [414]

After the martyrdom of Imam Husain (a.s.), it repeatedly struck its head upon the ground until it died. [415]

[Baab maa akhtassa be man al-awdhaa'a al-dunyawiyah]

Although Allah did not desire the world for His friends, Imam Husain (a.s.) was granted certain distinctions because he was deprived of water and food and because his body was left upon the earth.

In compensation for what was denied to him, three things of the same kind were granted to him:

First: providing water (al-seqaayah).

Second: feeding people (al-Itaa'am).

Third: the construction and flourishing of the shrines of the Imams (a.s.).

As for providing water, a special reward has been designated for giving water near his grave on the night of Ashura.

It is narrated that whoever gives water near his grave on the night of Ashura is like one who gave water to the army of Imam Husain (a.s.). [416]

From this it becomes clear that providing water—which has a reward greater than many other acts of worship—has an even greater reward when done in the way of Sayyid al-Shuhada (a.s.).

For this reason, wherever the Shi'ah establish water stations (sabeel), they are generally in the name of Imam Husain (a.s.).

Indeed, it is as though the distribution of water has become especially associated with him.

As for feeding people, the matter is obvious in the gatherings of mourning.

So much wealth is spent on feeding people during the days of Ashura and at other times that, if it were calculated and distributed over the days of the year, it might amount to a crore every day. [417]

As for construction and building, according to the narration of Lady Zaynab (a.s.), this lofty shrine shall always continue to increase in construction, adornment, and beauty day after day. [418]

And we see that the construction of the Ka'bah and other sacred shrines reaches completion, but the construction of the sanctuary and courtyard of Imam Husain (a.s.) never reaches an end.

Rather, from the day that the accursed al-Mutawakkil destroyed it and it was rebuilt, the Abbasid caliphs and later rulers continually devoted themselves to its construction, decoration, mirror-work, gilding, and other embellishments, and they continue to do so.

The author says:

“From the time I was five years old until now, when I have reached sixty years of age, I have never seen a day in which construction and renovation were not taking place there, nor have I ever heard otherwise.

And it is evident that this shall continue until the Day of Resurrection.”

The translator says:

“What I myself have witnessed includes the construction of the new dome, the expansion of the courtyard on the side of the head of the shrine, the building of the Nasiri portico, the construction of underground chambers beneath the courtyard, the paving of its floors with stone, the tiling of the courtyard walls, and the stone facing of the walls of the shrine and its porticos. Even now they remain occupied with such works.”

— End.
