Ibrahim Ayah 48

99-/—: Do not say it like that; rather, they will be the dwellings of the Qa’im and his companions. Have you not heard Allah say: “And you dwelt in the dwellings of those who were unjust to themselves”? [Quran 14:45; M. H. Shakir: And you dwelt in the dwellings of those who were unjust to themselves]

99-/5786: Jameel b. Darraj said: I heard Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “And their plotting was such that the mountains might be moved thereby—and the plotting of the Banū al-‘Abbās against the Qa’im is such that the hearts of men might be made to waver by it.” [Quran 14:46; M. H. Shakir: And they have indeed planned their plan, but their plan is with Allah, though their plan was such that the mountains should pass away thereby]

99-/5787: Al-Harith, from ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him), said: “Nimrod wanted to look at the King of the heaven. He took four vultures and reared them until they became strong. He made a wooden chest and put a man in it. Then he tied the talons of the vultures to the corners of the chest and let them fly. He placed in the middle of the chest a pole, and at the top of the pole he put meat. When the vultures saw the meat, they flew, carrying the chest and the man, and they ascended toward the sky, remaining as long as Allah willed. Then the man stuck his head out of the chest and looked at the sky, and it was as it was; he looked at the earth and could see the mountains only like ants. After a while he looked at the sky—and it was as it was; he looked at the earth and he saw only water. After a while he looked at the sky—and it was as it was; he looked at the earth and he saw nothing. When the meat [1] descended to the lower part of the pole and the vultures sought the meat, the mountains heard the thunder of the vultures and feared the matter from the heaven. This is Allah’s saying: ‘And their plotting was such that the mountains might be moved thereby.’” [Quran 14:46; M. H. Shakir: And they have indeed planned their plan, but their plan is with Allah, though their plan was such that the mountains should pass away thereby]

99-/5788: The Shaykh, in his Amaali, said: Al-Husayn b. Ibrahim al-Qazwini informed us, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah Muhammad b. Wahbān narrated to us, who said: Abu al-Qasim ‘Ali b. Habashī narrated to us, who said: Abu al-Fadl al-‘Abbas b. Muhammad b. al-Husayn narrated to us, who said: my father narrated to us, who said: Safwan b. Yahya, from al-Husayn b. Abi Ghundar, from Abu Basir, said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “Fear Allah, and adhere to obedience to your Imams: say what they say and be silent about what they are silent about. For you are under the authority of those of whom Allah Most High has said: ‘And their plotting was such that the mountains might be moved thereby’—meaning by that the descendants of al-‘Abbas. So fear Allah, for you are in a truce. Pray in their clans, attend their funerals, render trusts back to them, and hold fast to the Hajj of this House—make it frequent. Indeed, by your constancy in Hajj, the distresses of this world and the terrors of the Day of Resurrection are repelled from you.” [Quran 14:46; M. H. Shakir: And they have indeed planned their plan, but their plan is with Allah, though their plan was such that the mountains should pass away thereby]

Quran 14:48; M. H. Shakir: On the day when the earth shall be changed into a different earth, and the heavens (as well), and they shall come forth to Allah, the One, the Supreme.

99-/5789: Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Sulayman b. Ja‘far, from Hisham b. Salim, from Zurara, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him). Al-Abrash al-Kalbi asked him about Allah’s word: “On the day when the earth shall be changed into a different earth.” He said: “It will be changed into a pure loaf of bread from which people will eat until the reckoning is finished.” Al-Abrash said, “I said: Surely on that day people will be too preoccupied to eat!” Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “While in the Fire they are not too preoccupied to eat dari‘ and drink boiling water even as they are being punished; so how would they be too preoccupied from it at the reckoning?” [Quran 14:48; M. H. Shakir translation given above for the verse; cf. Quran 88:6-7, 14:16 for the food and drink of Hell]

99-/5790: And from him: from a number of our companions, from Ahmad b. Abi ‘Abdillah, from his father, from al-Qasim b. ‘Urwa, from ‘Abdullah b. Bukayr, from Zurara, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about Allah’s word: “On the day when the earth shall be changed into a different earth.” He said: “It will be changed into pure bread from which people will eat until they have finished the reckoning.” Someone said to him: “Surely on that day they are too preoccupied to eat and drink!” He said: “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created the son of Adam hollow; he must have food and drink. Are they more preoccupied that day than those in the Fire who cried for relief? And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘And if they ask for relief, they shall be relieved with water like molten brass, which will scald their faces; evil the drink’.” [Quran 14:48; cf. Quran 18:29; M. H. Shakir for 18:29]

99-/5791: And from him: a number of our companions, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Khalid, from al-Hasan b. Mahbub, from Abu Hamza Thabit b. Dinar al-Thumali, and Abu Mansur, from Abu al-Rabi‘, who said: Nafi‘ asked Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him): “Inform me about Allah’s word: ‘On the day when the earth shall be changed into a different earth and the heavens’—which earth will be changed that day?” Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “An earth that remains as a loaf of bread from which they will eat until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, finishes with the reckoning.” Nafi‘ said: “Surely they are preoccupied from eating?” Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “Are they that day more preoccupied, or when they are in the Fire?” Nafi‘ said: “Rather, when they are in the Fire.” He said: “By Allah, they were not preoccupied when they called for food and were fed zaqqūm, and called for drink and were given boiling water.” He said: “You have spoken the truth, O son of the Messenger of Allah.” [Quran 14:48; cf. Quran 37:62-68; 47:15; 56:52-55]

99-/5792: Ibn Babawayh said: ‘Ali b. Ahmad b. Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, who said: Hamza b. al-Qasim al-‘Alawi narrated to us, who said: ‘Ali b. al-Husayn b. al-Junayd al-Bazzaz narrated to us, who said: Ibrahim b. Musa al-Farra’ narrated to us, who said: Muhammad b. Thawr, from Ma‘mar, from Yahya b. Abi Kathir, from ‘Abdullah b. Murrah, from Thawban: that a Jew came to the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) and said to him: “O Muhammad, I ask you—so inform me about it.” Thawban kicked him with his foot and said to him: “Say: O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “I will not call him except by what his people have named him.” He said: “What do you say about Allah’s word: ‘On the day when the earth shall be changed into a different earth and the heavens’—where will people be that day?” He said: “In darkness, short of the place of gathering.” He said: “What is the first thing the people of Paradise will eat when they enter it?” He said: “The liver of the fish.” He said: “What will be their drink after that?” He said: “Salsabīl.” He said: “You have spoken the truth, O Muhammad.” [Quran 14:48; M. Yes, by Allah: Allah will indeed create a creation without males and females who will worship Him, declare His oneness, and magnify Him; and He will create for them an earth to bear them and a heaven to shade them. Does not Allah, Mighty and Majestic, say: ‘On the day when the earth shall be changed into a different earth and the heavens,’ and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Were We then fatigued with the first creation? 99-/5795: Al-Mufid in his al-Irshad said: The noble Abu Muhammad al-Hasan b. Muhammad informed me, who said: My grandfather narrated to me, who said: al-Zubayr b. Abi Bakr narrated to me, who said: ‘Abd al-Rahman b. ‘Ubaydillah al-Zuhri narrated to me: Hisham b. ‘Abd al-Malik performed the Hajj and entered the Sacred Mosque leaning on the hand of his mawla Salim, while Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. al-Husayn (peace be upon them) was sitting in the mosque. Salim, his mawla, said to him: “O Commander of the Faithful, this is Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. al-Husayn.” Hisham said: “The one with whom the people of Iraq are infatuated?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Go to him and say to him, ‘The Commander of the Faithful says to you: What will people eat and drink until judgment is passed among them on the Day of Resurrection?’” Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “People will be gathered upon something like a pure round loaf with rivers gushing in it; they will eat and drink until the reckoning is finished.” Hisham thought he had caught him out and said: “Allah is greatest! Go to him and say: ‘What will preoccupy them from eating and drinking on that day?!’” Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said to him: “They are more preoccupied in the Fire, yet they were not too preoccupied to say, ‘Pour upon us some water or some of what Allah has provided you.’” Then Hisham fell silent and did not reply with any word. [Quran 7:50; M. H. Shakir: And the inmates of the fire shall call out to the dwellers of the garden: Pour upon us some water or of that which Allah has given you. They shall say: Surely Allah has forbidden them both to the unbelievers]

99-/5797: From Zurara, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about Allah’s saying: “On the day when the earth shall be changed into a different earth.” He said: “It will be changed into a pure loaf of bread from which people will eat until the reckoning is finished. Allah said: ‘And We did not make them bodies not eating food’.” [Quran 14:48; Quran 21:8; M. H. Shakir: And We did not make them bodies not eating food, and they were not to abide (forever)]

99-/5798: From Muhammad, from Muhammad b. Hashim, from one who informed him, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: Al-Abrash al-Kalbi said to him: “It has reached me that you said—regarding Allah’s word: ‘On the day when the earth shall be changed into a different earth’—that it will be changed into a loaf of bread?” Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “They have spoken truly: the earth will be changed into a pure loaf of bread at the Standing, and they will eat from it.” Al-Abrash laughed and said: “Do they not have something to preoccupy them, given what they are in, from eating bread?” He said: “Woe to you! In which of the two states are they more preoccupied and worse off: when they are at the Standing, or when they are in the Fire being punished?” He said: “No—when they are in the Fire.” He said: “Woe to you! And indeed Allah says: ‘Most surely they shall eat of a tree of Zaqqūm, then shall they fill their bellies with it. Then besides it, they shall drink of boiling water; then drink as drinks the thirsty camel’.” [Quran 14:48; Quran 56:52-55; M. H. Shakir translation applied for 56:52-55]

99-/5799: And in another report from him (peace be upon him), he said: “And while they are in the Fire, they are not preoccupied from eating dari‘ and drinking boiling water even amid the punishment; so how would they be preoccupied from it at the Reckoning?” [cf. Quran 88:6-7; 14:16]

This is a sufficient exposition for the people and that they may be warned thereby, and that they may know that He is one God, and that those possessed of understanding may mind.
