Translation:

Then ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: Ahmad ibn Idris informed us, saying: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa narrated to me, from ‘Ali ibn al-Hakam, from al-Husayn ibn Abi al-‘Ala’, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “There is not one of you but will come to it (al-Wariduha).”

He said: Do you not hear a man say, “We came to the water of the clan of so-and-so”? That is the wurud (coming to) [1], and he did not enter it.

(Qur’an 19:73, 98 — M. H. Shakir)

“And when Our clear communications are recited to them, those who disbelieve say to those who believe: Which of the two parties is best in abiding and best in assembly?” (19:73)

“…Or can you hear a single sound from them?” (19:98)

Translation:

Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Salamah ibn al-Khattab, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And when Our clear communications are recited to them, those who disbelieve say to those who believe: Which of the two parties is best in station and best in assembly?” He said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah upon him and his family) summoned Quraysh to our wilayah, and they recoiled and denied. Those among Quraysh who disbelieved said to those who believed—those who acknowledged the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) and us, the People of the House—“Which of the two parties is best in station and best in assembly?” in mockery of them. So Allah replied to them: “And how many a generation before them did We destroy from among the past nations who were better in furnishings and outward appearance.”

I said: His saying, “Say: As for him who is in error, the Beneficent will surely prolong his span” (Qur’an 19:75 — Shakir): He said: All of them were in error—they did not believe in the wilayah of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) nor in our wilayah—so they were astray and leading others astray. He prolongs for them in their misguidance and transgression until they die; then He makes them worse in place and weaker in forces.

I said: His saying, “Until when they see what they are threatened with, either the punishment or the hour, then they shall know who is worse in place and weaker in forces” (Qur’an 19:75 — Shakir): He said: As for His saying “until when they see what they are threatened with,” it is the emergence of the Qa’im (peace be upon him), and the Hour. They will know on that day what has descended upon them from Allah at the hands of His wali [2]. That is His saying, “who is worse in place,” meaning with the Qa’im (peace be upon him), “and weaker in forces.”

(Qur’an 19:76 — M. H. Shakir)

“And Allah increases in guidance those who go aright…”

Translation:

I said: His saying, “And Allah increases in guidance those who go aright”? He said: On that day He increases them in guidance upon guidance, by their following the Qa’im (peace be upon him), for they will not reject him nor deny him.

(Qur’an 19:87 — M. H. Shakir)

“They shall not control intercession, save he who has made a covenant with the Beneficent Allah.”

Translation:

He said: Except the one who worships Allah upon the wilayah of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) and the Imams after him—that is the covenant with Allah.

(Qur’an 19:96 — M. H. Shakir)

“Surely (as for) those who believe and do good deeds, for them will the Beneficent Allah bring about love.”

Translation:

He said: The wilayah of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) is the love which Allah, Exalted, mentioned.

(Qur’an 19:97 — M. H. Shakir)

“So We have only made it easy in your tongue that you may give good news thereby to those who guard (against evil) and warn thereby a vehemently contentious people.”

Translation:

He said: Allah only made it easy upon his tongue when He raised up the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) as a standard; by him he gave good news to the believers and warned the disbelievers—those whom Allah mentioned in His Book as “ludd,” meaning disbelievers.

(Qur’an 19:74 — M. H. Shakir)

“And how many of the generations have We destroyed before them who were better in respect of possessions and outward appearance!”

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, regarding His saying: “And how many of the generations have We destroyed before them who were better in respect of possessions and outward appearance!” said: By it He meant clothing, food, and drink.

(Qur’an 19:76 — Shakir) “And Allah increases in guidance those who go aright…”

(Qur’an 19:76 — Shakir) “And the ever-abiding good deeds are best with your Lord in reward and best in outcome.”

Translation:

And in the narration of Abu al-Jarud from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), he said: “Athath means goods (property), and as for ri’ya, it is beauty and a fair appearance.” He said: And His saying, “And Allah increases in guidance those who go aright,” is a refutation of whoever claims that faith neither increases nor decreases. And His saying, “And the everlasting good deeds are best with your Lord in reward and best in return,” he said: The abiding good deeds are the believer’s saying: Subhanallah, and al-hamdu lillah, and la ilaha illa Allah, and Allahu akbar.

Then ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Jamil, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings upon him and his family) said: When I was taken by night to the heaven, I entered Paradise and saw it as shining, brilliant plains [1]. I saw angels building with a brick of gold and a brick of silver, and sometimes they would stop. I said to them, “What is with you—sometimes you build and sometimes you stop?” They said, “Until the provision comes to us.” I said to them, “And what is your provision?” They said, “The believer’s words in the world: Subhanallah, al-hamdu lillah, la ilaha illa Allah, and Allahu akbar. When he says them, we build; and when he refrains, we refrain.”

And from him, he said: My father narrated to me, from Hammad, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: The Prophet (blessings upon him and his family) said: When I was taken by night to the heaven I entered Paradise, and I saw therein brilliant plains, and I saw angels building with a brick of gold and a brick of silver—and he continued the narration [2].

Translation:

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Hammad, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): The Messenger of Allah (blessings upon him and his family) said: When I was taken by night to the heaven I entered Paradise, and I saw a palace of a red ruby; its inside could be seen from its outside and its outside from its inside due to its radiance. In it were structures of pearls and chrysolite. I said, “O Jibril, for whom is this palace?” He said: It is for one who makes his speech good, maintains fasting, feeds others, and stands in prayer by night while people sleep.

The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: O Messenger of Allah, is there anyone in your community who can manage this? He said: Come near me, O ‘Ali. He drew near, and he said: Do you know what “making one’s speech good” is? He said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: It is for one to say: Subhanallah, al-hamdu lillah, la ilaha illa Allah, and Allahu akbar. Then he said: Do you know what maintaining fasting is? He said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: It is for one to fast the month of Ramadan and not break a single day of it. And do you know what feeding others is? He said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: It is for one to seek for his dependents that by which he spares their faces from people (asking). And do you know what standing by night while people sleep is? He said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: It is for one not to sleep until he performs the final night prayer (‘Isha). And by “people sleep” he meant the Jews and Christians, for they sleep between the two (Maghrib and ‘Isha).

(Qur’an 19:77–82 — M. H. Shakir)

“Have you, then, seen him who disbelieves in Our communications and says: I shall certainly be given wealth and children? Has he gained knowledge of the unseen, or made a covenant with the Beneficent Allah? By no means! We write down what he says, and We will lengthen to him the length of the chastisement, and We will inherit of him what he says, and he shall come to Us alone. And they have taken gods besides Allah, that they should be to them a glory. By no means! They shall soon deny their worshipping them, and they shall be adversaries to them.”

Translation:

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: And in the narration of Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, “Have you seen him who disbelieves in Our signs and says, ‘I shall certainly be given wealth and children’”: This was that al-‘As ibn Wa’il al-Qurashi, then al-Sahmi, one of the mockers. Khabbab ibn al-Aratt had a claim over al-‘As ibn Wa’il, so he came to demand it. Al-‘As said to him: Do you not allege that in Paradise there are gold, silver, and silk? He said: Yes. He said: Then our appointment is Paradise; by Allah, I shall be given there better than what I was given in the world. Allah says: “Has he gained knowledge of the unseen, or taken a covenant with the Beneficent? By no means…” up to: “…and they shall be adversaries to them.” And “adversary” (al-didd) means the companion who is coupled with him [2].

He said: On the Day of Resurrection—that is, those whom they took as gods besides Allah will be adversaries against them on the Day of Resurrection, and they will disown them and their worship until the Day of Resurrection.

(Qur’an 19:83–84 — M. H. Shakir)

“Do you not see that We have sent the Shayatin against the unbelievers, inciting them to incite? Therefore be not in haste against them, We only number out to them a number (of days).”

Translation:

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim: His saying, “Surely We have sent the devils against the disbelievers, inciting them vehemently.” He said: When they transgressed in it and in its trial, and in their obedience (to falsehood), He extended for them in their rebellion and misguidance, and He sent upon them the devils of humans and jinn: “inciting them vehemently,” meaning they urge them strongly and incite them to obey them and worship them. So Allah said: “Do not hasten against them; We are only counting for them”—that is, in their rebellion, their trial, and their disbelief.

“Therefore be not in haste against them, We only number out to them a number (of days).”

Translation:

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim also said: It was revealed concerning those who withhold the khums, the zakat, and good (charity). Allah sends over them a ruler or a devil, and he spends what is due from him of zakat and khums in other than the obedience of Allah, and Allah punishes him for that. And His saying, “Do not be hasty against them; We are only counting for them,” he said to me: “What is it according to you?” I said: Counting the days. He said: No—fathers and mothers can reckon that; rather, it is the number of breaths.

Translation:

Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Mahbub, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Madani, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings upon him and his family) was asked about Allah’s saying, “On the day We gather the Godwary to the Beneficent as a delegation.” He said: O ‘Ali, a “delegation” is only mounted. They are men who were Godwary, so Allah, Exalted be His remembrance, loved them, chose them, and was pleased with their deeds; so He named them “the Godwary.” Then he said to him: O ‘Ali, by Him who split the seed and created the soul, they will come out of their graves, and the angels will meet them with she-camels of might, upon them are saddles of gold, adorned with pearls and rubies; their coverings are brocade and fine silk, and their bridles are braided purple cords. They fly with them to the Gathering. With each man among them are a thousand angels—before him, on his right, and on his left—escorting them until they reach them to the Greatest Gate of Paradise… [continues as in Arabic including the pure drink, the life-spring, the command to admit them directly to Paradise, the welcome of the houris and human spouses, the description of the lofty chambers and exalted couches, the crowns, garments, and adornments, with the cited verses.]
