The Imam's (a.s.) Letter to the People of Basra

نامه نوشتن آن حضرت به اهل بصره

چهارم: طلب كردن ياري آن جناب بود به نوشتن خط به سوي اهل بصره به رسالت ابورزين، و مضمون آن خط بعد از ابتداي بسم‌الله، آن بود كه: اين خطي است از حسين بن علي (عليه‌السلام) به سوي اشراف و بزرگان بصره، بدرستي كه من مي‌خوانم شما را به سوي خدا، و رسول (صلي الله عليه و آله)، چون در اين ايام سنت پيغمبر (صلي الله عليه و آله) از ميان رفته است، پس اگر اجابت نمائيد دعوت مرا، و اطاعت كنيد امر مرا، هدايت يابيد به سوي رشد خود، و السلام.و چون خط آن جناب به ايشان رسيد، يزيد بن مسعود جماعت بني‌تميم و بني‌حنظله و بني‌سعد راجمع كرد، پس خطبه خواند، و ايشان را موعظه كرد، پس گفت: اينك حسين (عليه‌السلام) پسر رسول‌خدا كه صاحب شرف و عقل و فضل و نجابت است، و در علم و كمال، ثاني و تالي ندارد، و حجت خدا به سبب آن جناب بر شما تمام است، شما در واقعه‌ي جنگ جمل گناهكار شديد به خروج بر اميرالمؤمنين (عليه‌السلام) پس آن گناهان را بشوئيد از خود بياري كردن فرزند رسول‌خدا، پس ايشان اجابت كردند، و عزم نمودند بخروج، پس چون مهيا شدند خبر شهادت حضرت به ايشان رسيد. The Imam's (a.s.) Letter to the People of Basra

The fourth instance of the Imam's (a.s.) seeking support was by writing a letter to the people of Basra and sending it through Abu Razin.

The contents of that letter, after beginning with

«بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم»,

“In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful,”

were as follows:

“This is a letter from Imam Husain (a.s.) ibn Ali (a.s.) to the nobles and leaders of Basra.

Indeed, I call you toward Allah and His Messenger (s.a.w.a.), for in these days the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) has been abandoned.

Therefore, if you answer my call and obey my command, you will be guided to your right course.

والسلام

And peace be upon you.”

When the Imam’s (a.s.) letter reached them, Yazid ibn Masʿud gathered together the tribes of Banu Tamim, Banu Hanzalah, and Banu Saʿd.

He delivered a sermon and admonished them.

Then he said:

“Here is Imam Husain (a.s.), the son of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), the possessor of nobility, wisdom, virtue, and excellence.

In knowledge and perfection he has no equal or second.

Through him the proof of Allah has been completed against you.

You committed a sin during the Battle of Jamal by rising against Amir al-Muʾminin (a.s.).

Now wash away those sins by supporting the son of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.).”

They responded positively and resolved to set out.

However, when they had completed their preparations, news of the martyrdom of the Imam (a.s.) reached them. [937]
