Ayats of Quran

“Surely (as for) those who love that scandal should circulate respecting those who believe, they shall have a painful chastisement in this world and the hereafter; and Allah knows, while you do not know.” (Surah al-Nur 24:19)

“And do not spy...” (Surah al-Hujurat 49:12)

1- In the will of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) to Ali (a.s.), he said to his companions: “Shall I inform you of the worst among you?”

They replied: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.”

He said: “Those who carry tales and spread gossip, who separate between loved ones, and who seek out faults in innocent people.”

2- Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said: “Whoever speaks about a believer concerning what his own eyes have seen and his own ears have heard is among those about whom Allah says:

﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَنْ تَشِيعَ الْفاحِشَةُ فِي الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَهُمْ عَذابٌ أَلِيمٌ فِي الدُّنْيا وَ الْآخِرَةِ﴾

‘Surely (as for) those who love that scandal should circulate respecting those who believe, they shall have a painful chastisement in this world and the hereafter.’ (Surah al-Nur 24:19)

3- The Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) said: “Indeed, whoever hears of an indecent act and then spreads it is like the one who committed it.”

4- The Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) said: “There were people in Madinah who had faults, but they remained silent regarding the faults of others, so Allah caused people to remain silent regarding their faults. They died with no faults known among the people.

And there were people in Madinah who had no faults, yet they spoke about the faults of others. So Allah exposed faults in them, and they continued to be known by those faults until they died.”

5- The Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) said: “Do not rejoice at your brother’s misfortune, lest Allah have mercy on him and test you instead.”

6- The Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) said: “Do not rejoice at your brother’s misfortune, lest Allah have mercy on him and test you instead.”

7- Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) was asked regarding the statement of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.):

عَوْرَةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِ حَرَامٌ

(The private matters of a believer are forbidden to another believer).”

He (a.s.) said: “It does not mean that part of his body becomes uncovered and is seen. Rather, it means narrating things about him and exposing his faults.”

8- Hudhayfah ibn Mansur said:

“I said to Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.):

‘There is something people say:

عَوْرَةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِ حَرَامٌ

(The private matters of a believer are forbidden to another believer).’

He (a.s.) replied: ‘It is not as you think. Rather, the private matter of a believer is that you hear him say something for which he may be criticized, then you preserve it in order to reproach him with it one day when you become angry.’”

10- Abu Burdah said:

“The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) led us in prayer. Then he left quickly until he reached the door of the mosque and placed his hand upon it. He then called out in a loud voice:

‘O people who have believed with their tongues but whose faith has not yet entered their hearts! Do not seek out the faults and hidden matters of the believers. For whoever seeks out the faults of the believers, Allah will seek out his faults. And whoever has his faults sought out by Allah, Allah will disgrace him, even if he is inside the depths of his own house.’”

11- Muhammad ibn al-Fudayl said: “I said to Imam Musa al-Kazim (a.s.):

‘May I be your ransom, sometimes I hear something about one of my believing brothers that I dislike. When I ask him about it, he denies it, even though trustworthy people have informed me of it.’

He (a.s.) said:

‘O Muhammad! Reject what your ears and eyes tell you about your brother. Even if fifty people testify against him and he himself tells you otherwise, believe him and reject them. Do not spread anything about him that would disgrace him or destroy his honor, lest you become among those about whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says:

﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَنْ تَشِيعَ الْفاحِشَةُ فِي الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَهُمْ عَذابٌ أَلِيمٌ فِي الدُّنْيا وَ الْآخِرَةِ﴾

‘Surely (as for) those who love that scandal should circulate respecting those who believe, they shall have a painful chastisement in this world and the hereafter.’ (Surah al-Nur 24:19)’”

12- Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) said:

“Whoever publicizes an indecent act is like the one who initiated it. And whoever reproaches a believer for a fault will not die until he himself falls into that same fault.”

13- Imam al-Baqir (a.s.) said:

“The closest a servant comes to disbelief is that he befriends a man on account of religion, then keeps track of his slips and mistakes in order to rebuke him with them one day.”

14- Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said:

“When you see a person searching for the sins of others while forgetting his own sins, then know that he has been deceived.”

15- Imam al-Baqir (a.s.) said that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) said:

“The reward that comes most quickly for a good deed is that of kindness, and the punishment that comes most quickly for an evil deed is oppression.

It is sufficient as a fault for a person that he sees faults in others while being blind to the same faults in himself; that he criticizes people for what he himself cannot avoid; and that he harms his companion with matters that do not concern him.”

16- Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said: “Whoever becomes aware of a sin or fault of a believer and then publicizes it, instead of concealing it and seeking Allah’s forgiveness for him, will be considered by Allah as though he himself committed that sin. The burden of spreading it will be upon him, while the one who committed the sin may be forgiven. The punishment for the sinner was exposed in this world through his disclosure, but it will be concealed from him in the Hereafter. Allah is too generous to punish him again for it in the Hereafter.

And whoever narrates something about a believer intending to disgrace him, destroy his honor, and cause him to fall in the eyes of people, Allah removes him from His guardianship and places him under the guardianship of Shaytan—and even Shaytan will not accept him.”

17- Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said: “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has placed forty protective veils over His believing servant. Whenever he commits a major sin, one of those veils is removed.

If he then reproaches his believing brother for a fault he knows about him, all those veils are removed, leaving him exposed without any covering. He becomes disgraced in the heavens upon the tongues of the angels and on the earth upon the tongues of people. Thereafter, whenever he commits a sin, it is mentioned and publicized.

The angels entrusted with him say: ‘Our Lord, Your servant has become exposed and disgraced, yet You commanded us to protect him.’ Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘My angels, had I intended good for this servant, I would not have exposed him. Remove your wings from him. By My Honour, after this he will never return to goodness.’”

18- Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said: “A believer is more truthful against himself than seventy believers testifying against him.”

19- Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said:“Do not show joy at your brother’s misfortune, lest Allah have mercy on him and make the same affliction befall you.” And he (a.s.) said: “Whoever rejoices at a calamity that befalls his brother will not leave this world until he himself is tested with a similar affliction.”

21- The Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) said:

“O people who have accepted Islam with their tongues, but whose faith has not yet entered their hearts! Do not criticize Muslims and do not search for their faults. For whoever searches for their faults, Allah will search for his faults; and whoever has his faults searched out by Allah, Allah will disgrace him, even if he is inside his own house.”
