Qur’an 21:87 (M. H. Shakir): And Yunus, when he went away in wrath, so he thought that We would not straiten him, so he called out in the darkness: There is no god but Thou, glory be to Thee; surely I am of those who make themselves to suffer loss.

Translation: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: He is Yunus; and “Dha al-Nun” means “the one of the fish.”

Translation: Ibn Babawayh said: Tamim ibn ‘Abdillah ibn Tamim al-Qurashi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to me, from Hamdan ibn Sulayman al-Naysaburi, from ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Jahm, from al-Rida (peace be upon him), regarding what al-Ma’mun asked him about the infallibility of [the Prophets].

Translation: Al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: “That is Yunus son of Matta (peace be upon him). He went away angry with his people, and he thought—in the sense of being certain—that We would not decree hardship upon him, that is, We would not straiten his provision. Of it is the saying of Allah, the Exalted: And as for when He tries him and straitens for him his means of subsistence [1], meaning He constricted and tightened it. So he called out in the darknesses—namely, the darkness of night, the darkness of the sea, and the darkness of the belly of the fish: There is no god but You; glory be to You; surely I am of the wrongdoers—because I left off such worship as You had set me free for in the belly of the fish. Allah answered him, and He, the Exalted, said: Were it not that he was one of those who glorify Allah, he would certainly have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised [2].”

Qur’an 89:16 (M. H. Shakir): And as for when He tries him and straitens for him his means of subsistence.

Qur’an 37:143-144 (M. H. Shakir): But had he not been of those who glorify (Us), he would certainly have tarried in its belly to the day when they are raised.

Translation: Al-Ma’mun said: “May Allah reward you, O Abu al-Hasan.”

Translation: And from him, he said: Ahmad ibn Ziyad ibn Ja‘far al-Hamadani (may Allah be pleased with him), al-Husayn ibn Ibrahim ibn Ahmad ibn Hisham, and ‘Ali ibn ‘Abdullah al-Warraq (may Allah be pleased with him) told us; they said: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn Hashim told us; he said: al-Qasim ibn Muhammad al-Barmaki told us; he said: Abu al-Salt al-Harawi told us, from al-Rida (peace be upon him), concerning what he answered ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Jahm regarding the infallibility of the prophets. He said to him: O son of the Messenger of Allah, do you affirm the infallibility of the prophets? He said: “Yes. So say what you know.” He mentioned the verses until he said: And His saying, Mighty and Majestic: And the man of the fish when he went off in anger and thought that We would not straiten him. He (peace be upon him) said: “As for His saying, Mighty and Majestic: And the man of the fish when he went off in anger and thought that We would not straiten him—it means he thought, in the sense of being certain, that Allah would not straiten his provision. Do you not hear the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: And as for when He tries him and straitens for him his means of subsistence [3], meaning He straitens it for him? And had he thought that Allah would not have power over him, he would indeed have disbelieved.”

Qur’an 89:16 (M. H. Shakir): And as for when He tries him and straitens for him his means of subsistence.

Translation: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father told me, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from ‘Abdullah ibn Sayyar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) was in the house of Umm Salamah on her night.” She missed him from the bed, and what comes over women came over her; so she rose seeking him in the corners of the house until she came upon him, and he was in a corner of the house standing with his hands raised, weeping, and saying: “O Allah, never strip from me the good You have given me. And never entrust me to my own self for the blink of an eye. O Allah, never let an enemy or a hater gloat over me. O Allah, never return me to an evil from which You have delivered me.” Umm Salamah turned away weeping until the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) turned to her because of her weeping, and he said to her: “What makes you weep, O Umm Salamah?” She said: “May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah—why should I not weep, when you are in the station that you are with Allah, and Allah has forgiven you what preceded of your sin and what will follow, yet you ask Him never to let an enemy gloat over you ever, and never to entrust you to your own self for the blink of an eye ever, and never to return you to an evil from which He delivered you ever, and never to strip from you the good He has given you ever?” He said: “O Umm Salamah, and what secures me? Indeed Allah only entrusted Yunus son of Matta to his own self for the blink of an eye, and what happened, happened.””

Then you will be granted a child, if Allah, the Exalted, wills.”
