Maryam Ayah 56-57

He whom Allah mentioned in the Qur’an: And mention Isma‘il in the Book—then let him look to ‘Ali son of Abi Talib.

Qur’an 19:56-57 (M. H. Shakir): And mention Idris in the Book; surely he was a truthful man, a prophet. And We raised him high in heaven.

99-/6904: Al-Mufid in (al-Ikhtisas): Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Isa, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Abi Nasr, from Tha‘labah b. Maymun, from Zurārah, said: I asked Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “and he was an apostle, a prophet.” We know the apostle; who is the prophet? He said: “The prophet is the one who sees [visions] in his sleep and hears the voice but does not behold the angel; and the apostle beholds the angel and speaks with him.” I said: Then the Imam—what is his rank? He said: “He hears the voice, but does not see, and does not behold the angel.” Then he recited this verse: “And We did not send before you any apostle or prophet or one spoken to (muhaddath).” [1]

99-/6905: Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from ‘Amr b. ‘Uthman, from Mufaddal b. Salih, from Jabir, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: “Gabriel (peace be upon him) informed me that an angel of Allah’s angels had a great station with Allah, Mighty and Majestic, then He became angry with him and he was made to descend from heaven to earth. He came to Idris (peace be upon him) and said: ‘You have a station with Allah; intercede for me with your Lord.’ So he prayed for three nights without slackening, and he fasted their days without breaking, then he asked Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in the pre-dawn, concerning the angel. The angel said: ‘Your request has been granted, and my wing has been released for me, and I love to recompense you; ask me for a need.’ He said: ‘Show me the Angel of Death so that perhaps I may find familiarity with him, for nothing pleases me while his mention is with me.’ So he spread his wing and said: ‘Mount!’ Then he ascended with him seeking the Angel of Death in the lowest heaven. It was said to him: ‘Ascend!’ So he encountered him between the fourth and the fifth heaven. The angel said: ‘O Angel of Death, why do I see you frowning?’ He said: ‘How wondrous! I was under the shade of the Throne where I was commanded to seize the soul of a human between the fourth and the fifth heaven.’ Idris (peace be upon him) heard, and he was agitated, and he fell from the angel’s wing, and he seized his soul in that place; and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘And We raised him high in heaven.’”

99-/6906: ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Muhammad b. Abi ‘Umayr, from one who narrated to him, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Indeed Allah, blessed and exalted, became angry with an angel from among the angels, so He cut off his wing and cast him on an island from among the islands of the sea, and he remained as long as Allah willed in that sea. When Allah sent Idris (peace be upon him), that angel came to him and said: ‘O Prophet of Allah, supplicate to Allah for me that He be pleased with me and restore my wing to me.’ He said: ‘Yes.’ Then Idris (peace be upon him) supplicated for him, so He restored his wing to him and was pleased with him. The angel said to Idris: ‘Do you have a need with me?’ He said: ‘Yes, I love that you raise me to heaven so that I may look upon the Angel of Death, for there is no life for me with his remembrance.’ So the angel took him upon his wing until he reached the fourth heaven. Then the Angel of Death was moving his head in amazement. Idris greeted the Angel of Death and said to him: ‘Why do you move your head?’ He said: ‘The Lord of Might commanded me to seize your soul between the fourth and the fifth heaven. So I said: “My Lord, how is this, when the thickness of the fourth heaven is a journey of five hundred years, and from the fourth heaven to the third heaven is a journey of five hundred years, and the thickness of the third heaven is five hundred years, and from the third heaven to the second heaven is a journey of five hundred years, and each heaven and what is between them is likewise—so how can this be?”’ Then he seized his soul between the fourth and the fifth heaven, and it is His saying: ‘And We raised him high in heaven.’” He said: “And he was named Idris due to the abundance of his studying the books.” [1]

99-/6907: And from him: from his father, from Muhammad b. Abi ‘Umayr, from Hisham b. Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), from the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) in the story of the Night Journey, he (blessings be upon him and his family) said: “Then I ascended to the fourth heaven, and there was a man in it. I said: ‘Who is this, O Gabriel?’ He said: ‘This is Idris—Allah raised him to a high place.’ So I greeted him and he greeted me, and I asked forgiveness for him and he asked forgiveness for me.”

Qur’an 19:58-63 (M. H. Shakir): These are they on whom Allah bestowed favors, from among the prophets of the offspring of Adam, and of those whom We carried with Nuh, and of the offspring of Ibrahim and Israel, and of those whom We guided and chose; when the communications of the Beneficent God were recited to them, they fell down making obeisance and weeping. But there came after them an evil generation, who neglected prayers and followed sensual desires, so they shall meet perdition, Except him who repents and believes and does good; so these are they who shall enter the garden, and they shall not be dealt with a jot unjustly: The gardens of perpetuity which the Beneficent God has promised to His servants while unseen; surely His promise shall come to pass. They shall not hear therein any vain discourse, but only: Peace; and they shall have their sustenance therein morning and evening. This is the garden which We cause those of Our servants to inherit who guard (against evil).

/6908 _1: ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: His saying, exalted is He: “Then there succeeded after them a خلف (khalaf)”—and it is the base/evil ones [2]—and the proof of that is His saying, exalted is He: “they neglected prayers and followed desires, so they shall meet perdition.” Then the Mighty and Majestic made an exception and said: “Except him who repents and believes and does good; so these are they who shall enter the garden, and they shall not be dealt with a jot unjustly.”
