The son of ‘Īsā, from Abū Hāshim al-Ja‘farī, said: I asked Abū Ja‘far Muḥammad b. ‘Alī the second (peace be upon him), “What is the meaning of ‘the One’?” He said: “That upon which all tongues are unanimous regarding oneness.”

99-/749 _4- Ibn Bābawayh said: Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Isḥāq al-Ṭālaqānī (may Allah be pleased with him) told us, saying: Muḥammad b. Sa‘īd b. Yaḥyā al-Buzūrī [2] told us, saying: Ibrāhīm b. al-Haytham al-Baladī told us, saying: my father told us, from al-Mu‘āfā b. ‘Imrān, from Isrā’īl, from al-Miqdām b. Shurayḥ b. Hāni’, from his father, who said: A Bedouin stood up on the Day of al-Jamal before the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) and said, “O Commander of the Faithful, do you say that Allah is One?” The people lunged at him and said, “O Bedouin! Do you not see how the Commander of the Faithful is preoccupied?” The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “Leave him, for what the Bedouin intends is what we want from these people.” Then he said: “O Bedouin, the statement that ‘Allah is One’ has four aspects. Two of them do not apply to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and two of them are affirmed of Him. As for the two that do not apply to Him: one is the statement of a person who says ‘one’ intending the category of numbers; this does not apply, because one who has no second does not enter into the category of numbers. Do you not see that whoever says ‘the third of three’ has disbelieved?! And the statement of one who says ‘He is one of the people,’ wanting by it a species of a genus; this does not apply to Him because it is a likenessing, and our Lord is exalted above that and transcendent. As for the two aspects that are affirmed of Him: the statement of one who says ‘He is One, having no likeness among things’—such is our Lord; and the statement of one who says ‘Verily He, our Lord, is one in meaning,’ meaning by it that He is not divisible in existence, nor in intellect, nor in imagination—such is our Lord, Mighty and Majestic.”
And there are some among men who take for themselves equals besides Allah, whom they love as they should love Allah, and those who believe are stronger in love for Allah; and had those who are unjust seen, when they see the chastisement, that the power is wholly Allah’s and that Allah is severe in requiting (evil).
When those who were followed shall renounce those who followed (them), and they see the chastisement and their ties are cut asunder.
And those who followed shall say: Had there been for us a return, then we would renounce them as they renounced us; thus does Allah show them their deeds to be intense regrets to them, and they shall not come forth from the fire. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/755 _6- Muḥammad b. Ya‘qūb: with his isnād from Aḥmad b. Abī ‘Abd Allāh, from ‘Uthmān b. ‘Īsā, from one who related it to him, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “Thus does Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them.” He said: “It is the man who leaves his wealth and does not spend it in Allah’s obedience, out of miserliness. Then he dies and leaves it to someone who uses it in Allah’s obedience or in Allah’s disobedience. If it is used in Allah’s obedience, he sees it in another’s scale, and that only increases his regret, even though the wealth had been his; and if it is used in Allah’s disobedience, then by that wealth he empowered [another] until he acted with it in Allah’s disobedience.”
99-/756 _7- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from ‘Uthmān b. ‘Īsā, from one who related it to him, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), regarding Allah’s saying: “Thus does Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them.” He said: “It is the man who leaves wealth and does not spend it in Allah’s obedience, out of miserliness. Then he dies and leaves it to one who uses it in Allah’s obedience or in His disobedience. If it is used in Allah’s obedience, he sees it in another’s scale, and that increases his regret, even though the wealth had been his; and if it is used in Allah’s disobedience, then by that [wealth] he empowered [another] until he acted with it in acts of disobedience to Allah.”
99-/757 _8- From Manṣūr b. Ḥāzim, who said: I said to Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him): “And they shall not come forth from the Fire?” He said: “The enemies of ‘Alī (peace be upon him)—they are the ones consigned to abide eternally in the Fire, forever and ever, for the duration of all durations.”
99-/758 _9- Abū ‘Alī al-Ṭabrisī: Regarding the meaning of the verse, he said: Our companions narrated from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) that he said: “It is the man who earns wealth and does no good with it; then it is inherited by one who does righteous deeds with it, so the first sees what he had earned as regret in another’s scale.”

O men! eat the lawful and good things out of what is in the earth, and do not follow the footsteps of the Shaitan; surely he is your open enemy. (M. H. Shakir)
