Assembly of Mourning

Sick, bound in chains, clothed in rags, upon an unsaddled camel— Who has ever seen one so distressed in the streets and marketplaces?

Like the moon, the face of the son of Zahra (a.s.) upon the tip of a spear— Who has ever seen such a spectacle displayed before the marketplace?

Blood drips from the litter while people gather to watch; Who has ever seen a Zaynab (a.s.) and such overwhelming affliction?

Delicate feet, the thorns of the desert shrub, and the road to Syria— Who has ever seen the faces of children fallen upon thorns?

Like the rosy cheeks of the orphans of Hijaz, Who has ever seen faces bruised blue from the blows of the wicked?

Now Kufa, then Syria, and at times the monasteries of the Christians— Who besides the family of Ali (a.s.) has ever endured so much torment?

The young daughter of Zahra (a.s.), while others desired to enslave her— Who has ever seen such a gathering in the court of the son of Hind, the liver-eater?

A golden tray, ruby-like lips, and the tyrant’s staff of oppression— Who has ever seen a precious ruby ground and struck in such a manner?

The burning heart of “Hayran” grieves for the Master of Martyrs (a.s.); Who has ever seen such an assembly of mourning and such immense sorrow?
