I said, “I do not believe anything of what you have said.” So the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to him, “Woe to you! Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, tried a people on account of their sins; He caused them to die before the appointed terms that had been set for them, then He returned them to the world so they might complete their allotted sustenance, then He caused them to die after that.” He said: This weighed heavily on Ibn al-Kawwā’ and he could not grasp it, so the Commander of the Faithful said to him, “Woe to you! Do you not know that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said in His Book: ‘And Musa chose out of his people seventy men for Our appointment…’ so he set off with them to bear witness for him, when they would return to the assembly among the Children of Israel, that ‘My Lord has spoken to me.’ Had they accepted that for him and believed him, it would have been better for them. But they said to Musa (peace be upon him): ‘We will not believe in you until we see Allah openly.’ Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘So the thunderbolt overtook you—meaning death—while you looked on. Then We raised you up after your death that you might give thanks.’ Do you see, O Ibn al-Kawwā’, that these returned to their homes after they had died?” He said: “What is this? Did He then cause them to die right there?” He said to him, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): “No, woe to you! Has He not informed you in the Book of Allah where He says: ‘And We made the clouds to give shade over you and We sent to you manna and quails’? This was after death, when He raised them up.”

And Musa chose out of his people seventy men for Our appointment. [Shakir, Al-A‘raf 7:155]

And when you said: O Musa! we will not believe in you until we see Allah manifestly, so the punishment overtook you while you looked on. Then We raised you up after your death that you may give thanks. [Shakir, Al-Baqarah 2:55-56]

And We made the clouds to give shade over you and We sent to you manna and quails. [Shakir, Al-Baqarah 2:57]

And We made the clouds to give shade over you and We sent to you manna and quails; eat of the good things We have given you; and they did not do Us any harm, but they did injustice to their own souls. [Shakir, Al-Baqarah 2:57]

99-/480 _1- Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: And remember—O Children of Israel—when We shaded you with the clouds while you were in the wilderness, the heat of the sun and the cold of the night would strike you; and We sent down to you the manna—taranjabīn—which would fall upon your trees and you would take it; and the salwā—al-summānā—a bird, the most delicious of birds in meat, which would come freely to them so they could catch it.”

Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to them: “Eat of the good things We have provided you, and be grateful for My favor. Magnify those whom I have magnified, and honor those whom I have honored—those for whom I took from you covenants and pledges—for Muhammad and his pure family.” Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “They did not wrong Us when they altered, and said other than what they were commanded, and did not fulfill what they had pledged; for the disbelief of the disbeliever does not diminish Our sovereignty and dominion, just as the faith of the believer does not increase Our sovereignty. Rather, they were wronging their own souls by persisting in their disbelief and alteration.” Then he [peace be upon him] said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: Servants of Allah! You must hold the belief in our wilayah, we the People of the House, and do not make division among us. Consider how Allah has granted you breadth by clarifying the proof for you to make the knowledge of truth easy for you; then He granted you breadth in taqiyyah so that you may be safe from the evils of people. Then, if you alter and change, He offers you repentance and accepts it from you. So be thankful for the favors of Allah.”

99-/483 _4- Al-Shaykh, mursal, from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him), said: “Morning sleep is ill-omened: it drives away sustenance, yellows the complexion, makes it ugly and alters it; it is the sleep of every ill-omened person. Indeed Allah, Exalted, apportions livelihoods between the rise of dawn and sunrise. Beware of that sleep. Manna and quails would descend upon the Children of Israel between the rise of dawn and sunrise; so whoever slept at that hour, his share would not descend. Then when he woke and did not see his share, he needed to ask and seek.”

Qādim, from Sulaymān, from Zurārah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And they did not wrong Us, but they were wronging their own souls.” He said: “Allah is too great, too mighty, too exalted, and too inviolable to be wronged. But He associated us with Himself, so He made our being wronged His being wronged, and our wilayah His wilayah, where He says: ‘Only Allah is your wali and His Messenger and those who believe’—meaning the Imams from us.” Then he said elsewhere: “And they did not wrong Us, but they were wronging their own souls,” and he mentioned the like of it.

99-/485 _6- From him: from ‘Alī b. Muhammad, from some of our companions, from Ibn Maḥbūb, from Muhammad b. al-Fuḍayl, from Abū al-Hasan al-Māḍī (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “And they did not wrong Us, but they were wronging their own souls.” He said: “Allah is too mighty and too inviolable to be wronged, or to ascribe wrongdoing to Himself; but Allah associated us with Himself, so He made our being wronged His being wronged, and our wilayah His wilayah. Then He sent down about that Qur’an to His Prophet (Allah bless him and his family), and said: ‘And We did not wrong them, but they were wronging their own souls.’” I said: “Is this [a matter of] revelation?” He said: “Yes.”

And We did them no injustice, but they were unjust to themselves. [Shakir, Al-Nahl 16:118]

99-/486 _7- ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm—in the meaning of the verse—[said]: When Musa crossed the sea with the Children of Israel, they descended into a wilderness. They said: “O Musa, you have destroyed us and killed us and brought us out from settled land into a waste with no shade, no trees, and no water.” By day a cloud would come to shade them from the sun, and by night the manna would descend and fall upon vegetation, trees, and stone, and they would eat it. In the evening a roasted bird would come to them and alight upon their tables; when they had eaten and drunk, it would fly away and depart. Musa had with him a stone which he would place in the middle of the camp, then strike it with his staff, and twelve springs would gush forth from it—as Allah has related—so it would go to each tribe in its encampment; and they were twelve tribes.

And when We said: Enter this town, then eat from it a plenteous (food) wherever you wish, and enter the gate making obeisance, and say: Forgiveness; We will forgive you your wrongs and give more to those who do good (to others). [Shakir, Al-Baqarah 2:58]
