Ibrahim Ayah 24-26

[Ibrahim 14:24-26, M. H. Shakir]

Have you not considered how Allah sets forth a parable of a good word (being) like a good tree, whose root is firm and whose branches are in heaven, yielding its fruit in every season by the permission of its Lord? And Allah sets forth parables for men that they may be mindful. And the parable of an evil word is as an evil tree pulled up from the earth’s surface; it has no stability.

99-/5709 _5- Translation:

Abu Basir, from Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him): When it is the Day of Resurrection, Iblis will be brought in seventy shackles and seventy chains. Then he will look at Zufar in one hundred and twenty chains and one hundred and twenty shackles. Iblis will look and say: Who is this for whom Allah has doubled the punishment, while I led all these creatures astray? It will be said: This is Zufar. He will say: For what has this punishment been fixed for him? It will be said: For his transgression against Ali (peace be upon him). Iblis will say to him: Woe to you and ruin to you! Did you not know that Allah commanded me to prostrate to Adam and I disobeyed Him, and I asked Him to grant me authority over Muhammad and his Household and their Shia, but He did not grant me that and said: “Surely as for My servants, you have no authority over them except those who follow you, the deviators.” [al-Hijr 15:42, M. H. Shakir] Surely as for My servants, you have no authority over them except those who follow you, the deviators. And I did not recognize them when He excepted them, when I said: “and Thou shalt not find most of them thankful.” [al-A‘raf 7:17, M. H. Shakir] Then I shall certainly come to them from before them and from behind them, and from their right-hand and from their left-hand; and Thou shalt not find most of them thankful. Your soul deceived you with vain desire, so you are made to stand before all creation. Then he (Iblis) will say to him: What was it that you did against Ali and against the people who followed you upon opposition? The devil—who is Zufar—will say to Iblis: You commanded me to do that. Iblis will say to him: Then why did you disobey your Lord and obey me? Zufar will reply to him with what Allah said: “Surely Allah promised you the promise of truth; and I promised you, then failed to keep my promise to you, and I had no authority over you…” to the end of the verse. [Ibrahim 14:22, M. H. Shakir] And the Shaitan shall say after the matter is decided: Surely Allah promised you the promise of truth; and I promised you, then failed to keep my promise to you, and I had no authority over you except that I called you and you obeyed me, therefore do not blame me but blame yourselves; I cannot be your aider, nor can you be my aiders; surely I disbelieved in your associating me with Allah before; surely it is the unjust that shall have the painful punishment.

Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: A number of our companions, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from ‘Ali b. Sayf, from his father, from ‘Amr b. Hurayth, said: I asked Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, the Exalted: “like a good tree, whose root is firm and whose branches are in heaven.” He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is its root; the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) is its branch; the Imams from their progeny are its boughs; the knowledge of the Imams is its fruit; and their believing Shia are its leaves. Is there anything extraneous in it? I said: No, by Allah. He said: By Allah, when a believer is born a leaf sprouts upon it, and when a believer dies a leaf falls from it.

99-/5716 _7- Translation:

‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from al-Hasan b. Mahbub, from Abu Ja‘far al-Ahwal, from Salam b. al-Mustaneer, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about the saying of Allah: “a parable of a good word…” He said: The tree is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and its root is his lineage, firm among Banu Hashim; the branch of the tree is ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him); the bough of the tree is Fatimah (peace be upon her); its fruit are the Imams from the offspring of ‘Ali and Fatimah (peace be upon them); and their Shia are its leaves. Indeed, a believer from our Shia dies and a leaf falls from the tree, and a believer is born and the tree produces a leaf. I said: What do you say about His saying, Exalted is He, “it yields its fruit in every season by the permission of its Lord”? He said: It means what the Imams issue as legal rulings to their Shia in every Hajj and ‘Umrah concerning the lawful and the unlawful. Then Allah struck a parable for the enemies of the Family of Muhammad, saying: “And the parable of an evil word is as an evil tree pulled up from the earth’s surface; it has no stability.” [Ibrahim 14:26, M. H. Shakir, second sentence quoted above]

99-/5720 _11- Translation:

From Muhammad b. Yazid, who said: I asked Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah: “and its branches are in heaven.” He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is its root, and the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) is its branch; the Imams from their progeny are its boughs; the knowledge of the Imams is its fruit; and their Shia are its leaves. Do you see anything extraneous in it? I said: No, by Allah. He said: By Allah, a believer dies and a leaf falls from that tree, and one is born and a leaf sprouts in it. I said: “it yields its fruit in every season by the permission of its Lord.” He said: It means what goes out to the people of the knowledge of the Imam whenever he is asked about it.

Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from a number of our companions, from Sahl b. Ziyad, from ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Najran, from ‘Asim b. Humayd, from Abu Basir, who said: I heard Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: When a man is placed in his grave, two angels come to him, an angel at his right and an angel at his left, and Satan is set up between his eyes, his eyes being of copper. He is told: What do you say about the man who was among you? He said: He is seized with a fright. If he is a believer, he says: Is it about Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), that you two are asking me? They say to him: Sleep a sleep with no dream in it. His grave is expanded for him to nine cubits, and he sees his seat in Paradise—and this is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “Allah confirms those who believe with the sure word in this world’s life and in the hereafter.” And if he is an unbeliever, they say to him: Who is this man who appeared among you? He says: I do not know. So they leave him to the Satan.

This hadith was narrated by al-Husayn b. Sa‘id in the Book (al-Zuhd). He said: Al-Nadr b. Suwayd narrated to us, from ‘Asim b. Humayd, from Abu Basir, who said: I heard Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “When a man is placed in his grave…” and he transmitted the hadith to its end.
