On the Special Expressions Used for These Noble Divine Favours

Title Four: Concerning the special divine favors and honors bestowed upon him.

On the Special Expressions Used for These Noble Divine Favours

Regarding the special manner in which these noble divine favours are expressed, there are several expressions:

The first is that in Kamil al-Ziyarat, through a reliable chain from Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.), it is narrated that:

One day the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) was in the house of Lady Fatimah (a.s.), and Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Husain (a.s.) were sitting upon his blessed lap.

Suddenly the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) began to weep and then fell into prostration.

Afterward he said:

“O Fatimah (a.s.), at this very moment Allah, the Most High, manifested Himself in your house in the most beautiful form, and said:

‘O Muhammad (s.a.w.a.), do you love Imam Husain (a.s.)?’

I replied:

‘Yes. He is the light of my eyes, my fragrant flower, and the fruit of my heart.’

Then He placed His hand upon the head of Imam Husain (a.s.) and said:

“Blessed is this newborn. Upon him are My blessings, My prayers, My mercy, and My pleasure.”

‘Know that he is the master of the martyrs of the former and latter generations in this world and the next.

He is the master of the youths of Paradise.

And his father is more excellent than he.

Convey My greetings to him and give him glad tidings that he is the means of guidance and the guide of My friends.

He is the protector of creation, the treasury of knowledge, and My proof over the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, and over the jinn and mankind.’”

The narration ends here. [317]

It is not unlikely that what is meant by tajalli (manifestation) is the complete manifestation of divine knowledge, and what is meant by “the most beautiful form” is the manifestation of perfect beauty and perfection.

Likewise, what is meant by “placing the hand” is the bestowal of a special mercy.

Thus, in this noble narration there are several unique expressions describing Allah’s special favour toward Imam Husain (a.s.).

The most exclusive and exalted of these is the expression of placing the hand, which is a metaphor for the utmost outpouring of divine favour, beyond which nothing greater can be conceived.

In the narration of the Night of Miʿraj, the special divine favour toward the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) is expressed as the placing of the hand upon his back. [318]

The difference in expression contains a particular wisdom and is not intended to indicate superiority of Imam Husain (a.s.) over the Prophet (s.a.w.a.).

In reality, placing the hand upon the back of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) is the same as placing it upon the head of Imam Husain (a.s.).

The translator says:

The word «يَد» (hand) is sometimes used in the sense of power and strength.

Since the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) bore the burdens of prophethood, and carrying burdens requires strength of the back, the expression of bestowing strength was linked to that part of the body.

Imam Husain (a.s.), however, accepted the responsibility of guiding and directing the servants of Allah by sacrificing his blessed head in the path of Allah.

Therefore, that noble place was in need of a special bestowal of strength from Allah.

And Allah knows best the secrets of these matters.

The second and third expressions are found in a narration which states that Allah Himself took the soul of Imam Husain (a.s.) and that Allah Himself performed the prayer over him. [319]

All of these expressions are metaphors for the perfection of divine favour, beyond which no greater favour can be imagined.

The essence of the matter is that Allah, the Lord of the worlds, granted to Imam Husain (a.s.) everything that could possibly be granted to a created being.

And we too hope that through seeking nearness to Allah by means of Imam Husain (a.s.), we may become recipients of divine favours and that our affairs in this world and the next may be set aright.
